  1. Thanks EKS...... I guess when you hear so much of the pros and cons of a curriculum that you start having doubts.... I've heard/read that Saxon doesn't prepare the kids for doing the math in real life circumstances, etc. That the kids may finish the years curriculum but not know how to apply it........ I guess, long term, that is my fear. Math is my waterloo...... I just don't know what to do about it. I'm okay doing math myself, but don't want to screw up my kids...... I guess, one way or another, we'll work it out.
  2. "It's a small world" keeps coming to mind whenever I check in here....... :p Marietta is only a skip and a jump from me.
  3. That's okay...... my 7 year old isn't one of the "he read in utero" either. He's just getting the concept of CVC words.....
  4. Has anyone here had this experience....... my girls have done Saxon Math up through Math 2 and we were beginning Math 3 and they just don't have mastery of their addition tables. They get the concept of Addition and Subtraction and even sort of understand multiplication a wee bit........ but they just don't have good recall for addition/subtraction........ is it me (probably) or is it the curriculum (possibly).....???? For the time being we have put Saxon aside and are just working on the Addition tables day by day..... little by little... we are somewhat following Ray's Arithmetic. But has anyone found themselves in the same place with Saxon? My girls' should be at 4th grade (could care less about math) and 3rd grade (very competitive and wants to excel).
  5. I had a Cocker Spaniel that I took in for regular puppy vacs........ he got his shot, I brought him home....... and he was blind in one eye. I took him back to the vet (I worked for the vet, he's a friend) and he said, "yup! That happens sometimes." Nothing could be done for him.... he lived out his life blind in one eye. :(
  6. I don't know what to say.... except what we do.... I never wash with soap, only a green scotchbrite pad... and I really try not to scrub it too much... just get the latest foodstuff off of it. When done washing I put a little shortening on it with a paper towel and put it on a warm/hot burner to really dry it and open the pores while finishing the kitchen.... then turn the burner off. That's it. My skillet is probably 18 years old and is a thing of beauty. I don't know whether I would say it was as stick-free as teflon..... but it's close. Good luck! A seasoned skillet is beautiful! (Man!!! I need a life!!! :p )
  7. We don't vaccinate our kids...... but the dogs have Rabies Vaccinations... it's the law. As for boarding animals....... we rarely go out overnight....... and if we have, we have someone come in and tend to the animals. I used to work for a vets office/boarding kennel........ we took in dogs without shots if we could "quarantine" them out to the back part of the kennel... (they were outside dogs).
  8. Do you use the "New Posts" link up above......... that's the waay I deal with forums like this.... just a thought.
  9. We're out in Rockmart.......west of Marietta. HI!!
  10. Latin Centered Curriculum Kind of a less is more philosophy...... do less, but do it best. It is more of a grammar driven method rather then a history driven method. I'm sure others will come on later and give a more precise accounting of LCC..... at least you should hope so. :o:D:p
  11. Sounds like dry socket...... I've never had it, but I was warned about it when I had my wisdom teeth out and others also. The dentist will help.
  12. Recently I purchased Math Detective Beginning published by The Critical Thinking Co. (I think I got it from Rainbow Resource)....... we haven't used it yet, but it looks like it might work. you have a story... and each sentence is numbered.... then the questions follow........ referring back to the sentence number if needed. I can't remember what the book cost, but it is just a small workbook..... it is meant for grades 3 - 4... but it could work if you went slowly and took your time. That was my reason for purchasing it...... to supplement their word problem work. Good Luck.
  13. I love the new format........ I'm less intimidated to jump in and add to a thread. On the old boards it was like breaking into a private party.
  14. We drive a lot less..... but we are pretty far down the financial status ladder (particularly with hubby being laid off on Friday.... guess we won't be going anywhere for awhile. :p ).
  15. All 3 of mine were homebirths.......the middle child was over 10 pounds and I had no tearing..... very little pain. I used a birthing stool for the last two....loved it. The whole experience was awesome!! I recommend homebirths all the way!!!
