  1. Im thinking of using RS too and Im worried about the reply that it is difficult jumping into the middle of the program. My 9yos would be starting on C after years at public school. Is this going to be tricky?
  2. Ok, i'll start with level one and hope this is finally the answer to my prayers. Thank you for your replies!!:001_smile:
  3. I was trying to figure out where to place my 9 yos/3rd grade and the website says "Level One will form a solid foundation for future lessons" and I have a terrible speller on my hands that needs a solid foundation. In ps he has consistantly failed his weekly sp test. I dont mind starting from the beginning but my concern is the price. Is this really worth the money? Also, is it necessary to work up through all of the levels to 6, one year at a time? That seems like a lot of spelling instruction when we could eventually get to other things when he has mastered the basics. Or am I missing something?
  4. What cirriculum are you using that works? I will be bring my 9 yo son home from ps in january and am now in the planning stage. Not new to hsing. I taught my dd 5th-7th years ago but she was a VERY different type of learner.. and human being :) I am looking into Right Start Math or MUS because I like the manipulatives and games. I know RS is very teacher intensive but everything will be that way because of his personallity and learning style...so im ok with that. Any other suggestions? For history we will be doing SOTW, which I already own, with lots of supplimentation. For science, I think we will do unit studies according to his interest...he LOVES science more than any subject and is naturally very curious about the way things work, how things grow, etc...so this will be a breeze. For language arts, I have looked into FLL and WWE and if I go that route, we will probably start at the beginning with both, as this is his weak area. But Im open to other suggestions. Since this is where he needs the most help, I want to make sure Im using something compatable to his learning style that he will enjoy. Lots of reading (history, science, RA, and books of his choosing). He is not into reading. He likes browsing through books/magazines with pictures of skateboarders, bmx'ers, and motocross of all things....well, that is his "thing". But he wont really read any of it unless we do it together. He would rather be "doing" all of those things in the pictures. :auto: I want to just hit the basics to start and really focus on Reading, spelling (need advice here...his spelling is appalling) and writing skills. Am I missing anything? I own a copy of TWTM but need to find it. The entire TWTM cirriculum worked well with my dd (she loved Latin and Logic-which my son would NOT be so thrilled about doing) but I dont think it would be so suited to my son. Because he is a Kinesthetic learner and becasue he is a boy, I will have to modify a lot. Any suggestions for cirriculum, structuring of lessons, school days, tricks that worked for your K. learner, etc...really ANY ADVICE AT ALL, would be most welcome. Thank you!!

  6. My 9 year old son will be at home in January from PS and is grade level in math but gets bored easily with traditional texts and is I think a kenesthetic type learner. Both of these programs look great and I'm having trouble deciding between the two. He likes math and I want that to continue and make that and science the "fun part" of our day. He struggles with reading and spelling and we will have to focus a lot of the day of strenthening that area so I want this subject to not be so heavy and intensive...and yet I want him to be challenged enough. That being said, we are still waiting to have him tested for a possible learning disability..even though I think it may just go back to his learning style. He has stopped wanting to learn and is very fidgety and physically active, so getting him to sit still for more than a half hour will be a challange. He is currently in the 3rd in ps and had to repeat 1st grade..and still is really struggling. Thanks :)
  7. Thank you ladies so much for your responses!! So much to consider.
  8. Should we start at level one? My son is 9 and not a good writer and needs major help with every grammar related subject. After looking through them I *think* maybe starting with one is best but I wanted your thoughts before I bought anything. I would be interested to hear your experiences with WWE and how you progressed through them and with what age of child. Thanks :)
  9. Thank you so much for all of your responses!! I just had a meeting with his teacher, reading tutor and principal. They all think he has a learning disability and he will be tested by the school in the next few weeks. Personally, after reading your posts and doing some research I really think he is a kinesthetic learner. He fits the description to the T. So I think I will incorporate suggestions from a couple of websites on kinesthetic kids and really make our primary focus reading/spelling etc. I really appreciate this forum and am so excited to soon be teaching one of my children at home and participating in something that once gave me so much joy and purpose!! Thank you all again!!
  10. Hello all!!! Its so great to be back on this forum!! I home schooled my dd for three years a few years back using TWTM and she did wonderfully. Now I need to do the same for my son but under different circumstances and for different reasons. I have a 9yob and he is currently in ps and has not done well there at all. He had to repeat the 1st grade, and is now in the 3rd and still doing poorly. I have had to work and couldn’t home school him like I was able to with my dd. Now I have an opportunity to keep him at home December this year thru August and work with himh He will then start over in a different town with a much better school district a year from now. So, that being said, I am freaking because I have only months!!! (VERY excited though :) I need to get him caught back up. He doesn’t not have a learning disability but possible ADD (getting him tested this month...I am aware a lot of kids in ps these days seem to have ADD but he does daydream a lot and is very overwhelmed by crowds of kids and being put on the spot in a class setting). He will not be put on meds, but it will be nice to have my suspicions confirmed. So I want to do TWTM but since I have really only half a school year I wanted to see what you all recommended. He is good at/likes math and science...meaning he is about at grade level here. Doesn’t really like to read (unless its non-fiction relating to cars/motorcycles/skateboarding etc...but even then im pulling teeth to get him to read for more than a few minutes.) He is reading below grade level and has trouble with comprehension. His spelling is the worst of it. On a typical test he will get 2 right out of 15. He really needs a strong spelling program. He loves art and is very talented!! He is very moody and seems to get bored easily and doesn’t like school. I want to inspire him to learn and give him the tools he needs to succeed, esp. since I wont be able to be there teaching him through the rest of his school years. Any advice or favorite curriculum ideas will help. Thank you in advance!!
  11. Would you use this as a starting point for a 3rd grader? He had to repeat the 1st grade twice and is having trouble still (now in 2nd grade in public school). Math and science are a breeze but he is way behind on language arts/reading. I will be bringing him home to teach him myself either in the spring or the next school year and I want something that gives him a really strong foundation. Also, what about Susan's new writing program for elementary age? Thank You!
  12. Hi everyone!!! Im Rachel from OK and I will be teaching my 15yo dd at home this year. We have been in public schools for the past 2 years and are doing her last 2 years at home (trying to graduate a year early-which she had planned to do in public schools with her guidance counselors OK). We hs'd middle school WTM (cant tell you how much I have missed it!!!) but the thought of doing high school always scared me because its such an crucial time and I really don't want to mess anything up. I just bought the revised ed of TWTM and have a wonderful family friend who is a english professor at a local college willing to teach most of her classes, so I feel a little more confident. Just want to make sure Im getting it down on paper correctly and am not missing anything. Any general advice would be welcome!!! So, what kind of records need to be kept (how detailed) for high school? She is hoping to attend an Ivy League school. Thank you!:)
  13. Do you have to pay to take these if home schooled? How much do they generally cost? We are in OKlahoma. Thanks!
