  1. Breaking the Barrier Spanish..... so far a miss. Butbto be fair, we have had a very difficult last couple of months, a tragedy that I’ve posted about before, and a gymnastics injury DD hasn’t been able to walk in almost four weeks... it turned out to be a bruised bone and sprained acl.... so she will walk. But anyway, the curriculum might be fine in different circumstances. I’m thinking of switching to Easy Peasy Spanish. Hillsdale College changed their free class structure.... dropping all actual lessons and quizzes... that messed up our year as well. Then, due to complaints, the college put everything back in place. Right after we revamped our plans. So thatvhas been a bit wonky too. Essentials in Literature 10 has been a great fit. ByLine has worked well... DS enjoys it Though DD was supposed to use it as well. She did not like it at all. MCT WWTW2, Poetry and Humanity, re reading Magic Lens 1.... has all worked for DD. AOPS and TT Geometry are perfect.... one for each kid Lol Apoogia Chemistry has been a big hit too. A bit too slow and easy for DD, but DS finds it challenging.
  2. Thank you again. You all are wonderful . The funeral was this past weekend. ? as we try to move forward, we are on a “do what school you think you can handle” schedule.
  3. Thank you, everyone. I truly appreciate it. I do keep reading and reading your posts. It really helps. ?
  4. Momto3boyz.... Thank you. I am so sorry for your loss. I cannot imagine. ?
  5. Pen..... yes. That’s the one. DawnM ..... they actually brought in grief specialists. Not school counselors. But yes I agree. Schoolwise, they are doing what they feel like. Thank you, all.
  6. Yes, our church has started grief support. It will be ongoing. The grief counselor has offered extra for those in need. The public school grief counselors are available to us Homeschoolers .... our church youth minister asked. I don’t think I want to go that route though. No reason to go into the school. I think talking to our priest has helped the most so far. Thank you!
  7. Thank you. Today, We did a little school. The kids picked what they wanted to do. Followed by art and music. We will take it day by day.
  8. Thank you all. Im so sorry for the losses you all have mentioned. Our church started grief counseling yesterday. Our whole family went. It was... peaceful. This morning, the kids are about to get up... and we will see what, if any, school will happen... thank you
  9. Thank you all... yes, it was on the news. I’ll surely be re-reading your suggestions and thoughts as the days go on. DS is a musician, and seems to be delving into his music .... he would probably like to do that all day
  10. My family is ok. But my dearest friend was murdered. By her son. Who is my son’s friend. DS, tenth grade..... processing ..... this awful for him. For all of us. DD is 8th grade. We school traditionally. With a co-op....Chemistry. How do I approach school? Do we take a break? Do we wake up Monday morning and trudge on as if nothing has happened.... to keep normalcy? Both kids are very bright, college bound. I need guidance. I’m in shock. Thank you
  11. Thanks again, Lori D. This is why I asked here. For good solid academic advice!
  12. Thank you both! Yes, it is the Farris course. As it is a possibility for co-op next year, I started looking into it. And I actually do agree with what both of you said.... it seems like a half credit.... of Constitution , not government. But when the author says it’s worth one credit, and people call it government ..... well, I was left confused. Thank you! ?
  13. My DS , 16, is also very slow at his work. I know he has very slow processing speed from IQ testing when he was young. Coupled with a very high IQ.... so he is capable of the work. But it takes him forever. I don’t want him doing school all day long. But I want him to have a solid honors level education (except in math.... happy with teaching textbooks there for him). So, I don’t want to cut back on his work.... but I feel like we have to. Sigh.
  14. Looking ahead for next year..... The author says it is worth one credit. However, Online reviews seem to waver between 1/2 and 1 credit. We only need 1/2 credit in government. Of course, I would like to make that an honors half credit. Thoughts?
  15. No, she doesn’t have to have a sport each year. DD is a competitive gymnast. She goes 20 hours a week. 8th grade technically. But well advanced. We considered doing CC... she wants to be a surgeon, currently..... is highly academic and gifted. Maybe not so much as your DD, so the point might be moot. But for my DD, she loves gymnastics. She doesn’t want to give it up, or go less. Traditional homeschooling using advanced materials and classes lets her do what she loves. All that to say, if she loves cheer.... I would make it a priority. She is only a child once. She could switch to non-competitive though. Or cheer for a local school team. If she only likes it and it is not that important to her. Then that’s different. I would let it go, just let her tumble once a week in rec or something.... and go and research her snakes. HTH
  16. We just started using it this year too. After BTB 3 kids can go into Spanish 4 or AP.... so by that logic, it would work to use BTB as years 1-4. As for us, it moves quickly. But we have a conversational Spanish class that is two hours a week that uses Spanish is Fun 1 as the textbook, and assigns project based homework.... family tree, newspaper, etc. So, I don’t see us finishing BtB 1 in a year.
  17. Thank you for your response. And your link.... I actually do remember that post.... I’ll have to go look at AAW. DD is in the middle of WWTW2, finised Magic Lens 1and the practice book , and is ready for the Poetry book. My edition is from 2015... maybe it is slightly improved. When I quickly glanced through it, I thought we could work with it since Dd is a natural writer. Can you recommend something for academic writing and learning how to incorporate quotes properly? This isn’t new to her.... she just hasn’t developed comfort with it yet... and I want her to learn properly. Which ByLine would have done..... but like I said.... she rebeled. Thank, you so much.
  18. I know this isn’t what you are looking for, but you got me thinking..... When we did Astronomy, my son watched a couple of different series on the SCI channel (I think). I can’t remember what they were called, but they are on all the time... about the comets, planets, stars., etc....... I’ll post when I remember.... anyway, he learned way more form those series than Elemntal science, or any books we had. Maybe, your DD would like to watch the episodes, and create her own fun Ellen McHenry (who we love too) type of activities / curriculum?
  19. So DD was going to do ByLine with older brother. We started it yesterday. She hated it. He loved it. She begged to go back to MCT. So we will.... but we are up to AAW1. I own it. Anyone use it and actually like it?
  20. Wow, thank you for such a well thought out response. When they tour the courthouse or hospital of any such place, it is quite often followed with a quiz at their weekly meeting. The tours are long and information packed. Community service... example was parking cars at a Fourth of July celebration. Sometimes they simply provide a presence, in ful uniform. They do sell hot dogs at events as a fundraiser once a month, but they did this for free at an end of school event. Thank you so much!
  21. DS is a Police Explorer. He completed the 100 hours of Phase 1 of Police Explorer Academy (intense 2-week Academy training that includes Physical training, drills, marching, classes, all of which are graded and include a final exam) this summer.... Phases 2 and 3 will be the next two summers. He has also read and discussed a Crime scene investigation text book with me, field trips to the courthouse, hospital, gun range, done physical training this summer, in additional to weekly meetings, and community service activities. I was thinking that I could use the 100 Academy hours, field trips, and book and easily call it a credit. But should I? If so, what should I call it? Thank you in advance.
