  1. I'm one of the 70 as well - twice over. First from losing over 50lbs in the first trimester due to Hyperemesis Gravidarum that was incredibly poorly treated. Secondly from a complication in delivery - turns out I'm one of the rare few who cannot take demerol and phenergen together without it causing me to lose the breathing reflex. But if they'd read my charts...they'd have known I had issues with Phenergen already. And I didn't even ASK for nausea meds in labor! All I asked for was to change postitions because my back {spinal issues} was killing me from laying flat.

I'll expand on the methyls and D thing. Vitamin D pulls the methyls off methylcobalamin. In our house, the effect is very similar to niacin, honestly. Not quite as strong, but similar. So when you're taking super high doses (25k IU??) of D as an undermethylator, that could be contributing to your not feeling well.

These things all balance. Niacin, D, and 5HTP all slurp up methyls in the body. To different degrees, but they all slurp them up.

Oh my. Taking that much D is dropping your methyl levels. I agree with Garden that you need to look at what else is impacting it not working and the levels not going up.

We use K2 btw. We're taking 200 mg in capsules. It helps my ds' sensory, makes him easier to touch. I know there are things it's supposed to do for absorption of D, but i"m just saying with my ds we can actually tell when he doesn't get it.

hmm. That makes things complicated. I need to keep the Vit. D high or I suffer from joint pain and weakness to the point of being bedridden. And it also is a huge factor in helping my mental status - when my levels get low, I'm not someone I'd want to be around. So just dropping the D, even for a while to work on the Methyls probably isn't going to work either. I'll try backing down on the dose some and see what happens - I can tell pretty quickly when the mood issues start usually.

It's intriguing that the effect is similar to Niacin. When I started the Methylfolate, the first week or so I was "warm". Amazing after having been chronically cold for most of my life. I'm still warmer than I was before, but I've gotten used to it.

haave you tried d3 with k2 added in drop form?

my od could never get her d3 to rise until she started mthf.   then it came upby itself.

I haven't tried with k2 yet. From what I understood - k2 is for clotting, right? I figured with my family history of clots and strokes that having thinner blood would be a good thing.

And I'm excited about my next set of labs. By then I'll have been on Methylfolate and Methylcycobalamin for nearly 3 months. I am very interested to see how it affects my Vit D and thyroid levels.

Also, if you have the COMT defects *and* the MTHFR defects, they're sort of contradictory. You can then be low on methyls but struggle to tolerate them. I haven't really figured it out because it's blowing my mind. It's another good reason to do the testing, because people don't know the context of their issues without that.

If anyone can elaborate on this scenario, I'd appreciate it. That's me, plus the Vit D deficiency genes mentioned upthread too {I'm ++ for multiple ones of those, which explains why even though I live in the south, am outside a ton, and never use sunscreen my vit. D level without supplementation is about 5}. I've been through the Ben Lynch website but it's so confusing tbh.

I've been taking Pink Stork brand 1mg Methylfolate for a month now, along with 1000mcg of Methylcobalamin {Nature's Bounty brand}. I can say I do feel better and the mental fog is markedly improved....but still not well. And I periodically have arm aches that seem to be tied to the methylfolate - I don't know if that means I need to go higher or lower or what exactly. I'm stuck figuring it out myself - my doctor says "just take a regular multivitamin and you'll be fine". And my insurance won't cover a ND.

  4. I'm trying to work less on academics this year and more on school habits. One of this things I've done is to {with DD's input} switch to more workbook based programs. We've found Spectrum workbooks to be a good fit for Language Arts and Science - but they don't have history! We were doing lifepac....but it's just not working. it's too much, too biased, and just not a good fit. Does anyone know of something similar to spectrum workbooks, for either US, Texas or World history? Geared towards middle school -ish?

  5. Don't forget if you get some types of assistance - you can get prime for $6 a month. I think it's SNAP, Medicaid, and maybe WIC?

It's been a god-send for us. Anything heavy - I get shipped or primenow. We stream a ton.

  6. Okay here goes. I'm making a big batch of fruit leather today in my dehydrator. I'm using a bunch of odds and ends of things - pureed strawberries, applesauce pouches, random baby food fruits, etc.

I have some blueberry pouches. Just pureed organic blueberry. But they are for made for dogs - would you use them? I don't see any reason not to per say, but something seems off about using them too. The website says "Our products are grown and processed in the same facility as our human grade products and since there are no additional ingredients, it’s also safe for human consumption."

Go right down to the bottom of the page and click "theme."

The only themes I see are "Default" aka very bright and "Well Trained Mind Default" aka still very bright, but now with more blue. I'm talking full white on black type dark theme. Something like this.

  8. I saw this earlier. I'm excited because I should have my DNA results back from GenesForGood any day now and I'll be able to check for this gene.

I also agree there are probably other causes as well. I know personally there was doubt if it was actual HG or HG like symptoms caused by an underlying thyroid issue.

  9. Shoot, someone how I missed that you wrote that WLS is out. My bad.

ETA: I might get a second opinion on the surgery because plenty of people have had bariatric surgery with thyroid problems.

I was told it was contra-indicated because I'm hyper thyoid {controlled with medication} which causes mal-absorbtion of nutrients already. WLS surgery would worsen that and potentially cause issues.

I'll double check again though. I'm so sick of trying things only for them to not work.

  10. I'm struggling here. I need to lose at minimum 100lbs for both physical and mental health reasons. My metabolism is shot {two rounds of long term near starvation due to illness, thyroid issues, etc}. Dealing with joint issues caused by a mystery illness, but also in part due to {suspected} celiac and a Vit. D deficiency. And of course add in high stress and we all know that affects weight too.

I've tried several diets over the last 2 years - and I'm still within a pound of where I started. I give up - it doesn't seem to matter if I binge on chocolate and chips or eat super healthy - my weight remains within a 15lb window!

I'm willing to try just about anything. Here's what I have tried so far:

Weight Watchers - worked well for me back in 2004, but the last 3 times I've tried it I either maintained or gained {new programs}.

    Paleo / Whole30 - I lost about 20-ish {not entirely sure it was actually the diet, tbh}

Nutrisystem - of everything I've tried over the last 2 years, this was easiest imo. I loved the ease of just grabbing my food and not having to worry about weighing or measuring or anything. I lost maybe 15lbs over a few months. But now with celiac, I can't do nutrisystem because everything contains wheat.

Calorie Counting {myfitnesspal / sparkpeople} - there's something about the numbers that just doesn't work for me. I start off tracking...and then grab the first candy in sight, and say forget it. Then rinse and repeat the next day. IF I do manage to stick to it....I usually just maintain. and I'm painfully hungry, which leads to falling off the diet etc.

Weight loss surgery - I looked into it and am not a canidate due to the thyroid causing issues.

Nutritionist - they can't figure out WHY I'm the weight I am, and never have been able to. My diet is usually healthy, I eat balanced most of the time, I get exercise....

  11. My boys have gay relatives and good family friends.  We always told them that some people fall in love with the opposite sex, some with the same sex and some with either, and these are called straight or gay/lesbian relationships.  We also talked about when they would grow up and find a man or woman they wanted to spend their lives with.  They didn't seem to find it a problem.

I explained it pretty much the same, with the additional bit of "sometimes you can have a special love for more than one person, and that's poly which is less common, but still okay."

I think dd was about 8 or 9 at the time.
