  1. I don't think Tanaqui was being sarcastic. She's often very straightforward with her thoughts. I think she raised an important question - does she need to start over counting when she adds more, or can she continue the number sequence without stopping?

    She has to start over. I though have tried the number line, counting up from, ect but she does not get it...

  2. Using her fingers is not the end of the world. She is, after all, only seven. She will memorize her math facts when she's calculated them a bajillion times, and not a day before. Until then, it's okay for her to use manipulatives, and fingers are manipulatives.

     

    If you give her a problem like 4 + 2, does she hold up four fingers, then say "five, six" while holding up two more, or does she have to start by first counting "one, two, three, four"?

     

    But she has calculated 4+1 at least a couple hundred times... It has been two years, not 'the day before' as you stated.

     

    It is nice to know fingers are not the end of the world but to a NEW homeschool mom who reads the teacher manuals for multiple curriculums that state it is the end of the world (or more like dont do it, they should not 'count'). Everyone on welltrained mind says xtramath... But they also teach no counting!! How can you confidently say its okay to count with sarcasm about her age when us new moms are told over and over not too. Even MUS says she needs to recall 4+1 within seconds before moving on!

  3. Oh, let me give you a hug!

     

    First, I want to say there seems like there is a disconnect between the memorization and the visualization. I wouldn't work on the memorization until after she can visualize it every time. The memorization comes after that happens, otherwise it's just nonsense. We spent an entire month when we did MEP when it was just math facts up to 3: 0+3, 1+2, 1+1+1...and so on. It seemed soooooooooo slow, but it was so right for my kid! He needed to see the numbers build and do it again and again. Once he started visualizing as '5' bonds (5+..., 10+...) his brain made leaps and bounds!

     

    Do you use manipulatives? Are you consistent with them? If not, I'd suggest getting a set of c-rods and have her build every problem you give her until she starts to see it in her head first. Give her as much time with manipulatives as you can until she doesn't want them anymore, whether it's days, months, or years.

    We do use manipulatives but not consistantly. We gave up MUS because she would get confused... Spending 5 minutes to prove to me that 2+3=6, which never worked and then she would realize she was wrong but by then I was frustrated and put them away... Math comes easy to me so I am probably not being empathetic to her.

     

    I made the mistake of telling her to count on her fingers when she was little so she now hides her hands in her lap or behind her back to figure out the problems - she prefers this to the abacus. She say it is faster with fingers... Yesterdays math went well, we used chocolate chips to find the missing number but today I told her to try and do them by memory. Oppps... On that xtramath site it says she should memorize them not count so that is why I told her not to use them... I am probably messing her up by confusing her so much, always changing everything... What is MEP? Thanks!!

  4. I am a first time homeschooler so I am really not sure what to expect or if my expectations are too high... I am frustrated over math and really, should I be because it is just math?!!

     

    My daughter is almost 7 and we have always homeschooled. She LOVES to read and rememeber her phonics sounds (abeka) after seeing them once. She is even reading the Boxer Car Children, book 3, along with other level 4 readers from the library without much trouble. So she is clearly VERY smart and can learn however... when we go through the same fact over, and over, and over and over and over and over for a week she still does not remember it from 2 mintues prior (or even 30 seconds prior...). Like 4+1=6. What?!! 4 and 1 more is....5. Okay then 4+1 more =??? I dont know.

     

    This week we are working on 4+1, 2+3, 2+4 - but she can not remember seconds after telling me the whole fact with the correct answer. Hu? We have tried games for learning facts, we have tried card games (she loves war), I signed her up for the xtramath site and she gets a 10 or yesterday she had less then that, 3 facts right. I know part of that is she is not used to tablets as we are a low tech family.

     

    I just want to back off and take it slow, like does it really matter if she does not memorize them?!! But then how will she ever learn to multiply or divide? Did your children remember all their facts within 3-4 seconds after asking them (without counting) and if not could they move on?

     

    As far as curriculum... we started with Abeka i kindergarten but half way through it got to be too much so I just copied some the Rod and Staff Black Lines sheets and used them. This year we made it to lesson 98 in Rod and Staff 1st grade book but it will take her an hour to do it, mostly because she finds all the adding/subtracting boring, which I get. But even with all the R&S practice she could not get 4+1 without thinking forever and counting her fingers. I purchased Math U See Alpha for her right before Christmas - at first it was great - she could see the patterns 1+....=..... but the next day she would forever and we would have to start over... and this went on and on.  So, how come she can remember long passages of scripture and read anything around her but can not remember math?! We are currently using Abeka 1st grade math but on lesson 25 - she LOVES it. She says it is not math, it is fun :) But I know abeka and someday it will not be fun... because they move fast and without fact memorizing she will struggle.

     

    I am clearly way too frustrated but all of my homeschooling friends have children younger then me, so they cant help. I dont know who to ask or talk to about this...

     

     

     

     

  5. Ummmm... I just read that carseats travel FREE?!!! Is this true?!! That makes a world of difference. lol. I would much rather just bring them - well I would bring the 4 year old with a high back booster and the baby the Graco My Ride which rear faces. Can you bring formula? I need to do more reading...lol

  6. The number one thing is not to be intimidated and just do it. The more you get stuck in the "I can't" mentality about it, the worse it'll get. I have known some families who never go places with their kids because they get nervous - even localish places half an hour away. They get overwhelmed thinking about it. But I think it's not doing them any favors. Kids become good travellers through practice. And even if it's a disaster, you'll live through it.

     

    I personally would just do boosters for the 4&6 yos - I know that's not the current recommendation, but I personally would feel fine about it unless your 4 yo is abnormally tiny. I think there's no way to travel without bringing your seats along. Check the carseat and let the baby be lap in the airplane. We pay for airport satellite parking sometimes instead of Ubering - just depends on the circumstances. Price it out and consider the convenience factors too. We're past the carseats and boosters stage now, but I know people who throw the booster in the Lyft for their kid and it's fine. Seconding renting a car at the destination.

A rental car is probably the best way to go by far but how well do you drive in heavy traffic?  I ask because some people don't drive well at all in heavy traffic (as in big city heavy traffic).  Have you ever driven in big city heavy traffic?   If you aren't used to a large city it may be stressful.  Try really hard to drive when it is NOT the heavier rush hour times.  It can get really, really bad.  Also, I can't remember if this is true in San Diego or not but I know that some areas in L.A. that are parking spaces along the road during the day become actual additional road lanes at a certain point to handle rush hour.  Read the signs carefully.  If your car is blocking traffic because you went shopping or whatever during the transition time you can incur a heavy fine and risk getting your rental damaged.

     

    That is one of my biggest fears... I can hardly handle driving in our 'city' thirty minutes away during busy times (evenings/weekends) and the population is 60,000 :(  How am I going to handle driving when there are 1.4 million people?!! Even my husband gets nerves, though he can navigate in St. Paul Minnesota area better then me.

     

    When I add up the cost of our flights (way too high!) plus the car rental and carseats we are pushing $2,000.... I told my husband I would rather take that money and go out west (south dakota/montana). Those are more our style anyways.

  8. I travel with my three (soon to be four) frequently- 8-10 times a year. Mine are currently ages 4.5-20 months.

     

    Frankly, I find it impossible to travel without car seats. Yes, it’s a pain in the neck, but with the 4 yo and infant, you’ll need them. The 6 yo is fine with a booster for travel. We almost always rent a car if we are traveling in the US, because I have to install and keep three car seats, plus it gives me freedom to go wherever (and not wait for transportation) if DH is working. It also keeps us from needing two taxis/Ubers, which can sometimes happen depending on vehicles available. Traveling with young children can be exhausting and does pose some logistical problems, but I find it worth it.

     

    I would feel very comfortable in San Diego, especially in the places you’ve described.

     

    ETA: San Diego is a large city that very well might have places to rent baby gear, including car seats, etc.  I haven't looked into that, since I find it easier to bring my own.

     

    WOW!! Thank you so much :) I never even thought about renting a car or the fact that all of us would not fit into one taxis anymore. I also looked and they have a great carseat rental place 1 mile from the airport car rental. We can get all 3 in nice carseats for $120. Plus, I would LOVE the freedom - being able to go shopping or anywhere. The trip seems more like fun instead of a burden like before. Thanks again!

  9. I have never really traveled, unless you consider a couple hour car ride from home so this is all new to me. I would LOVE to travel but always feel so intimidated with the unanswered questions I have. Could you ladies help, I do not know who else to ask since none of my IRL friends with children travel/fly but maybe there is a reason, and that is because it is not do able! lol

     

    My husband is going to a conference in San Diego this spring, we live in the rural midwest with a 6 year old, 4 year old and 7 month old.

     

    1. There is no shuttle from the airport to the hotel - how do we get there without bring the car seats? Our youngest would be flying on my lap. It seems like Uber only offers one forward facing carseat so, what about Taxi's? We do not want to bring the carseats... not just the cost, the idea of storing them all in the hotel room is stressful.

     

    2. One of the main reasons I would love to go is that we could do a few fun family things - like ocean (walking distance) and the Zoo... but the zoo is 3 miles away and sea world 7. How can someone without carseats go to these places? My 6 year old would probably be fine since she is almost 7 (but I would feel better if she has something in such a large city!).

     

    3. Has anyone been to San Diego? An older lady at our church went there a few weeks ago and said there are a TON of people. Obviously there will be more then I am used too but would you, a grown women with 3 children who listen most of the time feel safe/comfortable alone at the hotel pool, walking to the beach or to other activities. I would be baby wearing the youngest.

     

    I may have more questions, but these are the first ones that come to mind. I hope I do not sound like a weird sheltered red neck... Thanks!

  10. Does anyone have the math 100 teachers manual? I was wondering if someone could tell me what numbers they want said aloud to the child for problem #4 in lesson 33? I am not sure if maybe I am asking too hard of numbers or if my daughter just does not get it... She can not seem to understand the difference between 15 and 50, even though every.single.day. I say the numbers or 03 and 30.... Thank you!

     

  11. Math Mammoth is a great program. It'll be okay!

     

    If you want the physical books, they do sell them, though I think Rainbow Resources has better prices maybe. If you have multiple kids, you should probably get the pdf. If you have one kid and don't think you'll ever use it again and don't have access to free printing (say, through a spouse's work where no one cares how much you print, which is how I printed MM for ages) then buy the physical books.

     

    There are NO TM's. MM is a worktext - it's written to the student. There are teaching notes at the start for you, though they're not extensive. If you get the physical book and want the answer key, you can also purchase that.

    Have you used Math U See? They look to be mastery also but I also dismissed them because of the blocks/manipulates. I find things like that confusing (to me) and time consuming. Could a person just get the workbook for MUS and skip the blocks if their children are understanding numbers?

     

  12. I would like to think I am somewhat computer savy... but the Math Mammoth website is driving me nuts! How do you purchase things on there?!! Why is there not a link to 1st grade materials - and then click purchase all?!! From what I am seeing they like you to 'download' a workbook and then print it yourself - correct? What order are the suppose to be in and is there a TM?!! Ahhhhh.... I would like a mastery based math program for my dd and though we have worked with some of R&S 1 I would feel better about choosing a program that would challenge her a bit more.

     

    Maybe I need to find a different mastery based math program...

     

     

  13. Dh and I were both the cabooses in our families. There is a five and nine year gap between my siblings and me, and dh's siblings are eight and ten years older than him.

     

    Neither of us liked growing up that way, honestly. We both would have much preferred having at least one other sibling close in age. As previous posters have said, it was lonely and we never formed much of a bond with our brothers and sisters. As adults, we're still not close.

     

    When it was time to plan our own family, it was very important to both of us that our kids be close in age, so we ended up having three kids in four years. Now they have the close sibling bonds that we missed out on, which makes me happy. 

     

    I respect what you are saying but please keep in mind that many people do not have a say when God will give them another child. I wanted my children close, my first two are close and after a couple years of trying for #3 and infertility testing (nothing was found) we continued to try. I am saddened at the idea that we my soon be parents to another blessing and that they may grow up feeling unhappy with the spacing ~ as if we really had a say - because in reality none of us have that much say in our family size, spacing, gender or health.

  14. A piano teacher told me they wait till the child is 6-7 or when they can read. She said it is easier for the child - if they can read a book then they can  read music. If your dd is reading basic words, talking well and already playing simple songs then I think a teacher would make an exception.

  15. Wait, it's for UTI's? People get UTI's after tick bites?

     

    No... You asked "what is the point of one dose". I answered your question - it is preventative. Just like women who take a single dose of an antibiotic for UTI's.... or for those with a heart condition before dental appointments.

  16. The thing is, she doesn't know that she doesn't have Lyme. That's the reason for the doxycycline.

     

    I have had Lyme three times, and a 30 day course of doxy is a small price to pay to avoid getting active Lyme symptoms.

     

    I have had it twice (though my dosing was for 3 weeks, not a month) but a single dose can reduce the chance of it being active. Just like a preventative dose for UTI's or a prophylaxis. I was miserable on doxy for 3 weeks - side affects of the antibiotic, not Lyme symptoms. I would never sign up to take it for 30 days just because of a tick bite... Our family would have someone on it all summer long! lol

  17. What would be the point of one dose? Isn't that exactly the sort of thing that's encouraging antibiotic resistance? Not taking a full course?

     

    No, I think it is more like preventing a UTI in women. Some women are very prone to them (even if both partners shower, she pees afterwards, has lots of hair, drinks tons of water...).

    I'm glad you're being proactive about this -- better safe than sorry!

     

    She does not have Lymes though - taking antibiotics for 3-4 weeks without an active bacterial infection is what causes antibiotic resistant strains.

     

    I agree to a single dose though - and would love to find a doctor who would do that here (never asked though...). I find it no different then a preventative dose for UTI prone women.

  19. If you are moving from abeka to AAS you should he fine. My problem was I was trying to do both at the same time. Their terms are different as are their descriptions of vowels, syllables etc (open door, closed door etc). The way they segment words is neat but again, after having alot of lessons in abeka 1 on the rules of where to segment words based on double consonants, vowels, suffixes/prefixes and the like my kids were frustrated. I much prefer abeka ' s way of handling the rules for using C and K as well as ck at the end of words. AAS treats "ng" as a special sound as opposed to abeka teaching in a chunk with the vowel (same with nk). Compound words get taught at the end of AAS 1 and as you know, compounds are taught early in abeka 1. AAS treats adding "es" at the end as a syllable as opposed to abeka 1 introducing suffixes and hammering them home early. Abeka 1 really covers all of AAS 1 and pretty much AAS 2 as well. Step 7 in AAS 2 introduces silent e if that gives you any indication of what I mean. The special sounds er, ar, or and ou are not taught until step 12 of AAS 2. Abeka 1 teaches those early and combines ou and ow in the teaching like they do with oi and oy. Soft "G" is taught at the end of AAS 2. What I have found is if you follow the abeka 1 lessons and do all of the main teaching points, the workbook pages and the dictation words at the end of each lesson then you are doing the first two AAS books. I feel abeka 1 does a solid job inadvertently teaching spelling. If your child had a hard time retaining those lessons then AAS will reinforce those lessons but you may need to explain the new terminology. This is just a few examples and I don't have AAS 3 to see what it introduces and when. I do plan on using AAS 2 with one of my kids when they are finished with abeka 1. He just needs more repetition than my other kids. My other kids do/will do abeka 2 because they think AAS is too slow and grueling.

     

    Sorry for this wordy response! I was flipping through my AAS books as I typed so hopefully this made sense!

    Thank you so much for this!! It honestly do not feel we will even attempt AAS anymore, I think it will be to confusing for both my daughter and I ;-)  I like how Abeka introduces "ng" with a vowel and how they start early introducing special sounds like er, ar, or, ou a, oy, io in Kindergarten. I will probably continue on the phonics 2 and will start with Abeka spelling - if its working why change it?! Your post was so helpful!!!

  20. Did you use Abeka for phonics in your student's earlier years? What I have found is that AAS really does what abeka phonics does (breaks down words, gives spelling rules, special sounds etc) but sometimes the way abeka does it is different from AAS which confused my little guy so we dropped it. Abeka phonics has been his golden answer. If you didn't use Abeka phonics then AAS may be a great option because you get all of the great rules that give kids the foundation to confidently spell from. I really like it but just not both. I REALLY dislike Abeka spelling for the reasons you said. It is just memorize a list, do some worksheets take a test, repeat. Not my favorite way to do spelling.

     

    I find AAS to be incredibly user friendly. Don't be overwhelmed by the magnets. They are used in steps depending upon what level you plan to begin with.

     

    The spelling I have found the most beneficial for us (and other homeschool moms have mentioned it really improving their kids' test scores) is Spelling You See. I love it so much that I cannot forsee ever not having it in our curriculum in the elementary years. My daughter's spelling wasn't great at the beginning of the year and as soon as she moved to SYS it is amazing. People at her co-op actually comment on how well she spells all of the time. I know it has everything to do with this switch to SYS.

     

    This is interesting! We are using Abeka phonics, it is all I know and understand but I was hoping to start AAS next year instead of doing Abeka phonics 2. We tried AAR in Kindergarten after a couple months of Abeka but it was just too slow and overwhelming for both dd and I. I do agree though that they break down words and have the similar special sounds - which is why I thought the transition would be easy for us!

     

    Could you give me some examples of ways it was different in teaching before I purchase AAS - I have been watching ebay for it!! I noticed in the TM samples their terms are different for special sounds -I was hopping it would be a smooth transition, just an adjustment for me.

  21. Hmmmm ..... I might be the only person to say it but, ABeka Readers are awesome. You do not need a TM because all the comprehension questions are inside the readers. Although they do sell TM's you don't need them.

    The down side is the expense though. I think $12 per book?? But you can get them used at places, put out the word that you need them or wait for an ABeka sale.

     

    I agree. The Abeka readers are great - much better then AAR and CLE ones that we have seen. I was able to find almost all the 1st grade readers on ebay for $20 total :) Check out used!

  22. I was wondering if someone had a list of the Doctoral Drill questions Abeka uses for the younger years? I really do not want to purchase the teachers manual, they overwhelm me... And we do not plan on using their verse selections in the same order they present them. Thanks!!

  23. I was told it is illegal in our state IF you are on the state food program, ect... Our state is so lax on home school so I dont know how true it is, its just what I heard. A mom at our church was taking her state classes to be certified and this was one of the 'no's'.
