  1. I am borrowing Sonlight D and E from a friend who is building a new house and needed somewhere to store stuff.  We completed most of Core D last year and moved into Core E this fall.  The problem is her instructor guides are two different ages.  Core D used the newer 2 volume Landmark History along with the DK Children’s Encyclopedia of American History which my friend included both books.  The Core E guide references the older one volume edition, but she loaned me the second half of the two volume edition.  Any ideas on how to generally line the two up?  Thanks!

OP here!  If you could see ALL THE PAPER at my house right now!!!  I am dying from too much paper!!!!

I cleaned out my dad's house and am still going through all his old papers.  I haven't gotten to keep mine in order dealing with his stuff and now DH is starting to bring over some of his parents to go through.  😝

This is my winter quarantine project!!!

I do appreciate all the tips and ideas!  When I find it, I will let you know where it was -- LOL!

What ever happened to that promise of a paperless society with the advent of computers???  It never happened over here.

  3. Do you have a safe deposit box at a bank?  Mine are in a Manila folder (everyone has their own) with SS card, passport, notarized birth certificate.  Good luck!  I really hate it when I lose stuff.  My best advice, sit down and take a break and think about something else for a bit and it might come to you.  When I get in a frenzy, I don’t find things well.

I second Duck Feet. I've got a pair of their shoes I've worn for 3/4 of each year for 3 years now. They were comfortable from the get go but have broken is buttery soft. Just a quick swipe with leather conditioner at the beginning of the season before I start to wear them and they look brand new. You won't need lots of shoes because you will reach for these over and over again. I promise!

Do you know anyone who sells them in a store - I can only find their website.  I have a gut feeling that they will be too wide for my foot, but I really want to try a pair.  The colors are so cute!

  5. My daughter swims a lot and we get her suits from swim outlet or the shop right behind us.  She likes Dolfin for a one piece suit to swim in.  Most suits geared at teens are not generally what I am looking to put on my daughter.  I do like the Lands End suits from the catalogue, but never have tried them.  If swimming in a pool, I like the suits with Lycra instead of spandex...they last so much longer in the chlorine.

The price sends me into hysterics, but a friend has a pair from this brand that she wears all winter, every winter and loves. Similar look to Doc Martens but the low boots don't construct your ankle.

These look so cute!  I actually like the strap shoes in all the different colors, but do you know how they fit.  A wide toe box is good, but overall I have a narrow food.  I love my dansko’s, but can only wear a couple styles that come in narrows.  I don’t like that danskos are now made in China, but I do like that these are made in Poland.

That's the price point I'm used to.

I remember hearing something about why Catholic schools are so much cheaper... is it that the teachers need less money or are they subsidized or what?

I am sure the teachers are paid somewhat less in Catholic vs. public schools because our PS teachers are unionized.  I don’t think they are significantly less paid than than the independent private school teachers.  The people I have known who teach at them do so for the tuition discount, not the money.  Most Catholic schools are willing to run larger class sizes (thinking non-Covid days here) than public or the exclusive private schools.  When I taught religious education pre-children I counted 33 desks in the middle school classroom that I was using.  Generally. the parish will subsidize school operations in their budgets.

Yeah, I can't do math today, sigh. I somehow multiplied by 4 and then by 4 again to try to multiply by 40.

We all get a pass on foggy brain every now and then 😉

I have no idea exactly where this guy lives (friend of my brother’s) so I looked up the pk-8 parish right by our house.  For active members tuition is $6600 with 34% discount for 2nd, 41% discount for 3rd, 56%discount for 4th, 100% discount for 5th.

For reference, private, independent elementary schools here are about 25,000-30,000/child so Catholic education is a good value around here if that is what you are looking for as it is subsidized by the parishes.

And from what I've heard, many school systems are charging for this service. So you're doing public school AT the public school, but now you're paying a fee for it.

(And I realize the supervising adults must be paid, etc, but I'd bristle at paying for an education that's subpar to what was previously free...)

I had a contractor here a month ago complaining to his assistant that he had received an email about a similar arrangement at his kids’ school.  I believe it was $250/week/child to go sit in the same classrooms that they wouldn’t let kids go to school in to do virtual school with an aid supervising.  He was pretty hot about it.  He said he could pay private school tuition at his local parish for that sort of cash and get a real teacher, in person.

If the book is old enough to be in the public domain it is likely on line somewhere and could be accessed that way rather than by scanning fuzzy copies.

I have not seen a textbook for either of my kids except for a coloured photocopy ds13 had which looked dodgy.  I don't think the schools have textbooks.  And they certainly don't want you to be able to tell what they are teaching.

I think if the book is old enough to be in the public domain, then the odds of a top public high school using it as a textbook would fall into the slim to none category.  A novel for literature, yes, textbook pretty doubtful.  I mean in most cases we would be talking about a textbook from about 1925 or earlier.

So, that was definitely my impression from having talked to the oral surgeon. However, I've also poked around, and it seems that if you wait too long, your teeth can shift. What I currently don't have a sense of is how likely that is if I wait something like 15 months to place the final crown instead of 6. Obviously, I don't want to incur any risks.

This conversation is also making me wonder if I should just have a dental cleaning and ignore the implant for a bit, since preserving my other teeth may very well be more important and that could be done in one go. Ugh, decisions.

15 months seems like a long time.  Never done implants, but my daughter can tell a difference after a week at camp without her retainer at night.  When there is room to move your teeth will float around.

*shrug* They aren't pressuring me. My kids are already losing a lot, that's all. I don't like to have them lose more. (And I've had this hole in my mouth for a while.)

Really, I don't need a pep talk, just a sense of the risks.

If you are planning on staying awhile, could you have it done in Boston?  Grandparents to take care of kids while you feel less than great.  They can email x-rays.  I want to like the person working in my mouth and it doesn’t mean you have to change your regular dentist if it’s the oral surgeon you don’t like.

  13. I never have moved just because, but I really want more than my 1/3 acre.  I would love a historic home.  My reality is I live in the home I grew up in, it’s paid off, and anything with more land is too far away.  I totally understand the desire to move - I have looked at these walls a long time 😉 if you and your husband are on the same page, I would go for it.  Mortgage rates are low and at 50 you still have a lot of time in front of you.

Someone posted on FB (I didn't research it any further) that new owners of Homeschooler buyer co-op are being investigated for fraud, so if you are thinking of purchasing anything through them, keep that in mind

Didn’t realize it had changed hands.  The first article I found just now and it said Choi is being charged with fraudulent PPP loans that went for personal use.

  15. It was interesting that I saw this post right after leaving my mom’s house.  She walked to the door with us and stopped me to ask if I had heard about EEE.  I said no and she replied that I really should look up all the stories and I declined-one can only worry about so much as once.  We live in one of the affected counties in Michigan and my boys are still camping this weekend in a state park lovingly known to them as Camp Mosquito.  So far, there are no human cases identified in Michigan.   EEE was a mention last year as well - I assume they sprayed again this year like the article mentioned, but it really hasn’t been a big news story around here.  Mosquitoes carry all sorts of nasty things all the time and we take precautions like wearing long pants and long sleeves if out in the evenings and repellent with Deet when out in bad areas.  I am pretty all natural in most areas of life, but I do buy the strong stuff for camp outs since mosquitoes 🦟 ❤️ ❤️ ❤️ my oldest son.  As for the spraying the news article said they are spraying based on number of cases and it sounds pretty safe.

The problem is that the USPS tracks a package as being delivered to Austin--which did happen.  They have no record of every receiving the misdelivered package--just that I paid for it to be sent--so I can't file an insurance claim because they say they never got it.  So, their records are that I paid for three packages, but only two packages ever entered their possession.  (Not sure how their system handles that the "same package" was delivered twice in Austin.)

Does your receipt show three different addresses or at least three different zip codes?  Does your receipt show three different tracking numbers?  It sounds like it does.  Any chance that there is another post office branch where you could go for help?  Kill them with kindness, tug on their heartstrings, and see if they could issue you a new label to get the package to Dallas or issue you a return?  Make sure to emphasize how old and frail the lady in Austin is and if they have any ideas on how to help and how much you need their experience and expertise to correct this situation.

  17. I would have her tape it back up if the address is still readable and mark on the outside delivered to the wrong address and leave it for the mailman.  I would also file for insurance which is going to force them to try to track down the package.  It can take a bit sometimes so if the package shows up in Dallas you can drop the claim.

If you outsource, that is. Of course it is great if you do everything on your own 🙂

My 7th grade dd is finally up and going in all of hers. She has a lot but I think it is going well. Just getting the hang of the schedules. She has five with MPOA and 1 with WTMA. We’ve used the two providers for years so that part isn’t new.

In the past, dd was able to take MPOA classes and still complete the rest of the MP core curriculum. I am seeing that is not happening this year. I’m going to have to pick and choose what we do and the way we we do it. That is fine, she is getting plenty through her classes. It is just an adjustment for me because the first time we really can’t do it all. She really likes her classes, though, so we are happy.

We are looking at a twice a week cottage school for next year. She is the only one left at home, quite lonely, and there really is nothing socially for her here to meet the need without sacrificing our academic goals. I suspect the workload from six online classes will prepare her for whatever the cottage school could require.

With 6 online classes what is left of the core that she isn’t completing?

I just want to send you and your DD a big hug!  FWIW,  it sounds like you are very fortunate to have the fall-back plan to go where you work!  I have a friend who is a faculty member at a private school and encouraged her kids to go there bc tuition was free or close to it (they still paid room and board).  Oldest did all 4 years.  Second went just 1 year and transferred, and the third one got an associates degree then went to Beauty school.  It wasn't the best fit for the last 2, but it didn't hurt them a bit to start out there!  All are now in their upper 20s and early 30s, working jobs they love,  married to great guys, and all have a baby!   They all saved money by going there first.

Another thing to look into is whether the college has any exchange programs for students of employees.  They would get the benefits of child of employee discounts with the additional choice of schools.  My cousin’s daughter was able to take advantage of this benefit.
