  1. Good point, but it still took decades for most people to embrace seatbelts despite some pretty clear physics - object in motion and all that. Many early attempts (lapbelts) caused almost as much harm as good -not that they didn’t stop you from going through the windshield- and it multiple systems of design in all areas of an automobile that will allow you to survive being trapped in the speeding automobile driven by a drunk driver. Also, don’t forget the decades of trying to get people to understand drunk driving is bad, not just to yourself, but to others. Masks don’t have anywhere near the data as the seatbelt example. Both are/were contentious, both had “common sense” aspects to protecting yourself and others, but we are still in the middle of the mask bit and forgetting in our hindsight that the examples cited were fought tooth and nail early on as well.
  2. The thing is, in a small church especially, if you think you ever want to come back I personally wouldn’t say it was immoral. Phrased that way, bridges would likely be burned severely enough to not be rebuildable. I don’t feel comfortable right now would be a better approach.
  3. I don’t know what state this is in...in my state masks are required in all public indoor spaces with a fine attached, but masks are not required, only encouraged, during worship services.
  4. AAS really should be started in level 1, but older kids can move faster. Ideally each student should have their own set of cards as they will be progressing at different levels and have different words in mastered and review piles. I probably would buy a set for the third grader of level 1. I would only have one set of tiles, but if starting over I would probably just get the app. Physical tiles are a bit of a pain. AAR - probably pre reading for preschool unless showing reading readiness. First grader AAR 1 to start, but probably a placement test out there. I probably wouldn’t start AAS until at least done with AAR2. How well is the third grader reading? He might not need AAR. If you do both, he would have a box for reading cards and a box for spelling cards. If you can find it, the ziggy file folder games are fun for practicing at AAR1 level. I may still have my set. customer service is super helpful and they are a great resource for placement questions. I really loved AAR and wish it had been around for my older kids. I am currently using AAS 3 right now with my 4th child.
  5. I hate side by side. My mom recently bought one because it was a floor sample. It has a fair amount of freezer volume, but it hard to use it effectively. I also hate the small width compared to the depth in the refrigerator. Stuff seems to get lost in the back especially on the top shelf. I also hate having to crouch down to get the items on the bottom shelf. I really like the freezer on the bottom with the pull out drawer. I was so happy when freezer on the bottom came back into style.
  6. What do they mean by a physically existing curriculum?
  7. Yes I have ordered from them. I really like how you can modify the length. The quality seems nice.
  8. My children haven’t taken any CLEP yet, but I look at it similarly to AP tests. I think it is worthwhile to take the test if you have studied the material, but AP classes don’t factor the test into the grade because it comes after school is out for the year. I guess it could verify your grade, but the designation as the class as honors or not really shouldn’t be tied to passing the test. Same with grading...I don’t think it is really fair to the student to base a grade on a final that you as the teacher didn’t create. Even if you outsource a class you wouldn’t test your student on content you didn’t actually cover in class.
  9. Thanks! I guess it isn’t a super huge deal, but just seems like they are trying to grab any data they can. My daughter did say it was marked with a red asterisk as being required. I guess we will contact them to see what they say.
  10. My daughter is setting up her common app account and she says it is a required field to enter her siblings names not just how many she has. What possible reason could there be for needing the names of her siblings since they are not applying to college for some time?
  11. Yes I did buy the TM because the tests scheduled in the MP plans were in the front, but I purchased it used on eBay. I didn’t really use it that much, but I did use the solution manual a lot. If I had to pick one, I would certainly pick the solution manual over the teacher’s manual.
  12. I am still old school...I have to write it on paper.
  13. I would think a printout of that list on the wall by her desk would be sufficient. If she has room for the tub maybe use it to store any of those items she was planning on taking anyway like the the meds/feminine supplies/toothpaste and use the tub to store extra set of sheets or towels and general stuff. I personally doubt a hairdryer is on my grab bag if stuck in my room. I would not buy extra books. If someone can come do the laundry then someone should be able to bring a book.
  14. If your local cc doesn’t offer it, you might look at other community colleges besides your own. It might not be as cost effective, but cheaper than a university.
  15. Didn’t have it growing up because my mom doesn’t like cinnamon, but I knew about it and we have it now. I have bought it from time to time because the kids liked the domino’s shakers with animal pictures on the front, but now I have a jelly size canning jar that my husband punched holes in a canning lid for a shaker and have it closed with a canning ring. It is very easy to see how much we have and to refill it when necessary.
  16. Listening... I just use book rings for each unit and then stuff them in a quart size ziplock bag
  17. My parents put in wood floors when they built our house 50 years ago because my sister has allergies - there is ceramic tile in the bathrooms and some sort of tile squares in the basement, but hardwood everywhere else. Best decision ever! They are still going strong although they could use some wax and some restraining in the kitchen. We stripped the wax and restrained all the floors when we bought the house from my parents 15 years ago, but they never had polyurethane on them so we have never had to resand them. Every time I see how much dust and dirt there is under the beds or under the couch or under a rug in the family room after vacuuming I renew my commitment to never own carpet. A swifter duster over the whole house is much less work than those carpet cleaners!
  18. When I was looking at math textbooks to decide I checked some out through inter library loan. Foerster hasn’t changed except for one chapter on programming was replaced with a chapter on statistics. You can get a super old copy of that text on a number of sites for very little money.
  19. I think you can jump in at B even in second edition because when it first came out they said you could switch first to second edition through level B....if you had done B first edition you could go to C second edition and beyond that they start diverging. Level A is kindergarten and I don’t see a problem with jumping in at B since it isn’t his first exposure to math, you just might need to spend a bit more time on some of the first few lessons. I have liked the notes in the second edition levels I have used and despite being a long time first edition user I am switching my second grader to Second edition level D this fall. I love RS and I hope the OP loves RS. As always, be sure to play the games!
  20. It is a GE, but they don’t make them like they used to. It really should be retired, but I haven’t brought myself to do it. I would bet it isn’t all original as my father was known to work on anything that broke until it couldn’t be resurrected. Our fridge in the kitchen is a kitchenaide that is about 12 years old.
  21. One was cured bacon, the other uncured. The OJ was Tropicana so pasteurized. I don’t really know the temp it got to. My parents still had power so we went to their house last night. I was at the house this afternoon and the power wasn’t on and I didn’t want to mess with stuff, but when I came over at 6:30 to get church clothes for tomorrow (they changed our estimated time from 6pm tonight to 11:30pm tomorrow night) it was actually back on, possibly for two hours. The garage fridge is kept cold, but it is 50 years old and doesn’t have the best performance characteristics. So do you think unopened shredded cheese would be ok to put into lasagne tomorrow since it would be baked?
  22. Our power went out on Friday afternoon at 1:00pm after a rain/windstorm. It was off for about 30 hours. Some of the stuff in the freezer I was able to save but I have a couple of questions on fridge items. I know butter is fine & milk, cream, cream cheese are going but what about eggs, buttermilk, and orange juice? I assume bacon needs to go as well. Any wisdom? Not surprised by the outage, 2020 wouldn’t be have complete without one. A whole house generator is on my to do list for Monday....
  23. Part of the problem is that there have been many, many examples of photos and videos made to look like beaches are packed that they are untrustworthy at this point without access to see how they were taken.
  24. It hasn’t been too bad here tonight, not as many as normal. I did prefer it when it was illegal in Michigan to shoot off anything much larger than a sparkler at home.
  25. I would agree with this. I knew very little about it when I saw it initially in London last year except for a 60 Minutes interview of Miranda. I am partway through the book Hamilton and what I find so amazing is that Miranda could read that book and say to himself, you know I think I could make a Broadway musical out of this guy’s life. To think that and then to be able to get the right meter and rhyme Hamilton’s life story is artistic genius. The music isn’t my typical genre, but the creation of the show is brilliant. Yes, the music is original, but I also think one thing that doesn’t come across on the movie form is just how unrelenting a performance it must be for the cast. I am an engineer and not a musical theater type or a dancer, but unlike most musicals there are no actual set changes. The movement of the props are all worked into the choreography, the movement is constant, and those with smaller parts are someone different in the second act. Like the careful word choices in the lyrics there is nothing extraneous in the set or how the cast moves around. There is a 20 or 30 minute documentary on Amazon Prime that goes into the musical roots of Miranda’s work and Hamilton in particular. I don’t remember the name of it, but it was interesting.
