When do I start? Advice and feedback on curriculum choices

Don't feel pressured at all. Just follow his lead. My first (a girl) was asking to learn to read at 3. But my boy isn't as interested. He just started asking to draw letters so I got him a dry erase tracing book. He'll count so we work on that in a fun way. Same with letter sounds. I honestly just use Leap frog Letter Factory for it. For my daughter we did AAR Pre-Reading and switched to the Ordinary Parents Guide to Teaching Reading. For handwriting we did dry erase and HWOT. For math we have a giant set of counting bears and activity cards, cuisinaire rods, hundreds blocks, geoboards, and pattern blocks. We did the videos in educationunboxed with her. -
I agree with the others that I would make sure what he would be missing for the last half. Our schools allow this as well and it seems that they do the lesser subjects then (history, reading groups (not lessons but reading practice), and extras Iike art). We won't be doing it because dd is going to a Spanish immersion school and doesn't have that option. But if we did, I would do anything elective like art, museum trips, fun science experiments, and then work on any weak areas and strong areas. Dd was reading in preschool which is why we opted out of full day. I wanted to continue working on it with her at home.

Do your kids do "scripted" play...

Mine do it sometimes. Usually when my 5 year old is trying to control how her 3 year old brother plays. So she does it in a more controlling way of saying "now you be the troll and yell and chase me and say....." He is starting to do it back some as well. But when she is playing alone with dolls or with her friends, they don't do it as much. Both of my kids don't live in this world. They are constantly playing something imaginary and turning their hands and random objects into characters in their plots. It is crazy to watch. -
This is how my K was and it was in the mid 90s. I do remember learning to tie my shoes in PreK. The teacher told me to wait a minute and I got impatient and did it myself. I was also reading in PreK too. But I loved K. It seemed magical to me. But it was only half day and play based. We may have done phonics? My main memories of kindergarten were taking home the class teddybear for a week and playing with counting manipulative.

The assessments on the phonics page website are really helpful. I found that they do a good job of determining if phonics is needed further.

Our spelling is below her reading level. I think that is actually better. While they may be able to read special sounds, they may not be able to spell them. Our phonics program went to a 4th grade level, but our spelling is a first grade program. It's been working well for us. We did phonics until she could decode at a 4th grade level. I would continue on with phonics to solidify the grasp he has on them

My 5 year old is doing a first grade Language Arts program. We're also using The Good and The Beautiful. My daughter loves it and begs to do her lessons. It covers spelling, dictations, art appreciation, and grammar. It also has phonics which we've used as review. I've really enjoyed it so far.

We're also using Long Story Short. It's the Old Testament version of Old Story New. We're doing it with our 3 and 5 year old. Mainly the 5 year old. It has been going well and I love his resources. -

I would definitely go with Art supplies and science equipment. Get as many science-themed manipulative as you can. They are so useful. I would get high quality nonfiction and fiction books. Instruments? My DD learned to read in preschool so we've bought a lot of books on her level and a little above. Imaginary play items? Could those count? -
We also did HWOT with it as well. And Bob books and other readers. Dd now writes the phonograms for me as Spelling practice.

If you have LOE I would use it. I feel like that is an expensive program to not utilize. I haven't used it but it does look fun and comprehensive. I do know that some don't encourage doing handwriting and reading simultaneously. My DDs reading skills are far above her writing (which is above grade level too). We just finished OPGTR with my 5 year old. She really enjoyed it and I found it effective. She can read well for her age and loves to read. It is an excellent program and I plan to use it again with my son.

I haven't even come across tie in my daughters size. She's barely a 10. The majority of shoes her size are Velcro. I have to teach her to tie on my shoes 😂

We just started using Level 1 for language arts. So far my daughter loves it. I do alter their spelling. Level 1s seems weird In that there's a spelling list in the front of the coursebook. The list is random and follows no pattern. So we are doing phonogram based spelling on our own. -
I would avoid that school like the plague. It sounds like they have unrealistic expectations for kids her age.

I would teach a phonics based spelling program. That way he'll get the phonics rules but in a way that might interest him. We're using Don Potters Wise Owl Pollysyllables book in order to work through longer words with my daughter. -
OP I also meant to ask where you live. In certain affluent and highly intellectual areas, I see a greater push for earlier academic achievement. I have friends in NYC and D.C. who discuss how stressed they feel with the preschool testing and enrollment process. Preschoolers to go test prep centers to learn to read and learn school skills! It is crazy. But those areas may have an abnormally high percentage of kids reading in K.

I agree that you can get a phonics book and work on it at a slow pace. We Used Ordinary Parents Guide to teaching Reading and started around 4 with my daughter and worked at her pace

Also, I'm confused as to who the "they" is. Did you have her evaluated by the school system for some reason? The actual K teachers may be less pushy of high academic standards

She isn't behind though. Even knowing her letter sounds makes her somewhat ahead. I think it would help you if you googled what is developmentally appropriate for a preschooler. You can find examples of what kind of people preschoolers should draw and what they should know as far as reading. Readiness. She is not behind. At all. The school has unreastic and developmentally innapropirate expectations for preschoolers.

This. The vast majority of kids do not read before starting K. I couldn't find the article I was looking for but it's something like 5% of kids read before K. Maybe a little different. If you're teachers are pushing it I would just ignore them. Some kids stay in the knowing their letter sounds, but not blending them into words stage for a while. Blending (putting sounds into words) is a developmental skill and can't be forced. I would do something gentle if you wanted t do anything at all. We did use progressive phonics occasionally and my kids LOVE Leap Frog Letter Factory.
