  1. In the younger grades, I think it's just tooooo slow. We use Horizons thru 2nd grade. It's a bit advanced in it's pace(but I don't think it's as advanced as Singapore)- especially compared to Saxon:), but you can use it at a slower pace. In other words, by the time my son is in 2nd grade, we use the work book at a slower pace so that he is using it thru 3rd grade too. Then, I put them in Saxon 5/4. IT works great b/c by 5/4 Saxon is faster and more challenging to my boys. I've done this for two of my three sons and have been very happy with it. I've looked over a ton of math curriculum and I still haven't seen anything I like better for k-2 than Horizons. HTH!
  2. Not having opened this book to see it makes it very difficult to know what you are really getting and if it will actually be used! I appreciate the explanation!
  3. I"m looking at MFW for next year, and this has been mentioned in the package. I'm catering the package to our needs and not buying the entire kit. We already have a reading program and science that we are using. Plus, I already have many of the books. However, I do not have this book and I've been eyeing it lately. Is this worth the investment? In other words, is it a real benefit or will it more than likely sit on my shelf?:D If it matters, I will be teaching PL and LC also. Thanks!
  4. I've learned so much. Want to hear a funny story? I've just started my search on MFW. Never really thought too much about the curriculum before today. I've been researching everything for the hopes of a great 'new year of schooling. So, today I post on here; I read, read and read; I research MFW website; I call my friend and just about convince her to change too; and I go to my mailbox and guess what's inside?? MFW catalog! LOL! Is God telling me something??? :bigear::bigear: hahaha! Anyway, I thank you all for your wealth of information. It seems both of these programs are absolutely fabulous. It sounds like what might make one more successful is the 'teacher's' preference and teaching style. Honestly, I've very much enjoyed TOG, but I've struggled with certain issues this year with the program. I, like many of you, do not have a ton of time to prepare or read ahead in TOG. I think I just prefer a more relaxed approach. Of course, I say that not knowing how 'relaxed' MFW really is! :) However, I do feel like I'm leaning toward this curriculum for next year. I'm excited and appreciate all of your wisdom on this board!!!!
  5. I love TOG, but I know so many ppl that use MFW and love it. Anyone use both and have thoughts about their likes and dislikes about these two choices? I'm still teaching Grammar aged kids. 10, 8, and 6. Thanks!
  6. writing programs. And, honestly, I've found many of them waaaay to overwhelming. I just want something simple to get us started. Thanks for your help!
  7. I looked over this program today at a local homeschool retailer and thought I would see if anyone on here has used it and if you did, how did you like the program? I would be interested in this for my rising 3rd grader and 5th grader. Thanks!
  8. We start with Hooked on Phonics K, 1, and 2. Then, we transition to Master Readers. While in each grade level they are also using: ETC. K level would be ABC and so on. I also begin AAS to just keep reinforcing our rules and spelling. By 4th grade, my son was using SWR. It finally 'clicked' ;) and just seemed so much easier for him after acquiring more knowledge and basic understanding of sounds and rules. So, a K level reading program in our house is: HOP K (yellow) level, ETC A,B,C,1; Grade 1: HOP 1st (orange/red) level, ETC: 2,3 AND some AAS; Grade 2: HOP 2nd (green/blue) level, ETC: 3,4,5, etc... AAS; Grade 3: HOP Master REaders, ETC: 6, and up, intro from AAS to SWR. I have found that all of these work very well together. It keeps the boys from being bored with too much daily routine b/c they are moving from one method to the next. It just works well for our family! HTH!
  9. I've just looked at this and wondering if it would be a good supplemental reading program. At this age, it's good to keep him reading and doing comprehension. Any thoughts? Thanks!
  10. I just don't see a good explanation about the various books? Thanks
  11. I realize that with all curriculum you have to take into account personalities. Having never taught Science, I have no idea how they will like ANY program. :tongue_smilie: But, it looks like this is a fun, enjoyable one. So, I really appreciate everyone's opinions. I'm sure it will be great!
  12. HI, I have just heard of this science program- yesterday!:D And, I REALLY like what I've seen and read, so far. Are there any mom's out there that can give me an opinion about this program? I've never taught Science. I have a 10,8, and 6yr old. I have to admit BJU Science looks good too. And, I know many of you are huge fans of that program. I just don't know which one. I really love the 'informal' feel of NOEO. It just seems so fun! Any advice would be great!:)
  13. Have you used this program? Did you like it? Thanks! Bethany
  14. I've just started lapbooking and love it. The kids do too. So, I was thinking of doing a very cool lapbook of NC. That would be fun!!!
  15. We will do a NC unit study this summer. I learned early on to school year round. This will be the first year that we only do a 'light load' of school over summer b/c we actually had a great academic year from Sept.-May. We always seem to lose ground at different times of the year, and I end up making up for it over the summer. So, I was thinking that this year since we've done so well with our studies; I would do 'extras' over the summer. I am hoping to do Art, NC history unit study, and review of grammar/math. HTH! Bethany Advance, NC:D
