  1. Their site has sample schedules. They recommend closer to two weeks per chapter, I think?
  2. We have actually been using the ipad app instead! Cheap and independent!
  3. Yeah, *I* don't care so much, but when you have a gifted overachiever....not knowing answers is stressful. :( I only do the CAT at all bc our state requires something. I certainly know how she is doing, lol! (PS, obviously her giftedness is math not LA, lol)
  4. I was obviously not clear in my first post...proof reading is super important, but I think it is very difficult for a young elementary child to accomplish. First Language Lessons did nothing for my children in the department. Nor did WWE. It's certainly not the WTM way to teach a young child. Catching errors, especially on someone else's work, is a learned skill best reserved for a later stage.
  5. Farrarwilliams--yes, that is exactly what I meant. It's not a life skill for a third grader. ;) I totally forgot they do it that way. It's why I got a workbook for DS last year to home the skill. Forgot this year for DD. Now I have the option of waiting and practicing before doing those last couple of sections or just doing it and crossing my fingers. It's just annoying.
  6. Just venting. I think proofreading someone's work is a difficult skill, especially when your grammar programs don't focus on doing so. It's a "test" skill, not a "life" skill!
  7. Montessori might be a better fit, since there are a range of ages in each classroom, usually 3-6, 6-9, etc. Even in a preschool setting, this might at least give him a little bit of academic challenge potential (and more than a public school could offer.)
  8. Thank you so much! I think this might do the trick this summer! It's not quite as fun in appearance as Key to..., but I think it is just the approach and focus he needs to work past this. I like the incremental approach it has.
  9. That is not encouraging, LOL!!! Maybe I just need to get Kumon books or something? He definitely needs more handholding and practice this summer so we can move on properly in the fall.
  10. Preferably something in such an easy, enjoyable format for a kid? DS scores high in concepts but has not advanced at all this past year in computation....he is seriously stuck, and I need to find a way to get him out! Thanks! PS I do own Math Mammoth, but I'm not sure that's going to be the program to unstick him.
  11. I think my lazy DS is qualified too. I'm going to make him actually not rush through the CAT this year...
  12. Argh, you are right. My state is not on their drop-down menu (VA.) Carnegie Mellon doesn't seem to offer a whole lot unless you go there for a residential program, but I guess it would get the test done? It's ironic that I'm probably closer to Duke than either Johns-Hopkins or CM, lol.
  13. Do you have to live on their area to do their program? I'm close enough to the NC border to probably find an EXPLORE test later.
  14. Huh. After looking at Duke's program, she already qualifies based on her CAT scores last year!
  15. Ok, so why would I want to test her? I doubt I'll be paying for the gifted classes anytime soon. :p Can I sign her up for the test without paying all the money for the talent search?
  16. Ok they do the SCAT. Do you enroll based on the grade they are *supposed* to be in? Bc by birthday she should be finishing 2nd.
  17. We fall under Johns Hopkins...the EXPLORE isn't offered anywhere here.
  18. Huh. Well that's interesting! Fits her to a T.
  19. Serious autocorrect issues above, sorry. Will edit when I'm on an actual computer lol.
  20. Honestly I could give her a quick primer about a type of problem before the test and she could Internalize and apply it immediately.
  21. Right. It also tells you what topic exactly to start next on, and links it with Khan, which is cool. He has mastered operations up to 4.7, but measurement and something else were 2 something and 3.3 (and those were the topics we jumped over by skipping the majority of 3B.) I think algebraic concepts were about 4.3. But considering she is about 1/3 done with MM4, that sounds about right doesn't it? She definitely bathe on super quick but word problems are tougher for her.
  22. I was all worried about getting her into AoPS next, now I'm not sure LOL.
  23. DD just took the ADAM-7 math assessment, and based on her results, I don't see her being some magical gifted genius at math...just a quick learner. She scored pretty much exactly where she should score based on the level of work she is doing (she is almost halfway through MM 4A, finishing 3rd grade, 8.5yo) I was all thinking we should delve into all these things...but now I think she may just catch on quickly? Doesn't that make a difference in teaching? There were a few things she tested highly in, a couple concepts, but if she hadn't been formally taught much (like measurement, bc we skipped the second half of third grade math) she didn't just figure it out.
  24. I take that back. It has changed a LOT since I first checked it out!!!!! HOW do people use it, though?
  25. I looked at Khan a while back and just saw it as a jumble of videos...what am I missing? I hear about it all the time.
