  1. Thanks for the ideas. I'm not sure it's just memorizing them? I pull out the multiplication flash cards and he seems to know the majority of them quickly. But applying that to a fraction is torture. He doesn't "see" what divides into the numbers. Maybe we need to do division flashcards even more? Maybe his brain isn't flipping the operations well? He did ok with MUS last year, at the time (and now) and it seemed his biggest problem was neatness and lining up the numbers properly in long division and multiplication. That said, he didn't remember how to do long division at all this year. It's like his brain was left in 4th grade.
  2. I'm using Oak Meadow next year. :-) And even that I will follow loosely...I mostly want it for some ideas and light framework for activities. Kindy should be fun!!!! We will use Headsprout for reading alongside it, but that's it.
  3. My 5th grader somehow forgot how to do everything this year. We need some real help, or some great games to reinforce facts. He can't seem to do simple multiplication and division easily, which is in turn ruining everything with fractions. Any great apps for practice? Programs? Computer games? As it is, despite working on MM5 at the moment I'm going to have him to do TT6 instead of TT7, so he has kind of a repeat year to solidify things before moving forward. I don't want him lost like this, it is very frustrating. Especially because somehow if I pull out the flashcards for multiplication, he really seems to know most of the facts. I don't get it. He does not seem able to apply it to reducing fractions, finding common denominators, etc. ETA We started the year with MUS and LOF, moved to just LOF (where he actually was getting most things correct), then to MM5 for decimals because I already had it. He had trouble with it but made it through, and I decided to have him work on fractions again in MM5 because of a few areas I felt he could use more work. He used MUS for Gamma and Delta. Before those years we used RIghtstart, and that was truly when he thrived.
  4. Moving Beyond the Page could work too. They enough for a full year, but you can buy all the units separately, covering only the ones you care to. Each unit is meant to take 21 days.
  5. Some good suggestions here for things I forgot about! Like logic. History/lit: Sonlight E Math: TT7, I think Grammar: AG Science: ES logic earth and space Writing: ????? I may stay simple and get WWW 5 or 6...he is a reluctant writer and the workbook, formulaic style works for him. Now thinking about vocab and logic....anything computer based?
  6. DS is using it this year. We love it. He can do it almost entirely independently. Ideally, I should be doing the discussion questions with him, but we had other life going on, so we do not right now. I'm thrilled with the exposure he is getting. He can do the labs almost all by himself (basically insists, lol.) He reads the section assigned and writes a one level outline right now. This is the longest science has gotten consistently done in our house, so I call it a huge win. It's easy to pick and choose which pieces you want your child to do and which to skip (we do not do the memory work at the moment, for example.) Very happy with it!
  7. Thanks all! I guess I needed "permission" for this to be ok, lol! Just went through 4A and printed up what she should cover...hoping this moves fast enough for her. :) Some of it is review of what we just covered, so I see no reason to repeat it already. She would die lol. I always sucked at math so it's shocking how good she is at it! (OK, I didn't suck, but it was harder for me and NOT the area I was gifted in, lol)
  8. Thanks. For some reason I never considered moving her ahead more until tonight. I just looked at MM4A and it looks like she can skip the rest of 3 and move right into there. Sadly we should have done this at the start of the year! I think it will be a better fit.
  9. I'm not sure at what point you call a kid accelerated or gifted or whatever, and I'm trying to decide what I should do with my DD1. She turned 8 in Oct, and I have her doing third grade work. She uses MM3, but sometimes I feel like it is too easy for her? We skip most of the repetition, and she gets almost every single problem correct once she understands the topic. At the same time, I don't see how I could accelerate her ahead because she still needs to learn the multiplication tables, division, etc. She also shuts down if something is too hard (or too easy, lol.) Should I just push ahead as we are, skipping what is excess for her, or skip some of the basic chapters on measurements and such and just go to 4th grade? She is very artsy and creative, and I'm also considering Oak Meadow 4 for her vs Sonight D next year. Thoughts? She likes to be independent when possible and this could allow for that, I think. I like the SL is heavier on reading, but really love the incorporation of her artistic side with OM.
  10. We use logic biology and it's wonderful, so independent. My 10yo does it almost all himself, and adores the independence of it. There is more to it than we even use. We do it over 3 days. First day is the lab, which is all spelled out in his notebook for him. He starts the lab, and the writing for it, and completes the writing if it's a one day lab. The next day he reads and outlines. The last day he finishes the lab, does vocab words, and labels the sketch. (In logic stage there are no cut and paste pictures like grammar.)There is memory work also if wanted. In the teacher guide there are extra labs for those who want more too! There is also an option to study a scientist weekly and enter them and other info on a timeline. We bought the lab kit but if it hadnt been available, I would have ordered most pieces ahead of time from somewhere like home science tools. My son really enjoys the curriculum (well he hates the writing, but he hates writing...lol.) In the TM, there are discussion questions and info for teacher on the labs. The required texts are not expensive and easy to get ahold of, and some are used throughout the levels. Probably the only thing I dislike are the sketches, only because I wish there were already lines drawn to the items to be labeled, my son is a little overwhelmed without that. It's a little confusing, but really if I draw them in it solves the problem.
  11. Thanks! When I said "independent" I didn't mean I'd leave her on her own. ;) She is very independent though and doesn't like it when I "teach" lol....it's not laziness on my part. ;) Her brother does logic stage and is for the most independent with it, and she of course wants the same. There is info for making it work for both ages in my guide, but it still seemed a bit advanced with the reading? Maybe I need to go review it again. My biggest issue is I would really like to keep it for her when she is in 5th, kwim? I the meantime I forgot I had gotten this little nature notebook from American Girl on Cyber Monday for like $1.99....and it might be just right for keeping her busy and independent feeling. She is jealous of what her brother gets to do, really! Then this would be her own little project, and keep her engaged and learning without a big $$ investment from me. :) http://store.americangirl.com/agshop/html/item/id/167687/uid/139
  12. If I get her biology as well, is it going to be too young? I know it's aimed at 1-2 grades. this is where I get stuck. I don't want to run different topics if I don't have to, but at the same time, doing bio now means it gets done again in two years so I can have her do the science cycle twice.
  13. Thanks! Maybe I will just have to bite the bullet and buy grammar stage. Sigh. LOL
  14. I have a very precocious 3rd grader. She just turned 8, should be a second grader by age, but is a strong third grader. I was going to do RSO Biology with her alongside her brother doing ES Logic Bio, but it's too babyish. I tried having her do the same as her brother, but that is too advanced. Sigh. I'm happy for her to do nothing formal yet, but she wants something like he has. Ideas? I don't want to piece something together myself. Should I get grammar stage? Is there something else helpful? We'll never finish a whole curriculum at this point, but she wants something fun to do like he does.
  15. We did two a day, four days a week, and finished no problem. Some sections we could do more (like clocks) bc there was less on a page.
  16. I should add I already had him start dance mat typing. :) I'm wondering if I should consider the video game programming curriculum at HSBC right now. He loes the computer, games, snap circuits....
  17. It was a horrible fit for DS, too many problems on a page, etc. He uses MUS (he also has ADHD.) It has been great for DD so far. I do not make her do all the problems most of the time, it is a lot of work, and she doesn't like/need all the repetition. She catches on quickly, and has actually skipped whole chapters. Like any curriculum, it is going to depend on the child. :) I have two complete opposites, so I know!
  18. We started our soon Vayarin for his ADHD (fatty acid prescription supplement...holy cow, he is a new kid!!!) and our year has been freaking amazing. We are done with Sonlight read alouds AND he finishes all his work in only two hours most days!!! I do NOT want to increase his workload and punish him for doing so well (last year, school dragged on all day, and this year he is getting more work, and more subjects, done in a fraction of the time.) He loves the computer, and great as Minecraft and Roblox are, I'd like to find something else engaging and educational for him to work with. Something that won't seem like work but will keep him from being bored and still enrich his mind. Any ideas?
  19. If you price out schools in NYC, you will see that is not a crazy high price for there. Everything is pricey there!!! Preschool runs thousands of dollars a year. I'm not shocked in the least, tbh.
  20. I would just call Seton, I am sure they can help you. We did the online CAT this year through CLP, and I know if you want a composite (bc the online one doesn't give one) they will send you one by request.
  21. Or is the Reading Total the total for that section? In VA the total has to be 4th standing or above overall, which she makes. Not sure how OH does it.
  22. There isn't a total on there? Our Seton test had one at that bottom of the paper.
