Spanish 2 EP and conversational class
World history : A Catholic text book with workbook
PE : she practices 20 hours a week in competitive gymnastics.
English. Probably homegrown.   Maybe a Co-op literature class.
MatH:  AOPS, should be finishing geometry and counting and probability, and move on to Intermediate Algebra.

So... things have changed.  DD plans to dual enroll either for the spring or summer semester.  So the goal is to get her ready for that..

My 9th grader is doing EP Spanish 1 with the convo class this year. Did you take this last year? Did you find the class to be beneficial?

    Thanks!

Sorry, I just saw this.  We did EP Spanish 1 this past year. But did not use the Conversational class.  We actually first started with Breaking the Barrier... and gave up on it.  However, we have had a local in person conversational class two hours a week.  I do not plan to use the EP conversational class for Spanish 2.... mostly because it doesn’t fit in with her 20 hours a week gymnastics schedule.

  3. We haven’t used OyAN so I cannot compare it.  But we are finishing up ByLine. My kid works slowly, so he probably couldn’t finish it in one semester.  But, he is also doing other things for his English credit.... literature and grammar.   So, maybe without those additions, he could.  ByLine has some assignments that take longer than others... so as long as you give the extra time needed for those, you probably could.  We skipped a few of the short writing assignments.... because I added different longer assignments.  I don’t think there is any fluff in byLine... it is solid.  It is designed to spend 4-5 hours a week..  Maybe if you start it early in the summer?  I hope that made sense... my kids won’t stop talking to me while I’m typing. 😂

DS will be 11th next year. It sounds crazy....  so far the plan is

    Teaching textbooks Precalculus

Government.... 1/2 credit. probably use some Hillsdale College classes.   I have Notgrass Government book too

Economics ... 1/2 credit. Hillsdale College class.  And I have borrowed a high school level book in case the College class is too hard.

English. ... either an actual program.  Or write for government and economics, as well as literature we select.  SAT prep. Possibly Easy Grammar 11 since Grammar is a weakness.  Hoping for a co-op literature class.

    science.... Apologia Physics

Spanish 2.   Just switched to Easy Peasy for Spanish 1, so will continue with it if it goes well.  Plus, a 2-hour once a week conversational class.

    music..... his passion

some other elective.   Maybe criminal justice or forensics.  Or more history.  Personal finance.

So, this has completely changed!  DS has decided to Dual Enroll.

    so for summer and fall....

Managing your success (required 3.0 credit class)

    Composition 1

    Spanish 1

    American Federal Government

When he registers for the Spring, it will probably be Spanish 2, Composition 2, a math class, and economics or science.

Question: since he won’t have math until the spring, should we continue with our math program at home until then? Or focus on SAT math (and English) prep?  Thank you!

  5. So, in my notes, I have listed course titles that somewhere... maybe this forum, but I really have no idea where.... Richard Rusczyk recommends.  This is just from my notes...

Algebra 1, Intro to Algebra book chapters 1-11

algebra 2, Intro to Algebra book chapters 12-22

algebra 3, or Advanced Algebra with Precalculus,  Intermediate Algebra book

Precalculus, or Precalculus with Introductory Linear Algebra, Precalculus book

I used EIW for 5th and 7th grades, and it's back to my top pick for my 9th grader, but I was going to use the 10th grade book.   I've been looking, but so far it's the best one I can find!  I was not planning to use the grading service, but my DD is a good writer.

Byline is my second choice 😉  I would love to hear a review of it b'c it's so new!

My son loves ByLine.  He thinks the teacher is really funny. He likes all the readings and assignments.  However, his writing has improved so very much this past year, that he doesn’t need the incremental steps (not as incremental as EIW ).  So he watches the three videos at the beginning of the week.  Then does the assignments.  It will take us the whole year because we are pairing it with Essentials in literature 10.  ByLine is a lot of work.  Or maybe it seems that way because my kid is a very s l o w worker.

That being said, we stopped using the extra journal.  We did use the extra journal when we did Cover story.   And my 8th grade DD was supposed to do ByLine with him. The first week I knew it was a bad fit.  She didn’t appreciate the corny humor.  Or the premise of using history for chronojournalism.  She does not like history. Making her do ByLine would have been torturous in her mind.  Instead, she is researching and writing, more of a writing across the curriculum approach.  Her current essay is about the benefits of GMOs.  That’s my science kid.

  7. We used EIW 9 with grading service.  The grading service was exactly what my son needed .... an outside grader to be accountable to who gave good feedback. It was worth the price.  The only really complaint was that you have to pick from the lesson prompts for the grading service.  We like to use our own prompts.  We did not continue EIW for 10th grade because my son wanted to do ByLine... he is a history buff.

  8. DS 10th grade (music, history or criminal justice are possible college majors)  is struggling through Apolgia chemistry.  We have an amazing co-op teacher and his sister also explains it to him. He has done TT Algebra 2 and is at the end of TT geometry.  The math isn’t too awful... but the concepts and figuring out what to do is extremely challenging.

So, do we struggle through apologia Physics next year?  An easier physics? DD will be using apologia and I don’t like the idea of buying two curriculums, though we do that for math already.

Or skip physics... let him do earth science, or forensics or something? Thanks !

I'd love to hear what you think of the grading service.  We are looking at adding it on next year.

I really liked it.  I definitely recommend it.  My son seemed to take it more seriously because it was for an outside teacher.  Which was what I wanted.  And the grades, as well as the actual corrections and remarks were spot on.  His writing definitely improved. We only didn’t continue with it for 10th grade because my son wanted to do ByLine.

I have found that what is covered in a Spanish 1 class varies so much. My dd did Spanish 1 at the high school and they only covered the present and present progressive tenses in the year. We then switched to BTB and it covers a lot. Spanish was one of the classes that I really wasn't sure how we had done, but my dd was easily able to test into level 3 college Spanish when she started there this year - probably could have even gone into level 4 as she could have retaken the placement test, and only just missed 80% the first time, but decided to start at 3. She did great, got an A in the class and back credit for the previous levels, and is doing a Spnish minor along with her degree. I think BTB is a great course.

Did your DD complete BtB levels 1-3?

  13. I have asked that in a few places. It seems that 9 chapters would do it. FWIW, we started BtB 1, and just switched to Easy Peasy Spanish 1 last week.  The concepts just came too quickly without enough review for us.  And that’s with a once a week conversational Spanish class using Spanish is Fun 1.  We have also had too many personal issues effect us the past few months, so probably have not devoted the necessary amout of time.
