  1. My husband is a mechanic....so there is no such thing as a dead car to him. To me, however.... when costs outpace useability. When it is no longer safe. when we can't find quality parts.
  2. I found a recipe for Zucchini Cake (think carrot cake) that is pretty darn good...everyone here will eat it. I didn't even have to put icing on it. LOL congrats on hiding the Zucchini!!!
  3. We're in Detroit Lakes, MN.....no fires here, but I heard on the radio that the arrow point was battling blazes and there would be bad air quality as it blows eastward. Here's an article in our local paper... http://www.dl-online.com/event/article/id/62962/group/homepage/
  4. No. My family hasn't exchanged gifts at expected times in years..... over 25 years probably. ....and we finally got husband's family to stop/slow down on the present giving.
  5. My 10 year old son really did not like this book. It wasn't the language/writing...but the character of Toad. He hated him!!! LOL I just asked him what he thought of Toad and he responded, "Horrible! He was Horrible!! He just mooched off of everyone!" Reading the book was agony for him. He loved Understood Betsey..... He is liking Robin Hood (Pyle).... He loves the Little House Series...... but he can't stand Wind in the Willows.
  6. Mine changes with my mood. Today is lonely, bored and hurt....missing my Mom who passed away 5 months ago.....and other things.
  7. My humble apologies to all. Obviously I am in error. milovaný, I feel no ill toward you or the others..... I don't understand what I said was wrong, but after 50 years on this earth I have learned that I am not the most socially correct animal sometimes. I liken forums to standing on a porch, sipping tea, and chatting about what we are doing with homeschooling, kids, dogs, etc. If someone next to me had said something about what to give out for a holiday I would say something along the lines of what I said and then watched the conversation progress around the porch. I have no "hidden agenda".... I'm not there to stir up trouble.... the words would just tumble out of my mouth and the conversation would progress.
  8. I'm done. I don't see what I have done to be called out like this. At this point I feel as though it is pointless for me to be here if I can't answer anyone's posts, I might not stay exactly in line with the "proper" answer. I will bow out ungracefully and leave because I have sullied the hallowed grounds of the WTMforums with my evil personality. (I still don't see what I did that warranted this calling out.....:001_huh: ) :svengo::party:
  9. Okay..... the title of the thread is.... if you don't give out candy for halloween... what do you give? I am thinking of NOT handing out candy this year, but I am not sure. So I was curious if I was alone. My reply was, more or less, that we don't give out any candy. How is that against the rules for what we ccan answer? Question: If you don't give out candy for Halloween what do you give? Answer: We don't give out any candy. Statement: I am thinking about NOT handing out candy this year, but I am not sure. So I was curious if I was alone. Reply: We do not give out candy but have a party in the backyard with the kids. Implication: You are not alone if you weren't going to hand out candy. Now if she had asked "What do you give out that is not candy"....then you would be correct....but I probably still would have responded.
  10. Lighten up, Frances. I know for myself, I just don't get into Halloween... I don't care if anyone else does it or not. I don't think it is "awful".... just not my cup of tea. Sorry for raining on your parade....I thought it was a free speech kind of country....Perhaps I was mistaken.
  11. Phew! I was beginning to think I was the only "grump" here.
  12. We don't give out anything.....close and lock the door, turn off the light and go out back for our own Harvest Party. .... campfire, cookout, pinata, games, singing and laughing.
  13. This. ...and that saving from sin stuff......PLEASE!!! Stop trying to save my soul!!! I'm on the list of that guy about the cults and stuff....I'm a Christian Scientist...and people are always trying to SAVE me. STOP IT!!! :tongue_smilie:
  14. Now I'm beginning to rethink everything I've ever posted here... Oh well. :D
  15. I have used and love their spices and the real vanilla extract. Love them!
  16. Read my blog entry about this topic.... my link is down there somewhere \/ I was virtually in a panic over this thread, but feel alot better now. :D These kind of threads come up every now and then and I think it is good to read them but we also need to put it all into perspective. Most of us are doing a pretty good job homeschooling......some could do better........ and some shouldn't be doing it at all (trust me, I know what I speak of....don't even get me started on my sister who "homeschooled" her two boys and now they are barely able to read and can't hold jobs doing the most menial labor). Homeschooling is hard work! I remember Donna Young (on her old forum) jumping on me because I said that homeshcooling was a lot of fun.... as the years have gone by I see what she meant. HSing is work....mostly work....and sometimes fun...but a lot of work, nonetheless. http://smokedpam.blogspot.com/2011/08/it-sneaks-in.html
  17. Goal? The same as it would be whether they are homeschooled/public schooled/whatever...... To be kind.
  18. In my personal experience (including my own ramblings)..... generalizations like "Most homeschool kids go back to ps 2 years behind" are desperate blitherings of people who a. don't know what they are talking about. b. are feeling defensive. c. want to hurt the recipient of the comments. d. are trying to make themselves and their own choices superior.
  19. I offer apologies readily.... doesn't bother me a bit. Hubby never used to....but he's getting better. What I find now (after 22 years of marriage) is that hubby will not acknowledge the things I have done that have helped the family. Managing the money/doing the taxes/cooking the meals/baking the bread/turning a foreclosure of our house into the purchase of a new house within 3 months of losing our previous home...... I have a long list. :D
  20. I agree....and my post was sort of, flippant? ingenuous? meh? After 8 years of homeschooling.....I've realized that I don't much care what the public school system has to say about my homeschooling. My kids are bright, inquisitive, well-rounded individuals.....they get along with other people..regardless of their ages, etc. They are kind and loving to one another. They ask thoughtful questions and are always loving to learn. We may be behind in some things and ahead in others....that is the way of life. I have been publicly demonized on Facebook by a family member because my (then) 8 year old wasn't a fluent reader who was willing to "perform" for my brother in a restaurant in front on complete strangers. My brother was cruel and vicious.......... kind of an interesting behavior for him considering he was a high school drop out, dropped out of the Air Force, and was probably drunk and stoned when he vilified me on FB. He is no longer my friend and I haven't talked to him in over a year. Nope....I don't care what any "expert" thinks of where my kids are academically. Given the current state of our public schools in this country....I don't think they have much room to talk.
  21. So we are behind by 2 years.......... according to a public school principal. I don't care.
  22. When my husband told my kids something like "white blood cells are what digests food in the stomach"...... I figured I'd do all the teaching. There's nothing stupid about the man....but I'll let him stick to mechanics (he's a diesel mechanic who currently works on JD Farm equipment). I let him handle a lot of casual questions about how things run and why does that work, etc.
  23. Oh you have just pushed me over the edge!!! I NEED!!!! another Cattle dog!:lol::lol::lol::lol: (Did she tell you that the garbage was talking smack about you and she had to teach it a lesson? Mine always gave me that story!) Really it was the Budweiser that made her do it....she drank them all herself, didn't she?
