  1. And I agree about reading. We visit the library most days. Her bus stop is next to the library. She reads A LOT. And usually has a few books going at once. She's devouring chapter books now which is crazy to watch.
  2. Thanks. We LOVE Teach Your Monster to Read. We've used it for a while and it still holds their interest. It's been great for review. I'm guessing it won't be worth the money for reading eggs. I'd like something that teaches concepts and she's gotten frustrated with Prodigy since it doesn't teach concepts. We also limit screens and barely allow them during the school week. But I'd make exception for a learning thing occasionally. I may just find a workbook. She loves those.
  3. Is it worth it to use for supplementing? DD does a Spanish immersion school for K. She's reading at about a 3/4th grade level and reads voraciously. Her spelling seems decent for her age. At school they do Singapore math in Spanish so DD is working on counting all over again and starting from the beginning since it's a new language. We did the trial of marhseeds and reading eggs and both kids (3.5 and 5.5) enjoyed it. Trying to decide if it's worth the $$. I don't want to formally afterschool right now. She reads to me, we read a lot as a family, and she'll sometimes do workbooks for fun. She has no homework for school. The school uses RazKids A-Z but it's only the guided reading books and one of the games.
  4. A question about multi syllable level programs. I bought Wise Owl Polysyllables from Don Potter but didn't know what level it goes to. My daughter did OPGTR and we've been doing Wise Owl as a follow up.
  5. DD has discovered the horrible Rainbow Magic Fairy books. She reads them rather quickly and I try and balance them with higher quality books. She's also reading: Zoey and Sassafras Monsters and Mold Ivy & Bean The Storm Dragon (Secret Rescuers series) Our audiobook is Clementine Read aloud: Cilla-Lee Jenkins Author Extraordinaire She's also started reading in Spanish for school. Right now it is just simple guided reading books but her Spanish reading ability is way higher than her comprehension and understanding level.
  6. This was me as well. I'd go from sweet valley high to Charles Dickens in a matter of days. My DD and I talked about sugar books and vegetable books. I told her we need to have a balance. We just left the library and she got 5 Rainbow Magic fairy books. She'll finish them in a couple of days. But she also has some books I chose for her. Using the sugar and veggies illustration seems to have helped her understand book quality better. But I still let her read what she wants as long as there's a balance.
  7. Did you start OPGTR at different ages for all of your kiddos? I'm hoping to use it for both of my kiddos. My daughter started it at 3.5 and finished at 5. My son is 3.75 and we haven't started. We usually start after letter sounds are known.
  8. Yes there's a ton on YouTube. I think we'll just have to stick with that. I've tried searching iTunes using those terms and get mixed results. I think I may need to just buy hard cds to get what I'm looking for. We got whistlefritz from the library this weekend. It's great.
  9. DD starts Spanish immersion K next week. I'm looking for some songs suggestions (preferably iTunes or amazon music) for learning K concepts Counting to 50 or 100 ABCs Days of the week Months Etc. I know that English versions of these exist but I've tried googling "contanda a cien" or similar in iTunes with no luck.
  10. We aren't homeschooling or I wouldn't even bother with high frequency words. She's going to an immersion K school and they send the high frequency words home to be learned
  11. We had a science notebook for observation. DD did have the primary notebook with half line half drawing space. She'd draw a picture and then write a sentence. But she was ready for it
  12. Oh yes, I know. We are pretty strongly opposed to sight words. We didn't do sight words with English reading for those reasons.
  13. That was what I had been thinking. I'm not sure. Perhaps for the same reason that they teach purely phonetic English words as sight words? Quicker fluency?
  14. We had a meet and greet at DDs kindergarten today. One other mother mentioned that in K their only homework is learning sight words. Words such as con, el, the colors, etc. DD is reading in English and could read simple Spanish words (one fish two fish in Spanish and words such as azul and luna) but doesn't know what the words mean. I'd love to do the sight words with her phonetically rather than straight memorize. I know Spanish somewhat (did AP Spanish) but it's been a while since I've done Spanish phonics. Is there a resource that would be good to have? I was looking at Coquitas reading book.
  15. I agree with this 100% My 3.5 year old can rhyme well with real and nonsense words. He's not reading early I did have one who rhymed early and was an early reader. But I find that some kids can blend before rhyming. I would want to make sure OPs kiddo met the other phonological awareness skills.
  16. What exactly do I need to do Spalding? In terms of supplies. Also, do you think it would be too much to do for afterschooling? She's going to a Spanish immersion school, but there's no homework in K. There is the adjustment to Spanish which can be difficult. Some families do no English teaching at home, but since DD is reading (3rd grade level) and writing and trying to spell, I don't want to let her develop poor spelling skills. She is a decent speller, so I don't think spalding would be too hard. I just don't want to overwhelm her. We'd do it twice a week. I work 3 evenings a week so 2x is all we can do unles we did a Saturday.
  17. We've been using Don Potters Wise Owl Pollysyllable. It goes through how to break down larger multisyllable words
  18. We're planning on doing the following Read aloud/audiobook: The rest of the Little House books (were on number 5) The Moffats Stuart Little TumTum and Nutmeg book 2 The Rise and Fall of Mount Majestic Paddington Mr. poppers penguins DD Reading to self: Zoey and Sassafras (3rd and 4th book) Welcome to Bed and Biscuit Lulu and the Duck Dory Fantasmagory The Lighthouse Family
  19. I do like that with spalding I can go at her pace without spending more money. And hit the handwriting as well. I'm feeling pulled towards it again.
  20. Our library does have it but no available copies. I may try and find a cheap uses copy. I'm not sure if she's like the letter tiles.
  21. By teacher intensive, I meant the non-scripted or planned lessons. I know both require you to sit and teach the lesson, but for me the fact that aas has planned lessons is a hue benefit.
  22. Have you done AAS? I'm trying to decide if I start with level 1 or 2. DD can spell cvc words and words such as have, chip, bath, etc. a friend was saying that level 1 does cvc words and simple digraphs such as th
  23. From my understanding, AAS has lessons designed for you all ready to go, whereas Spalding isn't as straightforward lesson wise. That's what I meant by teacher Intensive. I don't want to have to lesson plan that much.
  24. I plan to do AAS. I had been considering spalding but cannot do something as teacher intensive. I plan to buy the first two levels of aas and see how it goes
  25. I've been on the fence about spelling for a while. We will do afterschooling for spelling. DD is reading fluently at a 3rd grade level. We did OPGTR for phonics and I don't really desire to use it for spelling. I'm torn between aas and something all in one like Spaulding. She writes decently. Her Kindergarten will work on cursive though. Her spacing and sizing is off a bit, but pretty normal for a 5.5yo. Her spelling is decent. She can spell cvc words and words such as chip, love, kite, etc. so simple digraphs and silent e words. So pros and cons of aas vs spalding? I know aas is more expensive than spalding, but I worry that spalding is too teacher intensive. We plan to do spelling 2-3 days a week max.
