Notgrass ATB with 8th grader?
HSMom2One replied to cjgrubbs's topic in Logic Stage & Middle Grade Challenges
We are using ATB for 8th grade and it's going well, although it's very light compared to TOG that we used for 5-7th grades. I think it would probably work well for the year between Hakim and MFW - especially since you want to focus on science. As to the lit assignments, it would be super easy to substitute your own reading list. All you need to do is skip a very, very small portion of the activity assignments at the end of each lesson. I actually asked this question on the Notgrass Yahoo Groups board, and John Notgrass replied the following: You can easily replace any of the literature titles we recommend with another book. Each lesson that assigns literature gives the student 1-3 chapters to read. The Lesson Review book has a few questions about each of the assigned books, but otherwise the literature is not directly tied to other content in the course. We chose books that help the student get another perspective on the time periods being studied. I hope this helps. Blessings, Lucinda -
Well, darn. Caught up on Downton Abbey, et al., now what?

You are my HERO!!! I watched Seasons 1 and 2 on Amazon Prime a few months ago, and so the idea of waiting for PBS to get the new season as they dole them out once per week was something I wasn't looking forward to. I'm SO happy that you shared this site. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you! Blessings, Lucinda -
:bigear: I bought the books and plan to go through the course myself, so I'm interested in what suggestions come up here. Thanks for bringing this up. Blessings, Lucinda

Need a little perspective here
HSMom2One replied to mooooom's topic in General Education Discussion Board
:iagree: This is exactly what I would do. Wait a day or two, then go be with the family and enjoy the rest of the holiday break. Your mom sounds like a very caring person who really loves her friends and family. What a blessing in your life! I hope you will soon be able to recognize that as an asset rather than a problem. Prayers and advice please!

I have some experience with the Candida diet and feel that it's the best solution. My answer came quickly, but I have a friend who's whole family has converted to the diet because she and her dh both have stubborn yeast issues, and since their children are just little they are all eating the same foods together. First and foremost, sugar in all forms has to be eliminated. That means that for a time fruit has to be eliminated as well, and along with that the carb intake has to be drastically reduced because carbs burn into sugar. The previous poster was right on about basically consuming meats and veggies, and I know it's hard but the results are definitely worth it. I found that this website was very helpful, so that is another option for information on diet issues and understanding what Candida really is. My experience with medications was a huge flop. If this ever comes up for me again I will only go with natural remedies. I paid a lot of money to get help from my doctor, all to no avail. Diet was hands down the key issue in my recovery. Yes, please, please, PLEASE bring back the hover feature! It's a real time saver - even when the boards are moving at normal speed. Thank you, Lucinda

Not me, but dh was in the AF for ten years, and my dad, grandfather and all 5 of my uncles on both sides of the family served in the Army, Navy and AF. God bless our military and our veterans! Blessings, Lucinda

Quality Brand Clothing for Full Figured Mamas?
HSMom2One replied to HSMom2One's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I've never been to Chico's before, so I'm convinced I need to find one and see for myself. I liked what I saw on their website too. Thanks, everyone! You've given me some great places to look. Blessings, Lucinda -
We opted to adopt our then baby granddaughter rather than become guardians because after consulting with our attorney we realized that she needed full protection from her unbalanced, self-serving and emotionally led, drug addicted birth mother (our former dil). Having the child become our adopted daughter put us in full charge the situation and we have never regretted it. If we'd opted to become guardians, everything could have been pulled out from under us at any given time. We just couldn't live with that. We went from being Nana & Papa to Mama & Daddy and have never looked back. Blessings, Lucinda

Quality Brand Clothing for Full Figured Mamas?
HSMom2One replied to HSMom2One's topic in General Education Discussion Board
Thanks, ladies. We have an outlet mall near the beach about an hour's drive from here that has a Coldwater Creek. I did buy an amazing sweater poncho there last year for a bargain price, but I didn't look extensively at their other clothes. I'll have to do that next time I'm there. Although I do wear jeans, the clothes I need the most are for teaching at the private school where I work. I have to wear slacks or trousers instead of jeans, plus I need to look professional. I'm an art teacher, so that means I can be a bit more expressive if I want though. Love that part too. :) Blessings, Lucinda -
I used to buy Elizabeth brand clothing because I just loved the quality. I'm not a terribly obese woman, but I have a full figure and like to wear separates that can be layered, and I like things that are made and fit really well. Elizabeth was all of that for me, and I would usually buy off season to save money. Another brand that I really loved was Silhouettes, which was mail order only and then available online. Their quality was always good and I loved the variety of styles they offered. Up until just a couple of years ago or so, most of my clothing was from these two places, plus some pieces I found through Penneys. Unfortunately, Elizabeth Claiborne sold her company before she passed away and the current lines are no longer what they used to be. Silhouettes is also producing a much lower quality product, and that's when I can even find anything that they offer. They must have sold out too. So now I'm shopping here and there, trying to find the type of clothing I prefer and can afford. I've been losing weight and am trying to build up my professional wardrobe as I can afford to do it. I've bought a couple of things from QVC (Denim & Co.) at the suggestion of a friend, and they're okay, but I really miss the quality of clothing I used to buy. I'd love to shop at Nordstrom's, but I just can't afford to anymore. Any suggestions for me? Where do you shop? Thanks for any tips you may have to offer. Blessings, Lucinda

Artists, what material would work for this?
HSMom2One replied to Perry's topic in General Education Discussion Board
Please don't use glue! If you want to go to the trouble to create such a nice, detailed piece, use quality art materials that will last. First, start with the right surface. I would use something like this, and obviously you'd need three. Then, I'd build the raised surface with modeling paste. Finally, I'd paint it with acrylic paint. Have fun! Lucinda B.F.A. When you marry someone you become a part of their family, their kin. Because of this, all nieces and nephews on both sides are shared by you and your spouse. Although someone may refer to them as his or hers from that side of the family, it's usually to make a distinction for those that want to know you and your family better. That's all. Not being there for your own child's birthday is like telling them that their life isn't important to you. We need to shower love on our precious children, and let them know that they are indeed important and valued. My own children would have been devastated if one of their parents skipped the date, and so would I. My guess is that the parent in question was not brought up with this in mind, so it's now an opportunity to help teach them about being considerate and also being good role models. Blessings, Lucinda

wheat free vs atkins for healthy kickstart
HSMom2One replied to workingmom's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I stopped consuming sugar, white flour and milk in June and have dropped nearly 20 lbs. so far. I mostly eat meat, eggs and veggies with very limited quantities of whole grains such as brown rice and when I eat bread I usually go with sprouted wheat or a special whole grain type such as Dave's Killer bread. I drink almond milk instead of dairy, but I do eat cheeses very, very sparingly. Arrowroot or potato starch works for me as a thickener when needed for sauces, and I have switched over to brown rice pasta. I also eat supplements and herbal foods from Sunrider. Just giving up sugar and white flour alone has made a huge, huge difference in my life. I feel better than I have in literally decades. For one thing, I used to have to take a nap every afternoon, but now I hardly think about it. Blessings, Lucinda -
Me too! Hey, I thought that agnostics believe the world was created by God, but that he stepped back and let it go on without any more involvement. Where did I get that idea? Hmmmmmm....And along with that i just hit the wrong button and immediately realized it. Nirvana is a Buddhist belief, not Hindu. So anyway, I'm tickled that I got a 28. Not bad for an old lady. Blessings, Lucinda

We were loyal fans of TT, but dd was not holding on to concepts very long and so we needed to go back to the spiral method that Saxon utilizes. Since making the change dd has completed 76 and is now nearly done with 87 and her understanding of math is vastly, vastly improved. She watches a DIVE video and then moves on to her lessons in the book. Dh is supplementing with tutoring from the book as well, and so with the combination of all three my dd has made a HUGE turn around from where she was 2 years ago. Saxon is a solid program. We're going to move dd in to Algebra I very shortly, but this time she's going to watch Art Reed videos instead of DIVE - just for a change of pace. Both video programs are extremely helpful in supporting the lessons in the book. In response to that part of your post, no the videos don't replace the lesson book. They offer supplemental support that is engaging and helpful. Blessings, Lucinda

I'm convinced - sugar is bad for me
HSMom2One replied to HollyDay's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I've been off it since June 1st and I've never felt better in my life. Whenever I see tempting sugary treats, all I have to do is tell myself, "Turkish Delight" and all urges disappear. Years ago I was sugar free for several months, then slipped back into bad habits after eating one slice of cake. Even though it made me sick, I just kept eating things that I knew I shouldn't. I remember well how much I regretted those choices and how I felt powerless to let it go. Now I'm finally at the place where I know I need to stay in order to be healthy. I think I have more strength now to get back on track if I did have a little dessert treat, but the memory of how awful it makes me feel will more than likely keep me from indulging very often, if at all. keeping maiden name as middle name?
HSMom2One replied to HollyDay's topic in General Education Discussion Board
When I remarried 17 years ago I reclaimed my maiden name and started using it as my middle name, then added my new last name (no hyphens). I did this legally and no longer use my original middle name. For me, it was a matter of personal preference. I missed my maiden name, and as soon as I took it back I actually felt like me again - even with my new married name at the end. I think in this era women are doing whatever they want to do with their name. My bff went through a divorce, took back her maiden name and when she eventually remarried decided to leave her name as it was. For her, like me, it is an identity thing. Blessings, Lucinda
