  1. 7 miles is long?!! hehe! I was thinking we lived CLOSE to town.... our last home was over 15 miles to a small town store... my husband drives over 30 miles to work one way and church is the same distance but different direction. lol. I guess Verizon really is our only option here if you want true coverage - know one wants to hit a deer at night without cell coverage (though we could just walk to the next house like we did 15 years ago. hehe!). We are in Northern Wisconsin though... Verizon knows they own every.single.one. of us and will charge/bill you whatever they want. hehe
  2. Is your plan twice as much because you added your daughters line? She has a smart phone right? If so, that sounds right (or at least 1/3 more). Their website says it is $20 for each line PLUS the plan for it, so if that was the smallest plan it would be $30 and if you are paying for the phone over a year or two that would be more... I am guessing you are paying $50-65 more a month just for her to have a phone. Cell phone lines are crazy expensive! I will not get a smart phone because of the extra monthly cost but my husband has one. We pay about $100 a month for both our lines.
  3. I was kinda excited for a second and had to research VM plans... this would be my dream contract! Unfortunately they have no 'voice coverage' when I look at their website. I know spirit does not work here at all (and they are part of them?) - their website seems to show the same coverage it did 12+ years ago. Am I missing something? I would love a phone company that is not Verizon but really - they are a monopoly here! lol I dont know if I can link it but I am looking at the VM "coveragemap" webpage. I KNOW we have a 4G tower 7 miles from here - everyone was soooo happy to have it go up but yet their coverage map is not showing our area as covered. ETA: I zoomed far in on their map and I see they have coverage in town... were the interstate is, which I know Sprint does have coverage there but the second you need to go to the neighboring town, church or where ever you would be out of luck.. no cover at all. How come they do not use ALL verizon towers - looks like it is just some?
  4. I did this too a few months ago... but realized that Tracfone does not use the 4G towers so I still did not get coverage even though I was on the CDMA network. Make sure that 3G towers are enough for what you need.... If not Verizon will take you back with their "By Back" plan thing - It actually saved me money! hehe
  5. Oh - thank you!!! I am soooo used to things always being done this way but our only coverage option is verizon. I did not realize that other companies did things differently.
  6. Yes but please keep in mind that using prepaid or no contract phones with this method (SmartTalk, Tracphone) might not work if you live or travel in rural areas. They are ONLY using 3G towers. To use Verizons 4G towers they require that you go through them... we would not get coverage in our home without the 4G tower and we live 7 miles out of town...
  7. I might have missed this in the posts - but are you saying that even though your old phone is over 2 years old (your then 2 year contract would be up), you CAN NOT just resign up for a two year contract and get a free phone? We always do that... I do not want to start paying for phones! lol On a side note, I wish Verizon did not control this area... we have no coverage otherwise :(
  8. The story was written from Laura's view - and if she was like me at the age of 8, everything was perfect.
  9. I write mine down on a register, right in my check book holder :) But I dont have a smart phone so there really is no other way then dragging out my computer. We write checks that take weeks to clear and I always want to make sure we have money in the account - looking at a number online would never give me an accurate reading. Just because it says $2,000 in it does not mean that our mortgage has cleared or other payments. People must be rich to not balance! We are usually just making due but God provides. Some weeks before my husbands payday we are down to $100... praying nothing clears that I did not write down.
  10. I always balance mine!! I can not imagine otherwise. We live in a small town and use a local bank - they manually post/approve transactions each day as they come in. For some reason when I went to their ATM and took out xxx in money they ADDED that money to my account. I called right away and they fixed the problem - and were very thankful I told them they should have taken money from me ;-) This was a 4 or so years ago... I am also VERY careful about restaurants. More then once I have had a restaurant waitress 'change' our tip amount. It is frustrating... a college sub place did it so many times they got in trouble! Hand written checks can also be entered wrong, if done manually. We write lots of checks for the children activities... There is no other option other than cash and I dont like caring cash because I spend it too fast.
  11. Thank you so much for posting! I am definitely going with AAR now - I was worried about how it was laid out for the teacher (I have no teaching or phonics abilities of my own!). I dont want to fail! Just opening up the book sounds great for me and my dd will love the games/hands on activities. She knows her letter sounds and we have worked on some cvc words (like the -at word family this week - cat, mat, hat, sat...). But she does not turn 5 for a few more months; would AAR1 be too much? She can blend but does not always *get it* - sometimes she does, sometimes she doesn't. I could just go really, really slow with lots of review (and not everyday). I hate to buy the prereading if we dont need it since they are all so expensive! Thanks again for posting!!
  12. Does anyone have any suggestions for a phonics program that does not use lots of diacritical markings? I planed to use CLE but from the samples I just dont know if it will work (for me, I am not a great reader and phonics scares me to the point of shipping then off until the ps teaches them to read!). Does All About Reading use it? Or Christian Liberty Press... Any suggestions would be great :)
  13. My daughter is 4.5 and is finishing up the Rod and Staff ABC series... we dont do it everyday, just once and a while along wih some Confessions of a Homeschooler printables/games. She knows her letters and their sounds and we have been working on some blending with an Abeka book I got. So..... I am torn as to what to do next. Is the CLE Kindergarden a lot like the R&S work books? They are getting really repetiative and dont cover blending/pre reading like I would like. I am afraid that the LTR will be TOO much because they move sooooooo fast - right? I am afraid she will work through he CLE KII books in a few months and then we will be at a stand still because LTR is for a 1st grader. Has anyone used these and what do you think about them? Is LTR too much for a new 5 year old (the age when we would probably run out of stuff)? I love looking at my Abeka catalog (yup, I know...) but never had anything of theirs till recently. Their Handbook for Reading is great - the conservative curriculums I am using do not even compaire to the Abeka phonics (but I have never used LTR so maybe they do)? I would love any imput from you ladies who have experiance with these two options!
  14. NM amazon has a ton of things :)
  15. Am I the only one worried they might have a 10' tall pot plant growing in their yard?! If he just had the cheap stuff there are seeds... they do grow  I also would flush it..
  16. Our local Family Dollar has $1 Marajana tests, not sure how well they work but maybe you could randomly test him. Let him know you plan to do this and let him know the consiquince if he fails. Maybe for a consequnce he needs to learn how to use his time better - volunteer for so many hours the first time, more for the second, ect... He could help an older family member paint their house, clear brush, yard work, or try a soup kitchen, humane society.. local hospitals and nursing homes have opportunities too. I do not think turning him in is something that needs to be done right now.
  17. I am going to assume that your Elders try to follow a Biblical guidline for running the church, correct? If so, then I would make a list of those scriptures and meet with them. Go through the scritpures together, explaining how you and your husband interpt them and why. Then I would ask them how they interpret them and to explain why. The def of "textbook" is a book about a particular subject that is used in the study of that subject. The subject of this book would be God and His will for man. I personally use the Bible to when 'studying' most things, especially conserns with church and leadership.
  18. When I question the Church I try to see if I can line it up with scripture. The Bible is our textbook - do you have scripture that shows that only male edlership is incorrect? Do you have scripture that shows there should be more of an egalitarianism between men and women? If you have those I would bring that up to eldership, I personally would recommend speaking with your husband before doing this to see what he thinks.
  19. I have not noticed that... but Cover Girl liquid coverup burns my face, especially around my eyes. They must have just changed something in them because I have never had this problem!
  20. I also wanted to say that my husband and I are big Dave Ramsey "debt snowball" fans. I noticed in another posting that you and your husband did not want children until after the debt was paid off and you stated it was because of your "snowball" goal. Did you know Dave Ramsey says that a couple should not postpone children becaus of debt ;-) Also, after reading how your daughter is an introvert and as it sounds you would desire to be home with her - have you thought about the cost of working? Is paying off your student loans 5 years early worth the sacrifice to not be with your daughter now? Is $3,000 in interest over 5 years worth the price of being home with your daughter now? Though it is very clear you would not make as much money doing inhome childcare, it would lower your studen loans some thus reducing the extra intrest for post poning putting them off. Not trying to be push, just sometimes the cost (of extra intrest) is worth the sacrifice (time with your daughter).
  21. This is my frist time posting... but I am a lurkery (have been for a couple years!). Are your loans federal? If so, have you looked into Teacher Loan Forgiveness Program? From your postings you sound like you might qulify (working for more then 5 years, ect...). They also have a Perkins loan cancelation.
