  1. n/m Decided to wait just a bit longer to ask my question! :D
  2. I have a couple all-white Corning Ware baking dishes and love them! They’re the first ones I reach for, actually - and I have some Le Creuset. I think I like the all-white. https://m.bedbathandbeyond.com/m/product/corningware-reg-french-white-reg-iii-baking-dishes/207609?categoryId=12597
  3. I loved it wholeheartedly and unabashedly. I do not care if there were plot holes anywhere - the entire movie was too awe-inspiring for me to even try to care. Gorgeous movie, inspiring movie, well-done movie! (I'll attribute some of the plot-holes that I'm ignoring to the fact that it's based on a comic book series. Plot holes abound in comics, a blind eye must sometimes be turned. :D ) So many book/comics-turned-movies get screwed up by Hollywood. The Last Airbender, for example. They shamelessly whitewashed the cast, mispronounced names (!!!), ignored how certain things in that "world" would actually happen.... and it was a mess. Or Eragon, the dragon book. Just remembering the film gives me the shivers, and not in a good way (not that the film was particularly horrible in and of itself... but if you'd read the books first... it was horrifying!) So, to see the characters literally LEAP INTO LIFE... I'm giddy and hopeful for the future of books/comics being turned into movies and tv series. Lupita Nyong'o needs to be in all the movies. I think I'd watch anything with her in acting it - she is a joy to watch. And Michael B. Jordan? HOW does that kid not have an Oscar yet? He is amazing in every single thing he's in - such a thoughtful actor. Give that boy a trophy!!!
  4. Agreeing with Julie. My oldest dd took DO Calc I and could have done it in a semester if she'd been motivated to do so.
  5. popping back in to add: Forgot micro and macroeconomics! They're CLEP'ing those too! . In hindsight, it looks like we are CLEPing those subjects that *I* can teach or that the kids can self-study for easily. Self-studying for math and science are tougher (for us, at least). And English... I want that spread out across the whole year so the kids stay accustomed to having to read (things they didn't choose for themselves) and write frequently. I can't see how having CLEP scores on an application or transcript could hurt. Maybe a particular university won't be "impressed," - but honestly, those universities are looking for the "x-factor" and not just test scores, etc anyway. They receive way too many uber high-achieving applicants for a CLEP score to downgrade a student if that student has an otherwise impressive/distinctive resume or application. CLEPs are just more convenient. Homeschoolers are off the beaten path anyway. If my kid were applying to a highly selective university, I would probably mention in my school report that CLEP tests were frequently preferred over APs because we were better able to fit them into our yearly schedule and scatter the tests throughout the year as opposed to having 6-7 AP classes to prepare for all in May (that would be insane ... for us...). s.
  6. My kids are doing CLEP for US History (both tests) and Government. This decision was made because we can pack the CLEP test-prep into 6-8 week intensives and take the test at their convenience. So, they are working toward taking a couple CLEP tests this summer for the two history courses, and taking the Government almost immediately following. This frees up the rest of their "School Year" (we school year-round, taking breaks as needed) for AP subjects. They're taking AP sciences, math, and English courses and will take the AP classes for those - spending the entire year in classes preparing. Their friends have told them that the AP History classes are really time-consuming, which didn't make them particularly excited to study for the AP test. They'll also take the CLEP for College Algebra, Sociology (iirc), and possibly for foreign language as well. Some of the schools they are looking at accept CLEP credits with no problem. Others are on a case-by-case basis (depending upon the enrolling student's preferred major). And still others don't accept CLEP at all. We are fine with that. If they HAVE to take History or Government again... it'll be easy credits. They're also taking SATIIs for Math, Science, and English.
  7. Loved the book and can’t wait for the movie!!!
  8. Mr. G (French and German classes) is the best online teacher my kids have ever had. I *think* he's still teaching at CurrClick. I hope he lands somewhere where his classes can grow exponentially - he is a fantastic teacher.
  9. I just want to give an enormous hug and thank you to everyone who posts here. This board was such an enormous help two years ago when DD1 was applying to schools. DD2 is a junior and we are starting to narrow down a list of schools, put together a timeline, create checklists, etc... and it is SUCH a relief to me to know that I can come here and ask (often somewhat stupid) questions and have such helpful input and replies. You guys have saved me time, sanity, and money. This board helps de-mystify this confusing process and everyone here is so darn kind and thoughtful in their replies - no snark, no insults - just kindness, honesty, ingenuity, encouragement, and thousands of hours of cumulative hive-mind expertise. I'm equally excited to offer my own (meager) resources and assistance when I am see an opportunity to do so. It's a true blessing - giving or receiving. Thank you all! :001_tt1:
  10. Very good information! Thank you all! The music department for her program is one of the very best, but I've heard about that hefty price tag for years - so hadn't looked into it thorougly (since I'd mistakenly thought it was looped in with the UCs requirements... :001_rolleyes: ). She'll have the SATIIs they require, so looks like she can keep it on her list of considerations for the time being! Good to know about the location situation. Older DD had Temple on her list, so we researched that scenario quite a bit, good to know this is similar. Thanks!
  11. I have nothing constructive to add, except to say that these stories are breaking my heart. What a horrible situation. I'm so sorry. :(
  12. Definitely the frozen pond!! It will coordinate beautifully with the hot chocolate brown color. Grey in one room and browns in another... not a fan. Yellow always seems to be a color people feel very strongly about, so I would avoid it for a b&b.
  13. Excellent - thank you! For some reason, I'd thought it was a California-state-law sort of requirement vs just a public U requirement. Very helpful! Thanks!! (wildly laughing at the cost! :smilielol5: It might be a necessary evil for her to apply (not actually attend) there, however)
  14. Ah, but now you won't ever have to wonder "What if?!" :)
  15. We have crossed USC off dds list because in my mind, it has the same homeschooler requirements as the UCs. Am I mistaken in this thinking? DD will be a senior next year, so it's too late for her to start chasing requirements if so. (she would be applying to the music school) I've briefly researched, but thought I would ask here first since I know there are people who are familiar with the California universities and might know firsthand. :)
  16. I'm so glad I opened this thread. I'd somehow forgotten that Math II is the one for after pre-calc. I was just about to order prep books for my kids and was thinking they'd be taking the Math I exam. Phew! Y'all saved me! :) Off to put the Math II books in my amazon cart... :D
  17. Thanks! We were hoping to not to have to open the message itself (since messenger lets the sender see that the message has been read - and ignored). Hmmm. I don’t see a way to do that w/o opening the message. Maybe I’ll try on all our different apps and computers (iPhone, Android, etc) - they all seem to be somewhat different. Maybe one will allow that option!
  18. There is a kid (16?-18?) who sends dd (17) questions via facebook messenger that make her uncomfortable. He lives a couple of hours away... she isn't "afraid" of him... he just asks her... weird... questions any time she posts a picture. So - she wants to not have his fb messenger messages pop up on her phone when he sends them. But we're not sure how to do that. She doesn't want to block him on facebook or unfriend him, where he'll realize it (we have firsthand experience of that going poorly)... but if she does block/acquaintance/whatever it is called him - will that make it so that his messages go to the "other" folder instead of straight to her? Blocking his messages are the important bit (hopefully in a way where he'll think she just never reads her messenger messages vs. that she's blocked him...) They do share some friends/acquaintances, but she will not likely casually "run into him" anywhere for a face-to-face about unread messages and he doesn't have her phone # (and hopefully her friends never share that info).
  19. Derek Owens AP Calculus AB https://www.derekowens.com/course_info_calculus.php Blue Tent AP English Lang & English Lit https://www.bluetentonline.com/ WTMA US History (says it will prepare students for the AP exam, but I don't think it's officially listed as an "AP" class) http://www.wtmacademy.com/courses/classes/advanced-us-history/
  20. This. If there's an Ivy with a program of study he's interested in... why not? (we are in the financial category where attending an Ivy would be loads cheaper than attending a state school... I've already got my third kid checking into those high-profile schools simply because of the financial aid he would receive!)
  21. I see that the AP Statistics was new for 2017 - curious if anyone is/has taken that class through edhesive?
  22. How much was the PAH Chem last year? We're planning to take it this year, and I *thought* it had gone up, but couldn't remember just how much! I think the first year it was just Beginner's Music Theory. Then they offered both beginner's and advanced. I have a kid in the advanced class and we like it very much.
  23. IME, the teens who want to send/receive nude pics will do so. Snapchat or not. Unfortunately. My kids have had it drilled into their heads what a never-ending nightmare kind of idea it would be to send or to receive such pictures. My girls keep their Snapchat lists to only people who they actually know and they've had no problems with people sending unwanted photos (my girls also have a one-strike and you're out policy. If a guy gets weird... they stop opening his texts or snapchats and will tell him such to his face. That directness might help, lol) We like snapchat because it has crazy filters to use, fun stickers to add to the pictures, it's easy to add captions to the pictures, and you can usually find a filter that gives your location (if you've approved for the "location" thing to work on Snapchat... you don't have to use that feature). Texting and sending pictures is a multi-step action and if you want to adjust/filter/add anything to the picture, we have to open it up in another app, etc. With Snapchat, we can send several little "here's what I'm in the middle of doing right now" pictures between the family and it's super easy. I only SC with my dh and my kids. My kids SC their friends, but again, they keep their lists small. Some of their friends Snapchat a gazillion people - including people they don't even really know. Those friends have had more issues with inappropriate SCs. What I don't like about Snapchat: The Stupid Streaks. OMg. :001_rolleyes: Their new update. Yuck. And their "scoring" system and "best friends" rating systems, etc. I can see how it can be used to bully teenagers.
  24. I ♥ ebags. We have 3 of the mother lode weekender backpacks (without wheels) and lots of packing cubes. It's changed the way we pack for big trips - simplified things dramatically!
  25. The best things ever (imo-as far as packing goes!) https://www.ebags.com/product/ebags/packing-cubes-3pc-set/13032?productid=10150075
