  1. I woke up starving this morning and wanted some of my kids' cinnamon toast crunch ssooooi bad. But I went with a pile of bacon and eggs and a few strawberries. I am full and the craving has passed (mostly).

DH is now in icu and honestly, whole30 is not really important to me at this point, but focusing on it is a welcome distraction. Sorry to talk about it in this thread, for some reason this feels better than putting my whole business in a new thread on the main board.

I'm sorry your husband is in ICU.  That's a lot for you to handle right now.

    Take care of yourself.

  2. I've done it twice before, too, but I've never done the reintroduction.  I don't think I have any specific food sensitivities, either, but I've decided to just do the reintroduction anyway, just in case.

Besides, there has to be some reason why my daily headaches have magically disappeared.

  3. Day 14.

I feel really, really good.  My wine and cheese plate craving passed without incident (whew!).

I made chicken wings tonight.  Baked crispy, then homeade buffalo sauce and ranch with carrots.  Seriously good to watch football with.

Ok, now the hard part......I'll be traveling all week for work.  Tuesday through Friday.  Not only does that mean every single meal out, but I'll be hanging out with my booze-swigging coworkers all week!

    Give me strength....

  4. Day 13 here, we headed out on a day trip so lunch may be tricky, but dh and I are rocking it this go round. I've been trying lots of new recipes, so that has helped with the boredom, and I've found a couple were huge hits with the kids too. I'm feeling awesome, and considering extending it for awhile maybe 60 days. The only thing holding me back is dh and I want to go on a date night to see Phantom of the Opera and my parents gave us a gift card to an upscale restaurant near the theater that we'd like to go to and it's only playing through mid-February. We may just not W30 that night and then pick right back up, I'm not sure.

This is exactly what I'm going to do.

I have a night out planned on 2/5, but I'm going to make that my first reintroduction day instead of 2/4.  I already know what I'm going to eat, because I know the restaurant I'll be going to.  So really, it's just going to be a normal reintroduction day.

Then I have an event planned on March 5.  I plan to go to that event and eat what's there, then go back to Whole 30-esque eating after.

I actually want to go as long as I can.  I feel great.  I don't want to screw it up.  I think I'll decide in advance what days/occasions i plan to eat "old style" food, and just do it, and then go back to this new way of eating most of the time.  We'll see.  I'm feeling confident today. :-)

  5. Can we talk about this coconut milk/buffalo sauce concoction? I think I need this in my life :)

    I JUST read about this!

I want to make some buffalo wings and was planning to use ghee instead of butter in the sauce (combined with Frank's).  I saw a different recipe that used coconut cream instead of ghee.

  6. So sad :(  Day 9 and we've been invited to dh's boss's house for a dinner party on Saturday.  There is *no way* I'm going to tell dh's boss's wife that I can't eat dairy, soy, sugar, etc.  Ugh.  I will eat as compliantly as humanly possible, but I don't think it will be possible to stick to Whole 30.

I have done so well so far - I guess I start again on day 1 on Sunday.   :(

Oh, yeah.  I suppose you really can't do that, and you can't fake it since it's (I'm assuming) a small group and not like a roaming cocktail party.

  7. 1.  I get what you are saying, AG - I have that same feeling.  I almost feel more clean if that makes any sense.

    2. Our friends want to go out this weekend and I am sort of dreading that.  At least I can be the designated driver, LOL.

    3. And I am contemplating making my Whole30 a Whole60.

    4. ETA:  last night's zoodles were better than expected. I spiralized them then put them in the colander with a ton of salt, left them for 20 minutes, then rinsed, dried as best I could, and sautéed them for 3 minutes in olive oil and garlic.  Next time I will sauté them a little longer to see if I can get them a little crispier.  They weren't as slimy as I thought they would be and they really just tasted like olive oil and garlic.  I can live with that.

    1. YES!  That's it!

    2. It's not that hard, honestly.  The anticipation is worse than the event.  Get some fizzy water in a rocks glass with a lime garnish, and you'll feel like a grown up and part of the party.  Looks like a gin and tonic or something.  The food part, by the time, should be pretty easy for you, too.  Have fun!

    3. Me too!  Well, sort of.  I have one event in February that I plan to participate in, but other than that I can do it.

    4. Thanks for the review! I need to try mine.

  8. Day 11:

    "Looking good, Billy Ray."

    "Feeling good, Louis."

Trading Places.  Eddie Murphy, Dan Akroyd.  Anyone? No?  Sigh.

I have a good bit of energy.  I don't want to kill people.  I feel thinner.  Lighter?  I don't know how to desribe it.  Not that I've gotten all skinny all of a sudden, but it's a good feeling, whatever it is.

    Food yesterday:

Meal 1;  Leftover spaghetti squash and leftover taco meat heated in a skillet, added some fresh spinach and hot sauce, a couple of runny eggs over the top.  YUM.

Meal 2:  This lemon garlic chicken in the instant pot.  Really good, and not at all smushy and overdone like a lot of IP meats can be, and Nom Nom Paleo's IP kale and carrots. This was delicious.  I'm making it again today.  Husband and DD13 loved it, too.

Meal 3:  No meal three.  I was out and about and had a Larabar, and I also had an apple with some Sunbutter at some point in the day.  I know we're not supposed to snack, but we have to do what we have to do.  I was busy.

I have zero idea what I'm making today, but it should probably involve brussel sprouts since I have some I need to use before they go bad.  Or broccoli, for the same reason.  I need to decide on my proteins fast so I can get some out of the freezer.

  9. I am keeping an eye on this thread, because I'm toying with doing a food challenge of some kind starting next Thursday.

I can't decide if I should do Whole 30 or try vegetarianism for a month. (I am trying to break my usual habit of turning DH's absence into an excuse to eat Ben & Jerry's by the pint, frosting and graham cracker sandwiches, peanut M&Ms by he bagful, etc.)

However, you guys are scaring me. Wanting to kill all the things doesn't sound good when you're the only adult in a house with multiple teens.

Would you recommend it for someone with no suspicion of food sensitivities who wants to lose 10-15 pounds and eat more veggies?

Maybe.    I don't have any food sensitivities that I know of, except...wait...maybe I do.  I have had daily headaches for a long, long time.  Since starring Whole 30, I haven't had one.  This is my 3rd time but my 1st time actually being strict about it, so I think there may be something to it.

As for weight loss, that isn't even the stated goal of Whole 30.  My husband has lost 10 pounds in 9 days.  i don't know if I've lost anything because I didn't weigh myself, but I'm definitely less bloated.  I also need to lose weight, but I think I will lose naturally without being "on a diet" if I eat like this for a long enough period of time to make healthy eating more of a habit.  I'm certainly eating a lot more vegetables.  But again, if weight loss is your main goal, you may just want to go low carb for bit.

YES! It's perfect for you! Don't listen to these people. They're being sissies! They're in the worst part. It will be totally different in a week. Get the book from the library. :)

Do you really think you should call a bunch of women who want to Kill All the Things a bunch of sissies!?!?  haha

Actually, my homicidal urges seem to have passed, and no deaths to report.

  10. Day 10:

I don't really love zucchini, but I like it ok when it's roasted.  People tend to overcook it, and that's when the stink and slime come in and make me gag.  I just bought a zoodle maker, so I'm going to try that but I'll wait to hear from you to see how it goes.  haha

I just made spaghetti squash for the first time ever where it came out edible, to me.  I didn't cook it as long, so it still had a bit of crunch.  Made for perfect pad thai.  I may mix the leftover with my leftover taco meat for lunch today.  I may even add some spinach and a runny egg, because I haven't had eggs in a few days and now it sounds good again.

I know we're not supposed to drink our nutrients, but I had the best juice this morning!  Spinach, kale, parslety, apple, and celery.  So delicious, so refreshing.  I'll eat something in a bit, too, but the juice was delicious, and mostly vegetables.

I feel good, but man...the Kill All the Things stage is not good for me.  I hope it passes.  I'm grumpy!

DH has lost 10 pounds.  Dudes.

  11. I got one, and I used it once.

I think I liked it, after it stopped hurting like I was settling in on a bed of hornets.

Then getting off the thing hurt even more.

I did not have any great release of tension or soreness, but I did like that warm feeling when the endorphins kicked in.  I should probably use it again, because apparently I adore self-torture.

  12. They have a lot of fans. I don't see it as a death watch but some are invested in how she is doing. I think the fans were hoping for a miracle but that doesn't seem to be happening. I think they are handling it all very well and just keeping fans up to date here and there. Maybe their getting a bit more coverage since they had a song nominated for a Grammy?

Maybe this is it, and I just haven't been seeing it from that angle because I'd never heard of them.

  13. Day 8 for me. I have definitely lost a significant amount of bloat. Starting to feel clearer headed and just have a better attitude in general. I am more patient with my children, and for that reason alone I should probably always eat like this.

That's funny, because while I share your loss of bloat (yay!) I'm feeling incredibly snippy at my husband and children.  Like they can't even breathe around me or they're doing it wrong.

    Poor people.

At least I recognize it, and have apologized, and asked for some grace.  They're all just trying to stay away from me!  It started on Saturday and continues today.  I hope I can make it go away soon.  It's really not ok.

  14. Did you find the story about Brittany Maynard (her name brings up over 1.2 million hits, btw) bizarre, too?  It seemed like people ate up that story and were waiting for her to die, as well, but she was seen as a hero of sorts so maybe it's less bizarre to some for that reason.  Although she put herself out there at least as much as this woman.

I saw that as something a bit different.  She put herself out there specifically for the purpose of calling attention to one having the ability to choose to die with dignity in certain circumstances.

The coverage seemed not so much to be waiting for her to die, but to be reporting on her appearances and lobbying efforts and the "cause" at large.

  15. I don't have anything against them.  People can share their own story, or not, in whatever way they like.

The coverage, though, is so bizarre to me.  Honestly, it's like every media outlet is sitting around waiting for her to die.  So distasteful, in my opinion.

  16. I just made brisket in the instant pot.

I don't recommend it.   If you want good brisket, go to Texas, or have my sister make it for you.

I'm aggravated.  That was a $30 piece of grass-fed beef.  Grrr.....

  17. Does anyone know about this couple?

I don't follow country music at all, so I had no idea who they were until they started documenting every minute of Joey's battle with terminal cancer.  Now, every time it seems every time I channel surf or muck around on the internet I see story after story about what are, unfortunately, her last days.

The whole thing seems so intrusive to me.  I know it's their choice to do this, but it seems as if the entire media has been on Death Watch for several months now.  I always feel like I should avert my eyes when I see yet another story.

    What do you think?

  18. Day 7.

I definitely have lost some bloat.  Not sure about weight because I didn't weigh myself before I started and haven't weighed myself now.  I need to lose, but I'm determined to focus on making better food choices overall instead of being obsessed with the scale.  If I do that after W30, with an 80/20 mentality, I'm certain I'll naturally drop weight, albeit slowly.

No breakfast today except black coffee, because I simply wasn't hungry.  I made paleo pad thai (with Melissa Joulwan's Sunshine Sauce) for lunch and it was really, really good.

Dinner:  Brisket in the instant pot, plus roasted baby yukon potatoes and zuchini

Here's a tip, or at least my experience.  I tried to do the spaghetti squash in the IP, but it just didn't really work well.  I mean, I liked the texture, as I prefer it to be a tad crisp still and not so smushy (the technical term), but not matter how long I did it it would not cook evenly.  I'd end up getting overly cooked some strands, some just right, and then some of it that never did cook.  Weird.

Energy:  I have some.  I was able to stay out last night much longer than normal, so that's a big win!

  19.

Is there anyone here who has W30 travel experience? My dh is leaving on a business trip in a week and is feeling nervous about the food while he is gone. Any tips?

I travel constantly for my job, and it really is pretty easy to stick to W30 protocol.  He'll have to be willing to be "that guy" at the restaurant, and (like pp said) make sure that the meat and veggies only have comjpliant oil, but honestly....it's not hard.  Even with hotel buffet breakfasts.  A few hard boiled eggs and some fruit and he'll be good to go.  If it's a restaurant with made to order omelette station, even better.

I second traveling with some emergency food.  I tried Epic bars, but honestly....ick.  I prefer the compliant jerky you can find at TJ or WF or whatever, and some chopped veggies, fruit, nuts.  I do like Epic bites and bits, and they help for me, particularly when I'm with a client and they order food in where I have not control.  I've gotten to where I carry single serve olive oil packets with me, and then I can always have salad with olive oil, and throw in some Epic bits and/or nuts and I'm good until I can get out of there.

ETA:  Here's a timely blog post about this very topic, in case you're interested.

  20. I could live on bar food and beer.  So I understand.  We are settling in to watch NFL playoff games and I instinctively want a drink.  I put a Perrier with lime in a fancy glass but that isn't fooling me.

ETA: is Superfood salad a new thing?  Have I been living under a rock?  Our chick fil a has "superfood salad coming soon" up on the billboard.

I don't know.  I suspect Dr. Oz has something to do with it.  haha

As for the bar?  I went, and it was fun.  I ate nothing, and threw back several drinks...of club soda and lime in a rocks glass.  It wasn't that hard because I ate a huge dinner before I went, but man....that particular bar has amazing food. It's a gastro pub.  Smoked gouda stuffed homeade tater tots?  Why, yes, please.  I mean....no.

    Sigh.
