  1. Paddle to the Sea by Holling is a wonderful book that covers much of Canada. It is mostly geography but it is really neat.
  2. I am glad she is on the mend. And now you *know* that you are doing all the right things. I hope she is back to her normal self soon.
  3. It does work for brown rice. I use ours at least a couple times a week. I treat it like the crock pot for rice. I like that I can add rice, add water, plug it in and not worry about burned rice or forgetting to turn down the heat or anything. I can start the rice cooker at 5:00 and then not worry about it until people are ready to eat, at 5:30 or at 7:30. For forgetful, stressed at dinner time me, it helps.
  4. Please take her in. My daughter (then eight) dehydrated badly enough to need IV fluids last year. She said she was tired and felt icky. She went from sick to serious in a matter of 45 minutes as I watched. She lost 4 pounds in 24 hours. It was scary. The Urgent Care we went to was wonderful and very very knowledgable. Please, please take her in.
  5. I would guess they are somewhere in the 7th-9th grade level. But if you are going to give him more literary books, I would aim for a level lower than that. Xanth and X-men are not hard to read. They are funny and silly and exciting. Most of the literary books can't say that. (I'll duck while the tomatoes fly.) Good luck finding books for him
  6. The lacy look and on-and-off appearance suggest Fifth disease. You might check symptoms and see if the list fits. Good luck
  7. No But I would have tutors for classes I either don't want to teach or am not qualified to teach.
  8. Gummy worms Irish music Not having to cook dinner tonight!
  9. Could you call the police non-emergency number in their area and ask them? I don't know that they would be able to do anything directly but they might know who the right person to talk to is. The stealing and possible abuse make me think this could be criminal.
  10. Fruit Fresh apples grapes bananas Frozen bananas berries Other Applesauce Pineapple Veggies Canned Corn Frozen Peas
  11. As I remember the programs are the same up until algebra. The only difference is the cost and who you are paying. For algebra and beyond I think CTY uses a textbook and EPGY continues to use the computer based model. If you think you are starting at algebra or higher, I would suggest the Art of Problem Solving people instead. The benefit would be to validate the acceleration. There would be outside test scores and someone else's opinion of the child's level. We did not use EGPY or CTY. The cost was just too high, even with financial aid. I have heard that EGPY does better financial aid than CTY, but I don't have any first hand knowledge of that. We used aleks instead. It does not have the same degree of acceptance in the outside world, but I didn't mind. I am not trying to get into any programs I just wanted to do math.
  12. [2(a-b)] - [(a/3 + b/4) + (a/6 - 3b/4)] = distributing the 2 and the negative: 2a-2b -a/3 -b/4 -a/6 +3b/4 = Common denominator of 12: 24a/12 -24b/12 -4a/12 -3b/12 -2a/12 +9b/12 Reorder to put like terms together: 24a/12 -4a/12 -2a/12 -24b/12 -3b/12 +9b/12 Combine like terms: (24a-4a-2a)/12 + (-24b-3b+9b)/12 More combining: 18a/12 + (-18b)/12 Simplifying: 3a/2 -3b/2 More simplifying: (3a-3b)/2 Still more: (3/2)(a-b)
  13. I wouldn't. It would be 25 minutes to get there + class time (45 minutes?) + 25 minutes to get home. This is at least an hour and a half , maybe more like two hours, when the youngers need to sit and be quiet. YUCK! And you are talking about doing this multiple times a week? I think the big key is the other kids and what they are going to do while waiting. If everyone was doing karate, I might feel differently.
  14. Hi We are in the Phoenix area and I think it depends on what you are looking for what the community is like. I will say that arriving in the summer is NOT a good time. The whole area seems to shut down from May to about October because of the heat. There are no park days, no outdoor field trips, no anything that happens outside because of the heat. The rules for homeschooling are minimal. You would need to fill out one form per child ever, unless you move and then you fill it out again. No testing, no reviews, no anyone looking over your shoulder. It is very very easy. I belong to a secular home school group and it is tolerant of lots of different people and beliefs. I know there are other groups around too, but I haven't looked into them. Good luck!
  15. Trail Guide to World Geography is secular and covers cultures, sort of. Five in a Row, Volumes 1-3 are secular and cover lots of cultures, but not in an organized way. FIAR does have a Bible Supplement but it isn't in the original volumes. Good luck, it is hard to find secular at any age.
  16. Enjoy your brownies. We ate ice cream for lunch a couple of weeks ago because I really needed some. The kids thought Mommy had gone crazy but happily devoured theirs. It really did help. It is hard to be grumpy with chocolate sauce dripping from your chin. I hope the project gets better.
  17. Maybe he could try Keystone? They do accept classes from other schools. It is an online high school program. They do offer diplomas, but are not based in California. http://www.keystonehighschool.com/
  18. Shingles is only spread by skin to skin contact and not always then. You should be okay. I had shingles while pregnant with my second child. My oldest (then one and a half) spread the bug bite cream on my itches. I thought I was having a bad reaction to some spider bites. She hadn't had either the chicken pox or the vaccination for chicken pox. She still didn't get them. She did get the vaccination at her next doctor visit. I hope you feel better soon.
  19. 1. I was the only blond haired kid in my class for several years in elementary school. TRUE I grew up in downtown Los Angeles. My classmates were black. 2. I met my husband on the first day of Student Orientation at college. TRUE I later found out that he told his mom that he found the girl he wanted to marry someday. We didn't go out for another two and a half years. 3. I swam butterfly for the swim team in high school. FALSE I don't know how to swim butterfly now. And my crawl stroke is pitiful. So much for growing up in California. 4. I got married the day after I graduated from college. TRUE We wanted our friends from college to attend the wedding and figured that all the important relatives were going to attend graduation anyway. 5. I learned to make Danish kringla cookies from my great-grandmother. FALSE I wish this were true. She died when I was 7 without teaching anyone to make kringla cookies. I have the recipe but something is missing... This was cool.

  21. BS in Mechanical Engineering and part of master's degree in Math
  22. If your kids are involved in scouts or something like that, this would be an excellent time to work on whatever advancements they need for the year.
  23. These dates are from the 2001 rebate checks. There is not a schedule released for the current batch of checks.
  24. http://www.blakesmiracle.org/index.htm This is where my kids swim. Blake was a few months older than my youngest. The Swim-a-thon is March 1 this year.
