  1. Hello, my dd 16 has started doing online kaplan ACT prep, however she is struggling with science the most. Comprehending matter and interpreting data in science is hard for her. Ideally, she needs to practice some similar, but easier science questions, and work her way to the ACT science. Any suggestions on online courses etc? Thanks

  4. Thank you PeterPan. She struggles with writing too, reading comprehension has improved some with practice. She has always had most difficulty with narration, and expressing emotions with story telling. I am looking for any resources to help her expressive language.
  5. My 16y/o dd, ASD, has had great difficulty with conversations. She did not have any speech delay, but had difficulty with self expression and , has had speech therapy on and off for yrs, and also has been going to weekly social skills group for last 7 yrs, however small talk is still extremely difficult for her. She struggles with narratives, perspective taking. she will just answer in 1-2 words for any questions when visiting family members, and has difficulty reciprocating. I am at a loss, how do I help her improve conversation skills? The weekly social skills class she attends for high functioning ASD , she does better there according to the teacher , however I don't see any carryover with us at home, or at school. I am so worried, as this is the most basic life skill. Please help advise... Thanks
  6. We are looking to outsource writing (rising 9th grade) can anyone share their experience with different programs out there? Thank you.
  7. Hello, Our dd 15 y/o (high functioning ASD, SLD math, reading) is seeing a psychologist to help with various issues, one of them is to be independent in self care. She recommended me creating social stories for various ADLS's/self care, can anyone share what resources they use for creating these? The other huge area to work on this summer is executive functioning, what resources have people used successfully? Looking for something simple and easy, that can be built into daily routines. The third thing this summer is to work on Mindfulness, any tips on introducing this in a way, so she is amenable to doing this without fussing? hoping she realizes its benefits and can continue this in the long run. Thanks a bunch!
  8. May I ask, What helped with auditory processing? we may have similar issues with our dd. Thanks.
  9. My dd 14(mild dyslexia, dyscalculia, high functioning ASD) has always had very difficult time with matching pitch/tone when singing, but as she has gotten older, she has become so discouraged, that she believes she is tone deaf, and does not want to listen to music at all or try to sing at all. Sadly it has to do with being made fun of at school. I want to get her confidence back. Can anyone recommend good online singing programs? she refuses a vocal coach, we tried that for 6 mos, was not a good fit. When younger she also did 2 yrs of piano lessons, when she was 7-8, but she struggled a lot, with correct fingering, using both hands etc, and the teacher was impatient too. Now She wants to play piano again, and prefers to do online lessons. Does anyone have suggestions for a simple, easy to follow online piano lessons? she tried some free lessons on Flow key, its interactive, but at times it was not accurate and there would be sometimes a lag time for it to recognise if she played the right key. Simply music is another site, has anyone used it? is this interactive, where it gives her feedback if she played the wrong key? if not how does this work, and what was your experience? Appreciate any help. Thanks
  10. We are looking for any online 8th grade language arts and writing courses, where minimal parent support is needed. Hoping where they have short teaching videos followed by practise tests, and way to track progress. Also wanting to sign up for an online writing program, where teachers can teach and give feedback on paragraph/essay writing, any Suggestions? Thanks.
  11. We tried it , it did not work well. The HR monitor did not seem accurate at correlating with frustration level. There were times when she was calm and it would be in red zone, and at other times vice versa. She had no patience to deal with this.
  12. "One really lucky summer DD and DS were in a summer program at a school for kids with learning challenges. The math teacher took a couple of days to dig in with each student and find their strengths and weaknesses then cobbled together individual math plans for every single student in her class. DD made a lot of progress during the 5 weeks she was there." Could you please share which summer program did you use? we are looking into one if possible, we have math and reading struggles.Thanks.
  13. Yes sounds similar issue. We just got Mighteor and have been using it for a week now, lets see. I will look into zones of regulation, she is at an age, where she does not want to listen, she complaints I nag all the time. I need to look at behaviorist option, it may cost$$$, as I believe Blue cross will not cover. Appreciate your help.
  14. DD14 (ASD, ADHD) has great difficulty slowing down when doing any academic work, be it reading or math. When we read together I am done with 1/2 page , when she has finished the page. This speeding has been causing errors, several teachers over the yrs have tried to convince her to slow down, but she is unable. This impatience is because of ADHD, unfortunately she has not tolerated any stimulants. Does anyone have any ideas to help her slow down, please. Appreciate your help.
  15. dd14 (ASD,ADHD) has always had difficulty controlling emotions, it has not improved as she gets older. Laughing hard and long for silly things, something most teens may just smile at. What can I do to help her control laughter? therapist has asked her to think about something serious to keep neutral face, but she is unable to control. Thankyou
  16. Dd 14 was a very fluent reader at early age, her comprehension problems became evident last few yrs, we just had the 4th evaluation completed, as the previous 3 did not do indepth testing for reading disability. She was given SLD-reading this time. GORT-5 oral reading index-composite score 92, CTOPP-2 she had very low scores in phonological awareness, particularly phoneme isolation. Her reading rate is above average, but due to her fast pace of reading, she drops accuracy. Her reading style impedes her comprehension. He explained her ability to say words with parts missing and construct words with multiple parts was low average. A lot of her problems are due to going toooo fast, she is UNABLE to slow herself down. She tries to read aloud and that helps slow, but she hates reading aloud all the time, its an uphill battle. I am not sure how to help her, where do I begin now??What curriculum do I need to start her with to improve all her reading deficits. She also has poor vocab, low average spelling, dysgraphia. Thanks
  17. Ok, I am sold. Just ordered it! OhElizabeth ,Thank you for the detailed explanation.
  18. Can anyone suggest any fun way to work on controlling anger and frustration? my dd 14 has difficulty with controlling emotions, she gets frustrated often while doing Math or anything challenging. She went through counselling with psychologist, deep breathing etc, she is not consistent with it, if I dont remind her, and ofcourse its hard in the moment itself. I was looking at Mighteor (seems pricy), however it states ages 6-14, can anyone share their experience? Are there other similar products that are good? she does loves video games, even ones that are below her age, any thoughts? Thank you
  19. I really appreciate your help, and so admire your knowledge, and lot of other devoted mamas on this forum, always willing to help!
  20. Hello, I wanted to get a grade level estimate for my dd,14 8th grade, what testing can we use for Math and reading, language arts? Thankyou!
  21. we have tried Zoloft with my dd since 2 mos and she seems to be able to express better, in giving specifics and also spontaneous speech, I do think controlling anxiety has helped her with language.
  22. No they don't provide intervention services in our case, they dont work with ps either, they provide some accomodations, like more time on testing and preferential seating etc. they have teachers for dyslexia that work on OG, but none for hyperlexia. I will try the Linguisystems, they do look similar to Visualising and verbalising. Will get SLP eval and Tt again. Thank you much.
  23. OhElizabeth, I really appreciate your help. I am hoping to find a supplemental curriculum to follow all year, as my dd is starting 8th grade at private school soon, we had a tutor last year homeschooling but she did very poorly on testing this summer, so I need to work myself this year with her. I have read a whole lot of positive posts on Barton, would that be helpful given that we need to improve comprehension? Also I have no knowlege about SWR/WRTR? I feel soooooo overwhelmed. Bottomline is that she will be spending 8 hrs daily at a private school and we will have some time on weekends/weekdays to do supplemental work, what would be the best course?
  24. She has seen SLP and had testing last summer, did therapy for 3 mos and stopped as she got busy with school, we may need to go back.,I wish there are some easier websites that she can do at home to improve language.Thank you
