  1. I like my meatloaf, which is an adaptation of this Cooking Light recipe for Italian Meatloaf with Fresh Basil and Provolone. I've never had another meatloaf that I would put on my menu rotation, and even this one only gets made about twice a year! Other meatloaf that I've had has been so flavorless, a bit like eating a burger without a bun. Tolerable, but not enjoyable.
  2. Thank you, all! I'm off to check out your recommendations.
  3. Does anyone have any recommendations for French music appropriate for kids? We've started to learn French together as a family and we're having so much fun with it. One of the favorite parts of our lessons is when we watch YouTube vids on the tv with surround sound on and dance around to the music. I would love to find a cd or two for when we're in the car. Some of the videos we've watched have been by Alain Le Lait, but before I buy one of his CDs I thought I would see if anyone knows of someone even better. Thanks!
  4. Our dog is trained to ring a bell. It hangs by the door and we just rang it every time we went outside. "Come on Annie, let's go outside!" jingle, jingle Eventually she figured out that ringing the bell meant going out. It didn't take very long.
  5. Ready Set Happy We used this with a group of homeschoolers and I thought it was wonderful.
  6. I haven't taken any pictures of ours because it is still blank, but I'll describe it. First I printed the ancients cover for The Well Trained Mind History Notebook from http://barefootmeandering.com/ on card stock. Then I printed card stock pages of the years encompassing ancient history. I made my own, but I think the free GuestHollow ones would work fine. Then I took scotch tape and taped them all together on the back of the pages, along the longest side. It folds up accordion-style. We can flip through it like a book, or spread it out on the floor. I got the idea from http://www.funschooling.net/2008/09/our-prehistory-timeline-year-1-weeks-3.html. I taped them together along the 11-inch side, though, and used only white card stock. We will be using this as a family timeline instead of each student having their own.
  7. Thank you for the recommendation! I looked up a sample and he does a wonderful job! I would definitely purchase a copy if my husband wasn't also wonderful at reading it. lol He has already read the entire collection through twice, though, and the boys are only eight and seven. They sometimes make up new adventures together for Pooh and friends to embark on. My husband is awesome. :D
  8. These sentences would work if you drew lines to do the copying on. That might be too much of a pain, but I thought it's throw it out there anyway. It's free. http://soundcityreading.com/tw-shortvowelbooklet-print.pdf
  9. If I read Pooh the boys barely listen. If my husband reads he does the voices and they are glued to the book. I think it's one of those books that require the skill of giving characters voices or it's just blah.
  10. My brother owns a condo on Sandbridge Beach. It is a really wonderful place, so much nicer than the Virginia Beach stretch, IMO.
  11. I participated in Science Olympiad in high school and loved it! You've already received great responses from previous posters, but I thought I would add some encouragement to "go for it" as a former team member.
  12. We use and love the Reading-Literature series by Treadwell and Free. Primer First Reader Second Reader Third Reader I believe they go up to a 6th volume. They can also be found with nicer formatting for a couple of dollars as Kindle books, which an be read on the Kindle app on the iPad.
  13. I'm glad I'm not the only one having problems. I thought I was doing something wrong when none of them would properly download. Then one worked. Then none worked again. I have only one working file, out of a dozen attempts. At least the download time is currently under an hour. Earlier I was getting estimates of up to 6 hours!
  14. Thank you for this link! I bought The Private Eye to use this school year, but I've been so busy that I haven't worked out plans for exactly how I'll use it. This blog looks like a great resource for ideas!
  15. My 7-year-old son acts like that if he has artificial dye. I highly recommend cutting all dye from her diet and seeing if it makes a difference!
  16. I don't know. Is combining MCT, WWE, and Bravewriter too much for language arts? Or MM, Beast Academy, Noble Knights of Knowledge, Living Math, and Afterwards: Folk and Fairy Tales with Mathematical Ever Afters too much for math? Or RSO, BFSU, Mr Q, and a bunch of free resources from online too much for science? Most of our other subjects are just as bad. We use most of it, though, and it works for us. My bank balance just thinks it's too much!
  17. It mellowed the sweetness of the Nutella. The yogurt was really chocolatey and there was none of the bite that plain yogurt usually has.
  18. Nobody told me to take it in the morning. No wonder I've been having such a hard time waking up in the morning, when I'm usually wide awake as soon as my eyes open! Off to take my dose.
  19. I needed something fast because the baby was ready to go down for a nap but my body was telling me I needed food first. Inspired by this Pinterest post I added a spoon of Nutella to my yogurt. Go try it.
  20. My ProClick has been my best homeschooling purchase! I was using the file folder system but having a hard time with papers everywhere. I wasn't disciplined enough to properly file everything when the kids were done. Now I bind everything into books and my house stays much tidier. Love, love, love the thing!!!
  21. If she likes Harry Potter and Percy Jackson she might be interested in the Bartimaeus series by Jonathan Stroud, or The Edge Chronicles by Paul Stewart and Chris Riddell, or the Fablehaven series by Brandon Mull.
