  1. Crawfish pie is just what it sounds like - crawfish baked in a pie crust. With lots of butter, bell peppers, celery, tomatoes and seasonings. Kind of like a chicken pot pie, but better. ;) I love crawfish - boiled, fried, in a bisque, BBQ crawfish (which is cooked in butter and lemon juice, not BBQ sauce). I live in South Louisiana.
  2. My older kids (ages 6 and 7) do almost all their own laundry. They right-side out their clothes, put them in the washer, put the soap in, start the washer and then transfer to and start the dryer. They also fold/hang their own clothes and put them away. They also fold all the towels. I do wash and dry those. I do all of my 3 year olds clothes, but he is starting to help. He brings them to the laundry room and folds his shorts. He puts up some of his clothes too, but I help. I do laundry daily. It just builds up too much if I don't (and I only have 3 kids!). I also have gotten into a habit of immediately folding/putting away the clothes as soon as they are done. If I have 2 or 3 loads sitting there, I get overwhelmed. Some days I actually feel a little lost because I don't have any laundry to do. LOL I actually like doing laundry.
  3. Louisiana does - it allows to deduct for curriculum or textbooks and supplies. It also allows you to deduct a certain amount of private school tuition. I think this is new this year.
  4. We do everything. My son is in 1st grade as well and I don't really find the lessons to be too long. It probably takes 45 minutes to do the whole lesson. That is me teaching the new concept, doing the 1st part of the lesson together, the number writing book, drilling flash cards, speed drill, and then independent work. I was not confident in my facts as a child in elementary school and it affected my math for the rest of my school years. I feel repetition is important for math. He is my oldest, so I am by no means an expert, but this is what we do. :001_smile:
  5. The cut-off where I live (Louisiana) is the child must be 5 by September 30th of the year they start K. My kids birthdays are October, December and January, so they will all be among the oldest. Especially DS1 who missed the cut-off by 11 days.
  6. I can't compare the 2, because this is my 1st year homeschooling and I use CLE for my 1st grader. I can tell you it takes me about 20 minutes to teach the lesson, do flashcards, speed drill and explain the independent work. There is virtually no preparation for me. I just grab the daily flashcards and go. Every couple of days, you have to move flashcards around, but it is no biggie. If it is a topic that he has trouble grasping, it takes a little longer of course, but not much. It is laid out very well and is easy to use. I love it, but again, have never used BJU.
  7. My 7 and 5 year olds (both boys) take a shower with their almost 3 year old brother. I sit right outside. They both do their own laundry from starting it to putting it away. They right size out their clothes in the washer, add soap, start it, then switch it to the dryer. When done, they take it to their room and fold/hang their clothes and put them up. Clean room - I have to tell them specific steps in order to meet my expectation/level of clean.
  8. I had surgery last month for a 4 mm stone. I had a 60% chance of passing it on my own, but during surgery, the dr had trouble getting it with the laser. I chose not to do lithotripsy b/c my dr said it could take more than one time. After surgery he confirmed I made the right decision. Surgery, having a stent and getting a stent removed were not fun. but there is nothing fun about kidney stones. The best part is according to my CT scan in the ER, I have at least one other stome in my kidney. I had my first stone at 18 (I am now 30 - celebrated my 30th bday in intense pain). I have never had lithotripsy, but know several people who have had it and were pleased with the results.
  9. 2000 square feet for 5 people. I would love b/t 2500-3000. We don't have a business, but we do school at home.
  10. I just signed my kids up for AWANA and it was 61 dollars for 2 kids. 30.50 each. The club fee was 25.00 which covered registration, their vest and their first book. I also paid 5.50 each for the optional handbag. Next year, the club fee will be 15.00 each because they will both still be in Sparks, so will already have the vest. We have to pay for additional books as needed through the year at a cost of 7.00 each book. They do say they don't want any child to be left out due to finances and to contact one of the co-commanders or the Children's Minister if there is a problem.
