  1. Everyone takes it at their own (their child's) pace. We are taking our time. My two sons who turned 9 in Sept and Nov are in level 4. We were going through level 4 so quickly that I decided to only do it two days a week so we could do CLE's Reading level 4 2 days a week also and keep the length of our days to a reasonable time. We could have been about done with level 4 by now but it is better for us to take it a little slower right now. My guys are pretty good spellers so I am not too worried by it. ETA: I always have them spell all of the words and sentences also. We don't skip, even if they seem to be getting the concept quickly because I think the practice does them good.
  2. I am getting ready to start my two 9 year old sons on CLE's Reading (level 4) and also have them do some Science Detective from Critical Thinking Co (grades 3-4). I sat down with my sons (one turned 9 in early Nov. and the other in late Sept.) a couple of days ago and we all did the first CLE Reading lesson together, where I read the story aloud and we went through the questions aloud together. There was a question which had them infer something from what they had read and neither of them was able to figure it out without prompting from me. I am wondering if this is because they have not been asked to do this much in the grammar stage so they are not trained to really think something through critically and reread carefully before throwing out answers or is it because their brain is not mature enough to make the inference. What do you think? Is it some of both? Do I just keep doing it with them and see if they start learning to think things through better or do I wait a while for their brains to mature?
  3. I am over 50 and have two sons who have recently turned 9 so you are not the only one Iron Ethel! There are certainly times when I spend too much time reading threads on this board but it has been so very useful for researching new curricula that I would be absolutely lost without it. Actually, just recently the search function was not working properly for me and I was lost because I was trying to search out more info on how best to use TOG, which is a great example. I have known I wanted to use it since my sons were in 1st grade but I decided to use SOTW for the 1-4 years. We used SOTW for 1-3 and I had already purchased it for 4th when I saw that the activity guide for 4th had the outlining in it and no coloring pages (my sons love to do the coloring pages while I read aloud to them). After researching the outlining in SOTW 4 and seeing that most people here felt it was really intended for the older crowd and not a 4th grader, I decided maybe I should go ahead and move to TOG now rather than after 4th, since I knew I was going to do it anyway. I came to the board and searched about TOG and read pages and pages of how people used it and how people failed/succeeded at it. I cut and pasted the successful posts into a word doc to reread. After reading SOOOOO many posts on how people made it work for them, I felt that I was seeing some of the same methods again and again. I purchased TOG Year 4 and went to work (we start 4th grade in January). Little by little I was able to break year 4 TOG down into a usable form for us, based on what I had read on this forum. I am now pretty much at the point where I can use it open-and-go for the first 9 weeks and then I will have to print, plan and organize again. I thought after 9 weeks I might have some changes to how I am doing it this time so I stopped after one unit. I am excited to start using TOG now and confident it will work nicely for us. I would have found it a lot more challenging to accomplish if I had not been able to read other peoples' experiences first. I am so thankful for this board. I would feel like my hands are tied behind my back if it was not here. That being said, there are certainly times when I have tried different curricula that didn't work for us because of something I had read here. But I have also found most of the curricula that we use because of what I have read here too.
  4. Thanks. I had looked at MP but I really wanted the DVD teacher that used classical pronunciation.
  5. I have Lively Latin also and had planned to use it after GSWL but, after researching and reading all I could find on about each of them, I decided to switch now to something we can stick with for the long term. We are at around the 47th lesson in GSWL but I have bought the materials now to switch to Latin for Children in January when we start back up again.
  6. How long are you allowed to keep it checked out? I don't think that would work at our library because I would not be able to keep it as long as we would need it.
  7. If I end up using LfC Primer A with two children and I am learning along with them, which/how many books do I need to purchase? I am planning to get the DVD/CD's, the activity book and the history reader....and possibly the flash cards. Would I need multiple primers and activity books? Anything else?
  8. I have spent the last couple of hours looking over LfC's website and reading some of the resources they provide for free and I am very impressed. I will continue my research but I am really liking what I see on their website. Thanks for all of the feedback. This has been very helpful to me. Much appreciated.
  9. Well, dh and I made a decision to follow TWTM classical approach to our homeschool when our kids were still in diapers. We have a lot of respect for their opinion and they have yet to steer us wrong. When something doesn't fit us, we studiously forge our own path but we have yet to stray from their recommendations very far and, so far, it has been a success so we will stick with what works for us. Of course everyone is different and YMMV, to each his own, etc. That being said, I have reread TWTM to refresh my memory of why they felt it was valuable to start Latin in 3rd or 4th grade and we will definitely continue to follow the path they blazed. From what I have read, LfC may be the direction for us. I will be researching it and, if anyone has anything else to add, I am all ears....although I wish we could stick to the question asked rather than debate when is the best time to begin a study of Latin.
  10. This is very helpful SarahW, thanks for taking the time to write it all out. Sounds like working backwards is a good way to go. I will have to go back and reread what TWTM says about starting Latin at an earlier age. I was thinking it was so they would finish it at an earlier age in high school and could focus on other things at that time but I could be totally off on that. Thanks again for this.
  11. I was wondering about LfC and was looking at the online samples last night. So are LfC and LA! both parts to whole and use classical pronunciation?
  12. I updated my first post to include that I am only interested in Latin programs that are parts to whole, as per TWTM. I am not sure which of those mentioned already are parts to whole though. Thanks for your responses.
  13. Thanks for your opinion but I would really like to use this thread to discuss paths from around 4th grade into high school Latin with classical pronunciation.
  14. (ETA: Also, I am only interested in Parts to whole Latin, as per WTM) I have done tons of searches on this and have read lots of threads and am just not getting it. Can we talk about the different paths one might take to get their children from, say, 4th grade Latin into high school Latin, to the point where they would be well prepared to read Latin works or continue Latin studies in University? I have seen the recommendations in TWTM but I really want classical pronunciation and it seems that LC does not take that approach. We do not use Latin in our church services so I can go either way, as far as it having religious content or being secular but I am looking for classical pronunciation. Thanks!
  15. Our school year runs from Jan through Dec and we are getting ready to start 4th grade. We will keep our CLE Math, AAS, IEW (writing) and SOTW, which are working very well. We will switch from FLL to CLE LA for grammar because we would have had to switch after FLL4 anyway. When they start 5th grade, we will be finished with SOTW1-4 and ready to move to something else and I know there will be other changes (introducing more logic) so I decided to make the grammar change this year. Hopefully CLE LA will work for us so we won't have to change grammar when they are going into 5th grade next year. We are adding CLE Reading. I am still debating whether we will continue with GSWL or switch to Lively Latin...or some other path altogether. I have both and we are somewhere around lesson 48 in GSWL It is going well so we should probably just stick with it but I have been researching different Latin programs, trying to plan a path to high school Latin for us. I am also adding a daily geography worksheet of some sort to help them learm/memorize countries/capitals and states/capitals and a daily sheet from one of the critical thinking books, as a lead up to the WTM logic recommendations for 5th grade. I think that is about it.
  16. Please come back and let us know what you find out:).
  17. I don't have as much of a problem with skimming but I think he was more often skipping huge chunks of the book, to the point that he didn't know what other son and I were talking about when we were discussing something that he should have already read. I think there are two real issues here. One is that he is a little bit hyperactive and has a hard time sticking with one thing for any length of time, unless it is something he is really into (he has OCD), such as I mentioned above (Legos, Pokemon, Star Wars, etc.). He has a hard time with self control if it something he is excited about, things like, he can't stand to have any money saved. He has to spend it right away when he has enough to buy something. He can't stand to wait to play his video games for the day and will get upset if we have to go do something before he can play games after school work is done. So I think the skipping chucks of a book is related to this, where he really just can't wait to see what happens. I have decided to have both sons start CLE Reading grade 4 so they will have to answer questions about something they are reading and I can also use the questions in the SOTW activity guide to ask questions about history reading and we will be completing the outlines. I can have them both write a short summary of some of the library books they read for SOTW. For their 'fun' reading from the shelves of books I have preselected, we will all read the same book once a quarter, or something like that, so we can discuss it. Other than that, I will just keep asking general questions about what he is reading. I think this combination will allow me to see that he is reading assigned material and will also allow him to see that there are times when he must read closely and understand and remember what he is reading. I think this will be a good combination. I will try it and see how it works. Thanks for the feedback. I appreciate your ideas.
  18. Thanks so much! This was exactly what I was looking for. I appreciate your help.
  19. That gives me some things to think about. Thanks for your responses!
  20. Is anyone else having trouble with the search function? I use this all the time and have never had an issue with it. Now (actually last night), suddenly, it does not seem to be looking at only titles when I tell it to. Very strange and very frustrating. Has anyone else ever dealt with this? Anyone know how to fix it? I probably fat keyed something that is messing it up. Somebody please help!!! I am lost with the search function!! (I know I can use Google but I have always found the WTM search to be much more useful.)
  21. bump and I changed it up a bit to be a broader question. Anyone? Pretty please?
  22. We are getting ready to start this in January, after having just finished up the Bible Heroes book and I am trying to do some planning. If you use this or have used it (and liked it:) in the past, could you share how a typical week goes? How long does it take to watch the DVD lesson? Is that Day 1 of your week and do they do anything else that day? I am working on putting together a 4 day week plan. Any advice will be greatly appreciated.
  23. If you are using CLE Math and another math program together, could you explain how you do both without over loading your child? I like the idea of this but one of my sons already complains about how long it takes him to complete a CLE Math lesson. I really need to time him and see how long it takes but I don't think either of my sons are spending as much time on math as recommended in WTM. My two sons turned 9 in September and November and we are currently in the middle of CLE Math 309. (Our school year runs from Jan to Dec.) If you could explain to me how you make CLE Math and another math programs work together successfully for you, I would greatly appreciate it. Also, if you could include how much time your child spends on math and the age of the child, that would be helpful too. Thanks!
  24. One more question for those of you who have used grades 3 and 4, did you find 4 to have more writing required than 3?
  25. Thanks for the feedback. I think I will go ahead with grade 3. I have one son who might find grade 4 has too much writing for him at this point....not sure. I already have the reader and first 3 LUs for grade 3 so I should probably just go ahead and start using them. Thanks.
