Chain.  I did put in birthdates, but the first question was a check-box that said "I am currently eligible for a COVID vaccine."  I wonder if they made that the only restrictive field when they initially set it up so they didn't have to keep updating the criteria for different states.

Lucky you!  I can’t get him signed up anywhere yet.  I was really hoping I could schedule it tonight, but no luck.

  2. @wintermom he’s a 9 week old black Miniature Schnauzer.  He is the stinkin’ cutest thing ever.

Got in a decent walk today.  It was sunny, but only in the low 40s and windy.  I thought spring was here, but now we’re expecting frost again tonight.  I don’t know why I felt like we were in the clear; generally nothing can be planted here until around Memorial Day.  It’s supposed to rain again tomorrow.  I was hoping to take the bikes to an 8 mile paved trail near home for Mother’s Day, but I don’t have any desire to ride in cold rainy weather.

Jessica, one thing you should know is that not many liver transplant recipients were included in the Johns Hopkins study, so the data may or may not be accurate for your dad (or for my dh, who had his liver transplant five years ago.) Apparently, many experts believe that the type of transplant received may be pertinent, but there isn’t enough data to prove anything yet.

Also, there is also another big variable, which is that transplant recipients are at all different levels of immunosuppression, and at 5 and 10 years out from their transplants, the my dh and your dad may are probably on lower doses of their medications than those who recently received their transplants — and that could mean that the vaccines will work better for them (I hope!)

If I hear any new information regarding the vaccines and liver transplant patients, I will be sure to let you know!

Thank you!  I’ll go read more.  I’m pretty sure my dad is at the lowest dose of his immunosuppressant.  I have a physically disabled brother who keeps saying he thinks he’s immune so he won’t get the vaccine at this point, and my parents have to drive him to do his doc appointments and grocery shopping.  I was taking him for a while until my parents got fully vaccinated, then they went back to doing it because my younger kids can’t be vaccinated yet.  Looks like I should start taking him again, or use this info to help convince him to get the vaccines!

  4. Struggling.  My PCP fired me for not being seen in a year and I haven’t found a new doc yet.  That means I had to wean off of my  depression and anxiety med.  I took the lowest dose, but apparently I really still need them.  I tried to make an appointment with a new doc and they are fully booked until the end of July with a long cancellation list already.  Now I have to work through my anxiety to find another to call before I run out of thyroid meds.

Add to that some really cold, rainy weather keeping me from walking outside.  Yuck.  I’ve already failed at my goal to do indoor exercise when I can’t get out for my preferred walks, and it’s only the 5th the month!

DH and DS want to buy weights and I think I would enjoy that more than yoga, so maybe I should encourage the purchase.  I did weight training in high school and loved how strong it made me feel.  Yoga just makes my knees hurt.

Today I have to clean the house so I’m not embarrassed when the plumber comes to fix whatever is wrong with my half bath/laundry room plumbing.  I already introduced our Boston Terrier to my parents’ new puppy this morning, so I got some exercise keeping puppy safe from dog and dog safe from puppy teeth.  Maybe I’ll listen to dance music while I clean so I’m tempted to move even more.

The Red Cross has items mentioning that men having more antibodies from COVID recovery on average than women (6th paragraph), as well as one indicating Asian people generate more antibodies from COVID recovery on average than white people. However, I've just seen an article that says the Red Cross has stopped collecting convaelescent plasma due to a randomised trial indicating there is no benefit from this sort of plasma for treating COVID-19.

    Thank you.

  6. Ny doesn’t have free community college for all, but it does have a program that might give you an idea of how transfers can work:  SUNY to SUNY Advantage program for transfer students.

NY also has the Excelsior Scholarship Program for families with an AGI of <$125,000, which makes SUNY or CUNY college free if you meet the requirements (NY citizen for 12+ months, US citizen or eligible non-citizen, high school grad or equivalent, 12+ credits per term and 30 credits per year successively w/no break, agree to reside and work in NY for a length of time equal to your  scholarship)

  7. The weather has been a mess here and I haven’t walked as much as I wanted to.  I’m also not in the habit of indoor exercise yet, so I’ve been a bit of a slug.  That’s my goal for this month; if I can’t walk I need to at least do 30 min of yoga or belly dance.  And play with my parents new puppy!

I’m also thinking about going back to eating keto.  I have over 100 lbs to lose and counting calories isn’t working.  The scale creeps down, but reaaaally slowly.  When I went keto a couple of years ago I lost 30 lbs easily; I think my body just doesn’t like carbs no matter how many calories there are in the mix.  I prefer not having to always think about what I’m going to eat, too.  My DH and son eat primarily keto already, so it won’t be hard to get back to it.

It's tricky, because some people who have had COVID have, 4 weeks later, not enough antibodies to be distinguishable from people who never had it, while others have highly raised antibody levels. (The UK's Blood Service has had to put tests in to distinguish these, since convalescent plasma can be donated by people who still have raised antibodies for that point. It's at the point where women who weren't hospitalised with COVID aren't even allowed to apply, because they've found - anecdontally - a difference along gender lines about antibody reactivity to COVID). Presumably the people with highly raised antibodies 9+ months after infection are a subset of those for whom it was raised after 4 weeks, but it's not like one can assume one number will work for everyone who has recovered from COVID.

Interesting.  Do you have any links where I could read more?

  9. Oooh @Laura Corin that sounds yummy!

I took my 17yo and my grandparents for their second covid vaccines today, so 3 hours in the car.  There were thunderstorms when we got home and I thought I wasn’t going to get in a walk, but the weather cleared and we went to the park for a bit of tennis, a 1.5 mile walk, and a bit of time at the exercise equipment.

It's sunny weather so far this morning, and I have a walk with a friend planned. It's my 54th birthday today, and I'm celebrating a second covid birthday. It will be low key and I'll be working for most of the day. I'll be counting my many blessings for all the positive things in my life.

    Happy Birthday @wintermom

  11. I’ve homeschooled all of my kids from the beginning, so I’ve been at it for 12 years with my 17yo.  My 15yo wanted to try public school so he spent one semester in 5th grade there, otherwise homeschooled.  I also have a 9yo 3rd grader (we don’t start kindergarten until age 6) so unless she ends up in school at some point I have 9 more years of homeschooling to go!  It’s kind of exhausting to think about writing it out like that. 😛

  12. I finally did some yoga.  Yikes am I fat and out of shape.  My knees do not like having all of my weight on them.  Glad I got it done, though.  My mom said that my 9yo had done yoga with my 86yo grandmother, so I couldn’t let her outdo me. 😉
