  1. Ag Mechanic at a John Deere Dealership... he has an Assoc. Applied Science in Diesel Technology.
  2. Have him work on projects from a cultural perspective......inventions/technology/woodworking/animal husbandry/tinsmithing/etc. A "what was life like in the 1700's" kind of thing....
  3. Yes. I have math through high school..... literature would come from what I have and the library.......... I don't have a formal Science curriculum through high school, but I could manage with my old college texts....... between what I have, the library, and what I can find online or on my kindle, I feel confident I could homeschool through high school. I think. :tongue_smilie:
  4. Those trees look like they have been "pollarded" ..... a method of pruning to maintain the size of the tree. http://www.gardengatemagazine.com/extras/63pollarding.php
  5. Also, keep in mind that plants are not "forever"....they have a life span. It could be at the end of its life. It does look like a serviceberry....do what you can for it, pruning at the right time of year will help alot, I think.
  6. I just keep hearing Dueling Banjos playing in my head. Over 30 years ago we (my parents and siblings and I) moved from Chicago area to a small (then) town north of Atlanta..... culture shock. Now I miss the heck out of the area.
  7. I hadn't planned on taking a spring break....but, at the last minute, declared this week mental health week and dropped all teaching. The kids didn't seem to mind. :D
  8. When I was really little I wanted to grow up to be Lassie....some would say that I've followed that dream, I really can be a @itch sometimes. :D As an adolescent I don't think I ever gave much thought to what I was going to be/do........ I still don't. :tongue_smilie: Que sera, sera.
  9. Apologia's Exploring Creation series.... very, very, very, strong dislike. Turned me from textbooks for science for a long time. I have a Biology Degree and found these textbooks completely unpalatable. The kids weren't very thrilled with them either (Gee! I wonder why? LOL).
  10. You must have sent those winds to Central Minnesota last night.... whoooweeee! I'm afraid to see what the daylight will reveal!
  11. This is sort of what we have run into.....except we're in the middle of Minnesota! The closest Church for us is a little over an hour away and the next closest is over 2 hours away. I have been in contact with our headquarters/Mother Church in Boston about us starting a small group where we are, but they just told us to drive the distance. :001_huh: So we have started just doing church at home. I would rather go to a regular church but it is apparent to us that home church is what we need to be doing right now. I love all the ideas everyone has presented, thank you! Keep them coming.
  12. We did a move from GA to MN back in 2009....quite a change in many ways. We are still adjusting, but we do love MN...it's just....... different. We rented the Uhaul...packed the kids and the dogs into the van and drove for 3 days up to MN. Quite an adventure. It was the right thing for us to do....without a doubt. You can read about it here...... Three Years
  13. I basically just cracked it open and started...... there should be directions for how to use it in the front. Sometimes we could get through a few pages...sometimes just one. I supplemented with making word starter cards and taping them onto the hallway for the kids to recite from before going to bed. BA BE BI BO Bu Each card was a consonant/ vowel set and they would go down the hall reciting them as they learned them. we did the whole book in a very relaxed manner....the girls did very well with it...the boy, not so much. LOL He took a lot longer and many different programs before he was finally reading at age 9. The girls were reading by the time they were 5 or so.
  14. You are very brave, thank you for defining "grace" for me today. :)

  15. Tuesday is going well. Got a call from my SIL in PA and she is going to pay my family's way out for a visit in June....by train! OMG! That ought to be fun....33+ hours on a train with 3 preteen/teenagers. I hope we can go, we'll see. School is progressing ..... switched to AO and it has been very good for about 1 and 1/2 years now. Can't imagine doing anything else! We've been homeschooling for over 8 years now, I guess. We love it! (now).
  16. I deleted my Pinterest account last week.....I was beginning to hear too many things about privacy issues. Now, that said, I still have my Facebook account... :tongue_smilie:
  17. My husband has an Associate of Science Degree in Diesel Technology....he has always worked as a mechanic, usually on diesel equipment. Currently he is working on John Deere Agricultural Equipment.
  18. I have unfriended my brother and his family from my FB account....for totally trying to trash me for homeschooling. The fight got mean, vile, and hateful. I will never speak to him again unless he apologizes. There are some people we just don't need in our lives.... ones that are so venom filled top the list. I'm sorry this happened to you....there is no call for it. Shake the dust from your feet and move on. :001_smile:
  19. My Oneida flatware is 18/8.... I have had it for over 20 years and use it every day..... I'm fairly normal. :tongue_smilie:
  20. Follow your heart! I've gone from Unschooling to Classical to Traditional to Charlotte Mason............ after 8 years of homeschooling we are finally really, really happy. Enjoy the adventure. :001_smile:
  21. My husband is a John Deere Ag Equipment mechanic....he loves his job and will come home and tell me all about the latest combine or tractor he's been working on. He loves the combines! It is good to see him happy in his work.
  22. :grouphug: You'll make it through this.....but it is a hard, hard time. I'm so sorry.
  23. What's really frustrating is that when they get to class....without their bone, they say, "My Mom never got it for me!" :glare:
  24. I lost my Mom in April of this year.... my very best friend. It wasn't pretty at the end, from what everyone said...(I couldn't make it home) and that wasn't her....she was never one to be difficult or a burden to anyone. I think, when they are like that...that they have already gone...that what we see before us isn't who they have been all their lives. Her journey is almost over...... my prayers for all of you as you get through this. :grouphug:
