I belong to an umbrella school and honors can be applied to a class that uses a curriculum that is described as High School honors by the publisher. I hear that some colleges don't consider weighted GPA most of the time, but I don't have first hand experience. My oldest is a freshman.

Has anyone here used either program that can share their opinions/reviews? My son has done IEW since 6th grade. Writing does not come easy to him, but he's been able to do much better with IEW. Thank you both for replying. Jann in TX, yes! It was around lesson 50 that he started struggling. However, he used Math 7/6 and 8/7 before Algebra, so I thought he would be fine. We are a part of an umbrella school that is also a private school. This means they keep all my records and my kids can play sports there. They have a rule that whenever a subject is outsourced, I have to accept the grade given as final and provide a printout from the online class. I will call and discuss this with them. That should be a secondary concern....just haven't dealt with this before so I don't know if I can simply update his course of study. I have also let his teacher know what's going on. Can I ask why you didn't like Teaching Textbooks Algebra 2? I am glad to hear you think it's solid Algebra 1 program. He likes using it and he's flying through the lessons!

My 9th grader is struggling through Saxon Algebra 1 ( 4th edition) I picked up Teaching Textbooks Algebra 1 to supplement and it's helping. However, he complains a lot about the workload. He plays a sport and starts school at 6:30am in order to finish school before practice which it's every day.He'd like to drop the Algebra class to focus on fundamentals using Teaching Textbooks. He managed to get an A in the first semester with Saxon, but he hit a wall in the second semester. I have to walk him through almost every problem in order for him to do his homework. We have 10 weeks of class to go. Saxon is moving too fast for him and not giving enough practice for new skills learned so he's constantly struggling. He's working with a tutor 1 hour a week, but it's not enough help. My position is that it's better to work harder to catch up, finish the course while supplementing and working on fundamentals. We can also work over the summer to make sure he's solid in Algebra 1. The other option we're entertaining is having him repeat Algebra 1 next year. He's interested is Business, Physical Education, Health Science/Physical Therapist, so 3+ of math is ideal.

I may list as English 9 instead of Ancient Literature. The Literature portion is just discussion/ reading and interactive computer assignments ( multiple choice). He will need writing/grammar to round off the credit. The Logic would be on our own, not part of a class. I thought about spreading over the year,,just because I know spring is busier because he plans to play for the school team.( We are under a PSP). I am adding the classes to a spreadsheet.

Yes, the Veritas course is a single course ( 3 credits) It does not include any composition assigments because we're doing the Self-Paced version. He's starting it in July so he can get a head start. It is scheduled 3X a week 90 minutes, plus 2 hours of reading. IEW class: grammar and 1 paper a week, some papers can be done 2-3 weeks. I only signed him up for one semester, so we could drop it in the Spring. I would then incorporate writing with the Veritas class. Portuguese is a college semester course that I would teach in a 28 week co-op course ( 2-hour class) I speak fluently so I just plan in having some basic conversation throughout the week with very little homework. I don't know how long Science would take, but I am assuming 1 hour 4X a week, plus a lab day at co-op Algebra I is 90 minute class once a week, but 60 minutes or less the other days In the fall, baseball is from 4-9:30 ( with driving time) twice a week, plus weekends Spring baseball is from 2-6:30 every day ( no weekends) Thanks for responding and taking a look. I've enjoyed Heart of Dakota K-8th. I have always enjoyed the books and I like how it is highly customizable. I love that is uses great resources and not all books from same publisher. All the lesson planning is done for you, easily laid out. I'm not continuing HOD for High School because my son wants to play a sport in college, so his courses will need to be evaluated by NCAA. I believe Heart of Dakota is worthy of HS, but some of the books used are not clearly labeled HS, which could be a problem. For example, Mapping the World with Art is labeled 10 years and up. It is one book out of many that make up World Geography credit, but I am afraid they won't take the time to evaluate the whole picture.

I am looking for a Marine Biology course my daugther can take. Any ideas? She's been asking about for a few years. We have Apologia Young Explorer Series and she has read several times over. Their Marine Biology course is best suited for 10th graders and beyond.

Hi! If you used either one, would you mind sharing your experience with me? Landry Academy uses Saxon as main text. We're using Saxon right now, so he is familiar with it. Math isn't his strong point and he needs lots of repetition. I am leaning towards the class for accountability/grading purposes. Thoughts?

Thank you! Yes, I am doing the free trial now, but I don't have the books yet. I'm going to buy one on kindle and do the homework and see how long it takes me. My son will be 9th grade in the fall. He cannot believe some kids can do this in 7th grade!!! My daughter could do secondary, no problem, but primary books would be too much. He loves the topics and presentation, but I have warned him of the amount of reading. We're also thinking in starting in June. It would give him more time without cutting into summer.

This is what I plan on using! Man, now i am getting nervous. We love what we have seen online, but I've never read those books, so I am scared now! My son does not love reading, but he is interested in taking the course from what he has seen online.

This board is a wealth of information!!!! I have an 8th grader and when I think I've decided one thing, another pops up! I've looked into NCAA requirements âœ”ï¸ Planned coursework, feel good about materialsâœ”ï¸ Our umbrella school does a great job with transcripts, etc so no worries there. Universities where we live like to see Sat subject tests. What about AP, CLEP.... I was considering using College Prep, for dual credit, but I'm so confused on what path to take. I have no idea what is best! I'm not certain I can adequately prepare him for testing.

My first thought: Is he doing Geometry in 8th grade? Has he done Algebra I? If so, I'd slow down. Sounds advanced. He might not be ready even though he's capable of higher math, it may be too overwhelming. I know it's hard, but try not to compare your kids. My daughter most likely could do her brothers grade work, except math, and she's only in 6th grade. We use IEW too, ( though we are using continuation B course) I would focus on how he has progressed in last 2 years and keep going, even if you have to slow down a bit.
