  1. https://www.leevalley.com/en-ca/shop/garden/indoor-gardening/floral-design/10208-lee-valley-microwave-flower-press?item=GM426 I number of posts mentioned pressing flowers.....I had to mention the above flower press that I received as a gift. We are able to go for a walk, collect samples, place them in the press and have them in our nature book the same day!
  2. I would appreciate recommendations for books to use to help teach Grade 3 science. Books on teaching about a variety of subjects... 1. biomes 2. biodiversity 3. learning about landforms and environmental changes caused by ice, erosion, wind etc 4. introduction to thermal energy 5. learning about matter and introducing the concept of atoms Thank you
  3. Looking for a handheld portable microscope that I can hook up to my iPhone or iPad and take on outdoor trips. I like the Zoomy 2.0 handheld microscope through learning resources. Is there a newer model? Does anyone have any other recommendations?

  5. HomeAgain, thank you for your reply. I couldn't find any gradient puzzles either. I will be heading to the paint store once the Christmas shopping rush has ended. What a great idea? I will also be using your other ideas. Thank you.
  6. I enjoyed reading your post. Thank you. My dd 3 and I love doing puzzles together. I would be very interested in learning more about "part to whole puzzles or gradient puzzles" and "logic puzzles". Where can you find puzzles of this type that a young child can start doing? Do you have any favorites that she can do later on as she gains experience? Also, I would be interested in teaching her to play chess. Is there a book that teaches "chess with stories" or a website I can access? I found your post sent me searching in so many directions......puzzles, chess, how to teach part to whole math concepts, different ways to build, etc. Any advice would be appreciated.
  7. Thank you for all the advice. The "Let's Read and Find out" books are really helpful. They cover a number of useful topics! We were able to pick one up from the library the next day on Day and Night. My daughter will be getting some of the books for Christmas this year. Also, she will be getting puzzles, maps and a globe. It always works well if I can make learning fun for her. We will be trying our own version of " Map Slap" at one point. :) The "Me on the Map" book and "Where do I Live" books also look great. Thank you! I've been looking at BFSU. It is a bit daunting. I'm not sure I got the correct version ("Building Foundations of Scientific Understanding. A Science Curriculum for K-8 and older Beginning Science Leaners. 2nd Ed. Vol. 1, Grades K-2. by Nebel." It is a green book. )
  8. My DD just turned 3 has been asking a lot of questions. Why is it colder in winter? Where does the sun go? She is also very interested in the changing size of the moon. We spend a fair bit of time at the beach. She has asked why there are low and high tides. How does one explain the moon and gravity to a three year old? Can anyone recommend a book or an app that would help explain these concepts to her? It would also be nice to get a model of the sun. moon and earth that spun and tilted. I think it would help if she could touch and turn and see what happens. Perhaps a model that would allow the other planets to be added later. She also asks a lot of geography questions? Where is America, Canada, Italy etc. I've shown her maps but I don't think she understands that the different colored areas represent countries or even what is a country I've tried to explain the concept that the earth is a big round ball or planet and it is made up of countries. I don't think I explained that to her very well.... I would appreciate any advice. Thank you.
  9. Does anyone have any experience using the Jolly Phonics program? How does it compare to other phonics/ early reading programs?
  10. I'm new to the site. There are so many abbreviations. Is there a link to a list of the commonly used abbreviations? Thank you
  11. I have been trying to introduce my DD almost 3 to Mandarin. I wish I had started sooner. I would appreciate any advice you can provide. I unfortunately do not speak Mandarin. Thank you.
  12. This is my first post. I'm wanting to introduce my DD (almost 3) to math in a fun way. I am planning on buying some cuisenaire rods and let her start exploring. Based on the advice from previous posts I'm going to use the Cuisenaire Activity and Exploration Book for pre Miquon kids by Miranda Hughes and videos @ Education unboxed. Does anyone have any experience with the books sold through the Cuisenaire.co.uk? http://shop.cuisenaire.co.uk/maths-textbook-1/ There are 7 textbooks in this series. Also, workbooks http://shop.cuisenaire.co.uk/set-of-cuisenaire-workbooks-1-6/ There are some interesting videos on this site.
