  1. This looks great! I think I will put it on my Amazon "wish list" for Christmas!! :tongue_smilie:
  2. What do you think about just doing unit studies (dictated by child's interest) for science for 3,4,5 grades? We would do ongoing nature study in addition. Is it really necessary at this age to do something formal and textbooky? My gut feeling is to have science remain fun and interest led. He loves science and I dont want to kill his passion. Has anyone done this with success? Thanks!
  3. Thanks for the suggestion!! I looked it up on Amazon and it looks great...which is wonderful because I never seem to have enough to read ;)
  4. Im looking for a physical planner...not one online. I'm looking for a specific type of planner that can keep track of ds's schoolwork, my schoolwork (im a full-time student) and other activities. Ideally I would like a small-medium size book that, in a one day page spread, has 3-4 columns (one for ds, one for me, and one for outside activites like dr appts)....one designed maybe to keep track of the activities of a few family members? Does that make sense? Is there anything like this? Im considering making one myself but thought I would ask here first. Thanks!
  5. I've found this to be true as well with my own dc. My dd did fine in elementary and ds did horrible. I wonder why there is such a huge learning difference/ability/style/etc between boys and girls and how that affects performance in a classroom setting. Thoughts on this anyone?
  6. :iagree: wish I would have never sent my son to ps in the first few years. Its really killed his love of learning.
  7. :iagree: *I* have read/listened to them several times and so has my dd. They never get old and I always seem to find some new rabbit trail to follow afterwards!!
  8. This is wonderful! Thank you for sharing :)
  9. :bigear: 6 months seems like a lot of deschooling time to me. But maybe I am wrong. I will be following this thread because I too am pulling my son out after Christmas following 4 years of ps disasters. He hates reading, cant spell or write or really articulate his thoughts at all...even out loud. He really hates school period. All this and he did the 1st grade twice to "catch up". He never caught up and is still way behind his classmates. (no learning disability...just disinterested in learning.) Think we will be taking more of a Charlotte Mason approach but honestly, we were planning on jumping right in...now Im wondering if I need to let him have more time to decompress. Hmmm...
  10. ..so forgive my ignorance. But is the pdf version downloaded to the computer you purchase it from or is it emailed to you for download? The computer I want it on is getting repaired.
  11. I will probably go with pdf...that way we can choose to print in color if he wants. Thanks :)
  12. Which one do you prefer and why? I want to buy this today and am still not sure whether to go with the textbook or something I can print. Dont want to overwhelm my printer :tongue_smilie:but having extra worksheets ready to print anytime sounds nice...and its cheaper. I only have one kiddo so I wont need it for anyone else. Thoughts?
  13. ANY Jane Austen book. East of Eden. Jane Eyre. The Woman in White.

  15. He is actully in 3rd grade and his reading level is about at that level. I am looking for ones he can read to himself as well as more mature books that I can read to him. This list is great! Thank you! Keep 'em coming...:bigear:
  16. Im putting together a booklist to supplement SOTW 1. I have the activity guide but I will be doing this with a 10 yob and most of the suggestions were a bit young. Any must reads for Egypt and Greece especially? (we probably wont get to Rome until summer/fall so that can wait). I will be doing some as read-alouds and others for independent reading. (looking for fiction mostly, but nf ideas are welcome). Looking for your favorites :) Thanks!
  17. "The main reason is that my wife and I are not professional teachers, so I am worried that without regular assessments we won't have a way to know if what we are doing is "right" or effective. Does that make sense?" ...most of us are not professional teachers and seem to be much more effective and successful at teaching our children. There are standardized tests you can take along the way to double check but sometimes the most evident sign of success is merely that your child prefers reading a book to endless hours of video games or that your child has something meaningful and intelligent to contribute in an adult conversation about science or current events, where a kid of the same age and in ps would not understand the conversation at all or that they spend their free time learning because they love to learn. IMO, after a little while, it should be evident on its own...without testing. My best advice would be to enjoy the journey and have fun :). The best thing you can do for your children is to instill a love of learning. Best of luck to you!!
