  1. Hi ! I am starting Foerster's Alg. Trig with my son and would love to know how you use it. Does anyone have a syllabus they'd share? The Kolby academy has one, but all I've found is a few of the beginning lessons - not the whole thing and it is copyrighted. If you have created a syllabus or know where I can purchase one please let me know. If not, if you use it can you tell me if doing all the Q's and all the odd problems in each lesson is reasonable? Would that be doable at 1 lesson per day? I don't mind taking 2 years to finish the book. Thanks so much! Cathie:D
  2. I'm looking for basic government books to read to my elementary age kids. I would like them to learn all the correct terminology and processes for bills, laws, congress, courts, elections etc. Thanks for your ideas!
  3. I see your old post saying you were going to use Foersters with dvd's. Were you happy with it? I'm trying to decide between Foersters Alg 2/trig and chicago math. I've used Saxon through Alg. 1/2 and the TT for Alg. 1, 2, Geom. I don't think my 13yoson is really ready to move on so I'd like to repeat Alg. 2 with a more rigorous program to be sure he's solid. I have plenty of time so I've been considering Chicago since it has Adv. Alg, FST, PDM, and then Calc. so I could fill 4 years of math. Foerster would have only Alg 2 Trig and then I'd have to go into Calc with something else, right? Since Calc would probably be at a cc i'm fine with that Anyway, I'd love to hear what you thought of Foersters. Thanks! cathie
  4. I think I've decided to try UCSMP (Chicago Math) for Advanced Algebra. My son has done TT through Alg 1,2 and Geom. He is not ready for pre-calc. I don't think the TT was rigorous enough to really get him ready. He's only 8th grade so he has plenty of time. After asking a ton of people it seems that many say UCSMP does a better job explaining "why" and Saxon just teaches the method. I do want him to learn the "why". So, one last time... Has anyone used UCSMP through FST and PDM? Did you buy the hardcover teacher manual set or the electronic version and what do you recommend? Does the hardcover teacher manual have any tests/test solutions? Where's a good place to purchase the current version? Anyone who has done both Saxon and UCSMP Advanced Math - do you have any input as far as what you liked? If you have a strong opinion - please let me know.:tongue_smilie: I've got to get this figured out now, since he's without any math to do -- he told me to take my time -- I'm exhausted from trying to figure it out:tongue_smilie: Cathie (mom of 7 now)
  5. In defense of PS - I have 3 children old enough for their English classes. Our experiences have all been excellent. The "rules" don't apply for quotations, scripture, etc. They have taken Writers workshop, Eng. 1, 2, 3 and next year my oldest will be in Adv. comp. The courses are challenging, but he reward is a great improvement in writing each year. As they progress through each level, the expectations increase and the amount of writing increases. The instructors have been able to take them to a level I could not. I am certain that PS has one goal - serving God by serving homeschool families in a Christ centered - God honoring way. It is easy as parents to take comments personally that were not intended to be personal - just based on the standards that have been set. Be careful making judgments on classes you have not experienced from beginning to end. I believe most of the PS students don't take the Lit type classes until after Adv. Comp. so the writing ability is solid at that point. Anyway, every penny we've spent at PS has been a blessing. I highly recommend it. And, BTW, no fair checking my email for "be" verbs and grammar - I'm not the one in the class :):001_smile:
  6. I noticed that the larson pre-calc book that CD uses is different than the one I have seen in the Veritas Press catalog "Calc. Early Trans Functions by Larson" Is the CD book just the first 1/2 or first third of the larger Veritas press book that is meant for at least 2 college semesters? Is the CD pre-calc generally a one year course for most kids? Also - if your dd didn't like CD, what was it she didn't like? the DVD's, the text, difficulty, what? Thanks for the help! This seems like such a monumental decision! :)
  7. My dd has done Saxon through alg. 1/2 and then TT for Alg. 1, 2, geometry. I'm trying to decide if TT pre-calc is challenging enough for pre-calc or if I should switch to chalkdust or something else. Does anyone have experience with TT through Geometry and then something else for pre-calc. Did you child make the switch or did she/he need to go back and do more difficult Alg. 2 before being able to handle the chalkdust pre-calc?:001_unsure:
