  1. We are in our second year of Classical Conversations and didn't realize how much we would love this program. Worth looking into since, like it was mentioned above, all of the campuses across the country will be doing the same thing so it would be easy to transfer and keep up. We love the support and accountability as well as the friendships for both the kids and myself. It is nice to be surrounded with like minded people, even for one day a week.
  2. Mine started 5th and 2nd last Monday. They are almost 10yrs 9 months, and 7 yrs 8 months.
  3. YES! We have been in one every year. We were in a social one the first two years and joined CC last year and LOVE it!
  4. I bought them this summer and can't wait to use them. They really are beautiful and look like a great resource.
  5. So, if you bought the materials from the CC website, could you do the memory work on your own? Sure you could. I, personally, know I wouldn't keep it up as rigorously if it weren't for our weekly meetings. I like the accountability to keep me on track. Are the VP cards on their website? http://www.classicalconversationsbooks.com/fostkit.html - or you can find them on the VP site for the same price. The order is in the foundations guide. Is there anything else you would need? You could do it with just the founcations guide and CP cards. The songs REALLY helped my kids though so the CD would be handy too. I must admit, it looks expensive! Would you need everything to do the memory work or is something optional? Like everything in homeschooling, you can do as little or as much as you want. I joined a CC community last year, our 3rd year of homeschooling, and we loved it. My oldest was a memory master, reciting all 1400 facts at the end of the year. I didn't ask my younger two to try for MM but I do think, that with some work, they could have done it too. They will do it the next go 'round (when they do Cycle 1 again in 3rd and 4th grade). My sister is not in CC and bought just the Veritas cards and did it at home with her kids - she got through one pack. In CC, we did all 5 sets. If you are committed and your kids are motivated, then yes, you can do this at home with no problem. We liked the peer support (both the kids and myself) and looked forward to going each week and learning with friends.
  6. We did CC last year and loved every minute of it. I loved it being on Monday so we started our week off strong. Like others said, I liked the accountability of it all too. In Foundations, there isn't homework to turn in, but the kids do a short presentation each week and reviewed what they had learned the week before. You do get out of it what you put into it. We used it for our core curriculum last year (4 yo, 1st grader, and 4th grader) and I liked that they were all learning the same things each week, making it easier on me ;) We used SOTW and other resource books and got a bag of books from the library each week on that week's topics. My oldest did Essentials too, which took more time and did have a paper to turn in each week (not really turn in, but read it aloud each week so it had to be done). The accountability there was priceless - you can't beat good old fashioned peer pressure to make your paper the best. If only I was reading his papers, he wouldn't care nearly enough, but with friends listening, he stepped it up a notch (yay). While my oldest and I were in Essentials (I tutored it, actually), the younger two participated in awesome enrichment classes. They got art, music, PE, photography, etc each week - love that!! Each campus is different on their afternoon schedule but at ours, even if you didn't have siblings in Essentials, you could join in the enrichment classes. Then, maybe you wouldn't feel like you wasted an afternoon. The friends we made and information we learned was well worth giving up one of our normal school days. The kids and I loved it and can't wait to start up again in the fall.
  7. We could only only 4'x8' pieces at Lowes and Home Depot today but we got it anyway and and just going to use it long way on one wall instead of filling the whole wall like I planned. I didn't want a seam. We bought a piece of trim too to use to hold the markers and erasers. I can't wait to get it hung! Thanks so much for the idea.
  8. Exactly what Angela said. They are using IEW Ancient History starting in the fall, which you said you had done. But maybe doing it with others would help?? Good luck!
  9. Oh girl, you are not alone! My 9 year old son literally would cry last year when I had him journal or write more than a couple of sentences for anything. So frustrating for me as it seems like a fun, no wrong answer kind of schoolwork. He is enrolled in IEW with Classical Conversations in the fall and I was SO worried B-U-T we went to a 3 day practicum and I put him in the IEW class those three days and he loved it. Like he really loved it! He was writing 5 page stories and reading them to the class. Insanity. Do you have any other boys his age that you could do a "writing group" with? I think the peer pressure and just making it fun helped mine so much. I can't wait for the fall now! Good luck. I know how hard this is!
  10. This is SO cool! We have a smaller white board b/c they are so expensive. I just told DH about this thread and we are going tomorrow to get one to fill a wall in the school room. YAY! Thank you so much for sharing this info.
  11. Our grocery store that is usually so expensive had a sale this week so we stocked up on 24ct Crayola for .20, spiral notebooks for .10 and glue sticks 2/.20. I am still watching for a sale on markers, erasers, binders and do they put construction paper on sale? I need to restock that after this summer. I love shopping for school supplies :)
  12. Dh was laid off last October and out of work for 7 months. Umemployment was less than 1/2 his normal pay and we managed to triple our savings during that time. He started a new job June 1st that is exactly 1/2 of what he was making before. It is tough but we will make it work...Just thankful to have a job and insurance again. We have already cut out a lot in the past 9 months and are working on cutting our food budget even more. We were so thankful that we had started Dave Ramsey's plan a couple years ago so were on the right path already when he was laid off. Currently both my SIL's have been laid off in the past month. It is tough out there!
  13. **nevermind, I found the group. I was just looking wrong :) Any interest in starting this up again? I don't CC on the groups list but as I am starting in CC this year, I would love a place to talk about it with others.
  14. I was from '85-'90 (5th through 10th grades). I lived in BA back then.
  15. We made it to Jasmine Moran a few weeks ago and the kids loved it (even being run down). We saw the one in Enid online and it looks like fun. I am glad to hear from 'real people' that it is a good one. We will head there soon.
  16. I was induced and had epidurals with all three and was joking and laughing the whole time. My last was 2 hours from start to finish and I still made sure to get that epidural in...I don't care for pain ;)
  17. Hey Okies! I am Leslie, mom to three - 9 and 6 year old sons and a 4 year old daughter. This is our second year hsing and we are loving it. I went to a CC meeting last weekend in Owasso (nod to Linda!) and am very interested in this so went looking online for some support/info and found this board. We have been very mix and match the last two years - doing different publishers, grades, etc, etc for each kiddo so I am a little nervous to commit to CC...but like what I see so far! It is cool to see so many close by on here and I look forward to getting to know more of you :)
