  1. Thanks for the suggestions! I suppose I shouldn't force SM on my kid just because I think it's a great program and it worked for my other son so I will definitely take a look at Beast Academy and Miquon! And I do I like the idea of going through the "numbers" part then revisiting the SM word problems later on. I think that might actually work for me and my kid.
  2. I use Math in Focus to teach math to my 7 year old. He loves it! My younger son, who is 5, however, can't sit still, listen to explanations and go through the all the exercises. After a few problems, he is ready to move on to the next topic. He was able to complete Singapore 1A and 1B but now that we have moved to Singapore Math 2A, it's become more and more difficult to complete the pages. We use the workbooks only. After answering one or two questions, he simply walks away and refuses to do more. He is able to add/subtract three digit numbers with regrouping, he knows multiplication (tables 1-12) and division. Some topics are too easy for him, such as introduction to multiplication and division. Other parts, especially word problems, is where he has most difficulty sitting still, listening to explanations, writing down the equations, etc. I've been skipping around to make it a little bit more fun and interesting for him but I'm afraid there will be gaps and I don't like the lack of continuity. Can anyone recommend other Singapore math books that are more "fun" and cater to younger children with less attention span? Thanks!
  3. Last school year, my son completed Singapore Math 2B. I switched him schools this year and he is now doing Saxon Math 3. He is very bored with Saxon Math 3 and is beginning to dislike Math because he is not challenged at all. I bought Singapore 3A books for him to do at home. He's flying through the pages of Sing Math 3A and is learning to like Math all over again. I've asked his teacher to give him a placement test to see if my son would qualify for Saxon 5/4, and she said he didn't do well enough to go to 5/4. Specifically, she mentioned he cannot multiply two digit numbers by two digit numbers nor can he divide when dividend is with 3 or more numbers. He has not studied these topics from Singapore 2A and Singapore 3A so I am not surprised that he did not get the answers to these types of questions correctly. However, my question is, was it fair for the teacher to give him a placement test that would include multiplying two digit by two digits and dividing with 3 or more numbers as dividends? Are these topics covered in Saxon Math 3? Because he missed those types of questions, the teacher is recommending he stays in Saxon Math 3. In general, do you think Saxon Math 3 is equivalent to Singapore 3 as well? I've read some reviews here and it sounds like Saxon is a bit behind.
