  1. Hi! I have been looking into Grammar for the Well-Trained Mind for my soon to be 8th grader. He has had some grammar up to this point but I would like to do another year at least. Do I just start with he purple book? or does he need another? Also, with Writing with Skill do I start with Level 1 even if he is going into 8th? I don't want to rush him but I do what to create a solid foundation for him to build on for high school. Thank you
  2. I am doing the exact same thing this year MOH1 lessons, SOTW 1 audio with Activity book and VP history cards. I must say, it is challenging to record it all together to produce my weekly schedule.
  3. I just place my order for the Horrible Science box set. I got them from Amazon. They have a few box sets that are new through other shippers. This is how I got my Horrible Histoy box set and besides the actual box arriving damaged (not there fault, it was shipped to me over seas and the freight forwarder damaged it) the books were perfect. My sister will pick up a few extra ones that are not in the set when she visits England this year. We love Horrible "anthything"
  4. My oldest just finished GWG 7 and like it better then GWG 6. It introduced new LA consecept besides diagraming (which 5 and 6 and heavy in). I love the independence these books offer. As long as you keep upmwith the grading there is no problem.
  5. I use both. I started AAS 1 after Christmas with my boys (8 and 6.9) the older flew through but it was great review of rules and words. We are now working on AAS2 and should be done in a few weeks (this level will also be just for review). My younger has 8 lessons to go of AAS1 and this has been such an asset to his growing reading skills. I have to mention that I use OpGTTR (which is simple and straight forward to use). I am sure if your phonics program is more bells and whistles doing the two together could be overwhelming at time. My boys are not bells and whistles types:D I have to modify AAS a bit to make it more basic and less hands on, weird I know:lol: I have tried many other spelling programs (my older girls were my test subjects) and AAS is my favorite by far.
  6. I do the exact same thing. TT is our supplement to MUS. My girls love TT and do it with ease. MUS is more challenging. We just started with MUS this year and I have them reviewing DVD's Alpha through Zeta and stopping when we have mastery issues. my Oldest will be doing MUS Pre Alg and TT 7 in the fall. I think this might be the last year for TT for her though. I have TT 5-7 so might as well use them:tongue_smilie:
  7. I use both MUS and TT. WE have uses TT 5,6 and will start 7 in the Fall with my girls 11 and 12. I have started with Primer and Alpha (MUS) with my boys 5 and 7. I will continue with MUS with them straight through I think. My girls are watching the videos from MUS Alpha-Zeta and stopping to practice when they hit an area of weakness. My oldest will be doing MUS Pre Alg in the fall along with TT7(for fun cause she wants too!? weird kid:001_huh:) MUS is more challenging then TT. I love the ease of TT though and that is why we have stuck it out but it has really gotten to easy for the girls. So, we are finishing up the year with TT and the MUS DVD's and in the new year using TT more as an add on and MUS as our main math text. I wish I would have started with MUS with my girls. but no use crying over spilled milk, or wasted curriculum in our case:confused:
  8. the DVD is a must IMO. The teachers guide I think I used for a total of 4 lessons. Not sure if that is a good or bad thing LOL.
  9. :iagree:that might be why the binders are now optional. I have so many of those binders floating around my house. I do use them to store all the years work in for each core. I only take out in 4 week sections for my kids (or me) to refer to. I keep all the notes in a small binder, because I am using those all the time. My 1 inch binder all cracked by the end of the year:glare:. I think it is important to find what works best for you and something that you are going to be able to use with ease.
  10. I came across the best Journal ideas at http://www.homeschoolblogger.com/proverbsfamily/780260/ these are the May prompts, the girls are loving this! Just print out the month and let them keep it in their journal and write as they want. My 7 year old son journals EVERYTHING he does! Sometimes drives me a little batty but I adjust LOL. I get him those note books that has that have a page split (blank on the top and lined on the bottom). Then he writes a bit and draws to go with the journal writing. My 5 year old just does journal 'drawing' which is IMO the first step to actual journal writing. We are all notebook lovers here!
  11. yes I would love to know the schedule too. What a great addition to SL1!!
  12. I guess I would be a semi-purist LOL. I use WTM for all of my language arts. I use Sonlight TWTM way (read my adventure At http://homeschoolblogger.com/bahamahomeschooler) one of the main reasons I use Sonlight is the books. They send you everything in one big box and for an islander like me that is a good thing. We are very limited on supplies, books and information. I actually looked into TOG but after seeing all the books I would have to buy I knew that Sonlight is still the best option for "us". I am trying science TWTM way this year with my littles but my bigs will continue with Sonlight and apoligia, might WTM tweek it though ;-) SWB audios really helped me grasp the foundation of TWTM and use it in what we have already. Have fun digging into TWTM!
