  1. How much water are you drinking? (You don't have to answer). Dehydration can cause problems. I supplement with zinc and notice a nice improvement in my skin.
  2. This is only tangentally related. I'm perimenopausal and just went through a 6 week long period from hell. I had been told years ago that I was anemic but it wasn't enough to do anything about. The doc didn't even say take any extra iron. Anyway, did some reading and discovered that since I was anemic it was causing heavier periods which made me more anemic. This cycle I could live without. So, in desperation I went to Walmart (I"m normally a vitacost girl) and grabbed some iron. It ended 4 days later. I'm still taking the iron and plan to for a while. I was surprised at how quickly it worked so I thought I'd share. Feel better soon.
  3. My 16, soon to be 17 year old daughter, who on July 4 tore her meniscus with a bucket handle type tear, which means it is locked in place, informed me two nights ago that she "ran" on the treadmill. She has surgery on Tuesday. She has been in a straight knee brace for a month, cannot bend or straighten it and was supposed to not work -- and who went back to work 1.5 weeks after the incident -- thought that "running" would be a good idea. We went to the beach for the day, 4 days after the injury, and she "walked" (with and without crutches) up and down the boardwalk (2 miles one way) several times. She and her younger sister (15) told me that every male between the ages of 18-30, who have had knee surgery (meniscus, ACL, etc.) came up and spoke to them. Apparently, being young, cute and wearing a knee brace/crutches is a great way to pick up guys. I can't wait for this surgery so she can start healing. She's already asking how much time she'll miss from work and if we can go to the beach on Wednesday. Gee, I wonder why she wants to go. She has been stubborn (strong-willed) since birth.
  4. I was tutoring and the dad usually sits with us during the sessions. This day he wasn't feeling well and went to lay down. He is diabetic and his blood sugar dropped. He told his son to call 911 (mom and other son were at a car dealership) and the 8 year old picked up the phone and made the call. I stayed until mom came home. One of the first responders was the mom of a former student at the school where I teach. They treated him and he stayed at home.
  5. I was just watching a video of Benedict Cumberbatch mispronouncing the word penguin. Too funny. . My husband pronounces ambulance as "amblamce". Drives me crazy. :)
  6. I was on the Wilson site yesterday. What about this? http://www.wilsonlanguage.com/professional-learning/individual-teacher-support/wrs-level-i-certification/
  7. We live in a somewhat rural county in Maryland and there are tons of backyard fireworks. I'm actualy surprised I haven't heard many this summer so far. They usually start by now. Laws in Maryland: The use of fireworks is illegal in Maryland, unless the fireworks are part of a public display for which the State Fire Marshal has granted a permit. You cannot have a private display of fireworks at your home. All fireworks displays, regardless of location, require the proper permits and insurance (In Baltimore City and Montgomery and Prince George's counties, consumer use of all fireworks and ground-based sparklers is prohibited. Ground-based sparklers are prohibited in Ocean City, Maryland, and Howard and Harford counties. Any hand-held or ground-based device that creates an explosion, detonation, loud noise, that launches a projectile or moves along the ground under its own power is illegal in Baltimore County and elsewhere. Examples of prohibited items include: Firecrackers, Cherry Bombs, Black Cats, M-80s, Crackling Balls and Smoke Bombs; Roman Candles and bottle rockets (whistling and/or with report); Sky Rockets, helicopter-type rockets, Spinning Wheels, Moving Tanks or other vehicles; Any firework shot from a mortar tube. j there's more but that's the gist.
  8. My husband is going through a tough time with glass coming out of his leg after sliding on a bottle 25 years ago. They couldn't remove all of it at the time because they were afraid there would be nerve damage so they left it in. Over the past 25 years, periodically glass comes out of his leg. This one is causing a lot of pain so I"m hoping that it comes through, soon.
  9. I got a call from a potential client asking for how her son can take a 2 classes over the summer so that he won't have to repeat 6th grade at his private school. I am going to suggest that he attend the private school I work at for his language arts requirement if his school will accept it. What other suggestion could I give them for 6th grade language arts? According to mom he's grade level regarding comprehension but very very weak in writing (mechanics, grammar, etc.). I'm hoping they will select my school as from what mom said I think there are some additional learning issues that he's dealing with. The other class is Social Studies. Is there a program that would be good for summer work that is more than supplemental but not too crazy with the amount of work that the family could work through over the summer? She thought about Khan Academy but I don't think that's enough for Social Studies. I suggested that she look at homeschooling programs but I know that's not on her radar. Workbook programs? Online programs? they might be open to spending some money but I'm not sure. Other ideas? Thank you so much!
  10. I did, too. When I mentioned to the docs after the fact that I was uncomfortable they said there wasn't much they could do about it. As a result, they weren't even interested in an x-ray. . Every now and again it acts up but most of the time I don't notice it.
  11. First make sure she can read the words, particularly if the contest is an oral one (i.e. spelling bee style). Next, go through the words and see what words she knows and how many meanings of each words she knows. Once you narrow them down you should have a better feel for what she needs to work on. After you narrow down the list see if you can start using the words in day to day conversation. Also, see if you can break down Greek/Latin roots to focus on meaning. .
  12. Exactly!! I watch pretty much only the profiling aspects only. I'll watch a little of the criminal stuff but only to get a feel for what kind of crminal she/he is. Lots of fast forwarding on Netflix. I'm currently watching it now (again) and I'm finding the later seasons are a little less gory than the earlier seasons. I might just be getting used to it.
  13. I started zinc a few years ago for myself and noticed a tremendous difference in my skin. I hate when I don't take it -- I have thickened skin on my elbows and ankles that disappears when I'm on zinc. I use Vitacost for all of my supplements. I did some reading on acne and zinc and put my kids (now 17, 15 and 11) on it, several days per week.(In addition, I give them vitamin D3.) As a teen I didn't have a major problem with acne but my dh did. Neither girl have a problem with it excep for mild break-out monthly. So, do they take after me or has the zinc helped. Probably a little of both.
  14. I just spoke to one of my co-workers today about it. she had it on Thursday and is very happy she had it. Her doctor brought it up and her insurance covered it so she had it done. Apparently one of my other co-workers had it done a couple of years ago. I had never heard of it but it sounds fairly common.
  15. Every time I run it is painful on my knees and ankles. I am currently "running" 2 miles per night on a min-trampoline that I picked up from Walmart. I carry 2 pound weights and over about a 2 week period I can now run over 30 minutes in a row. According to my Fitbit I'm running for over 2 miles. Every now and again, I try running on concrete and it usually hurts. I am trying to figure out if there is a benefit to my bones from the impact. In other words, if I only run on the mini tramp will that be enough for a long-term fitness program. I plan on adding martial arts work soon.
  16. I love Android and don't ever see myself switching to Iphones and no one in the house wants one -- except for my eldest dd. If she wants one after she gets a job she's welcome to it but I'm not buying her one. I really don't like how Itunes works mostly their phones are more expensive. I love my phone and my camera is better than most -- including the Iphone. I tend to be a bit of a contrarian and since apple is so popular I don't want anything to do with it. :)
  17. In my nearby smalltown we frequently park in front of the karate dojo and jaywalk across to the building. It is a very short walk. There is a nearby police department within walking distance. The other day someone saw me and my teens standing out front and let us cross. After I crossed I realized it was one of the police cars. I have no idea if jaywalking is on the books of that town but I'm still suprised that he told me to go ahead.
  18. I don't tweet very often but sometimes mine appear in the Tweets and Replies section rather than my profile. I haven't figured out why.
  19. I'm tired of finding all of the socks in my house after my girls make their sock buns.
  20. I know someone teaching my themes -- so Exploration will include the typical world exploration but also space. She ties in literature books to those same themes. Other themes are immigration and invention. I can't think of anymore right now but I'm sure Google might have some ideas.
  21. I am in my final few months of my M.S. in Reading and Literacy. Our classes are accelerated so things are moving quickly -- a little too fast. My background is that I'm a former homeschooler, current teacher at a small school (64 students) and I tutor about 5 students on the side. I have an O/G background and don't really consider myself a teacher -- more a tutor due to our small classes and how I teach. i am in the stage where i need to consider what my final project will be. It will have to include statistical data and I need a minimum of 60 participants if I am doing survey research. If I'm doing experimental, correlational, I could need upward of 90 with 30 students in each group. Here is my problem, my school is too small as the students grades range from first to eleventh with some of the classes as small as 3 students. I have a lot of reading, math and writing scores (we test each 2-3 times per year for each student) over the past bunch of years I could possibly use for something. I thought about accessing homeschoolers (maybe these forums) and doing some sort of survey or something -- but what? I need something where I can collect statistical data and do some analysis. I'm not sure that would be sufficient for M.S. level but there might be something. I could contact my son's school (5th grade) and see what I could do there. Timing might be a problem as by the time I have to do this, school might be on summer break (I will be following up with my school regarding that challenge. I am seriously stressing over this. If anyone has any ideas, websites or suggestions, I would greatly appreciate it. I've looked at a bunch and nothing is striking my fancy - I might be too stressed because nothing is looking possible. Thank you,
  22. I'm currently working on my M.S. at LSU (online) and am currently taking a research course and they are emphasizing (ok...scaring the crap out of us) what will happen if we even accidentally plagiarize. They would have a signficant problem with buying a paper. I will say that there hasn't been much asked regarding IDs and what not so I kind of feel like I could be anyone taking the class -- or hiring someone to take the class if I wanted (I don't).
  23. I have used the website for years and have never had problems with viruses or logging in (unless I was typing the wrong information :) ) . A few parents I know have contacted them about solving problems and they were very helpful so if you don't get an answer here you may want to try them directly. I hope you are able to solve the problem.
  24. Does he have problems when he reads aloud or silently or both? If both, start with oral reading and then go to silent reading. I usually take the student to the lowest level he can read and summarize the story back to me (beginning with question prompts by me). If my student complains that it is too easy I tell them I will move them to harder words once they can retell the story and answer my questions. Most don't complain though. At 8 years old, I will tell the student that reading is more than reading words on the page, they have to get information and be able to tell me about the reading passage and answer questions. Once I know the child's comprehension level, I will work on that level or below (1-2 grade levels). I start with very short passages (sentence, two sentences, or paragraph or more) and they read it out loud and have to tell me about it. I will usually ask an inference question and a vocabulary question out of that section. It shouldn't take too long to get through the entire passage because if they can only retell a small (1-2 sentence) section, I select a very short passage. Pictures/things around the room -- can they look at a picture and tell a story or describe what they see. Determine vocabulary and language needs. Describe an experience -- maybe that morning or the week-end. Can he/she describe well enough for you to understand what they did (check with parents before or after)? As the student improves (can read a longer section -- paragraph+) will expand at the same reading level and work on other topics (non-fiction) to expand background knowledge. I use Readworks.org for leveled passages on a variety of level. The Article A Day program can be useful. Once the student has the idea orally, I will have them practice silent reading. Read a sentence or two silently and have them tell me about it. Ask inference questions and vocab questions. Again, build experience at same reading level but use a variety of topics for the student to improve background knowledge. Silent reading lags behind oral reading so if you have to go very low, that is okay. I also like Visualizing and Verbalizing but I think it is kind of expensive. It teaches you how to ask questions in a sensory way (What did the character smell as they walked down the street? what the the clown see out of the window? ) That is simplistic but that kind of talk can help the kids connect in a deeper way. If I think of anything else I will add. Feel free to ask questions.
  25. I'm a tutor. The word tutoring frequently gets changed to torturing. For some students it may be true.
