  1. Ok, I know it's early, but since I've been getting info in the mail on Cinci and Greenville, I started thinking about conventions next year. But if I search out Memphis, it's not listed with GHC for next year. Does anyone know if this means that is isn't happening or just that it hasn't been scheduled yet?
  2. :bigear: Just trying to keep this current. I'd love to see what other insights there are.
  3. I'm resurrecting this thread because DS still struggles with impulse control and focusing, to the point where his co-op teacher mentioned talking to the doctor and seeing if there was a low-dose something - even an herbal supplement - that might help him focus. Is there anyone else here who uses herbal supplements/Omega 3s to help their child focus and stay calm? Any suggestions on what or where to go to find something? As an aside, the DH and I are also considering the Feingold Diet, so if anyone has anything to add there, I'd love to hear it. Thanks!
  4. I have a feeling there might be a few tears. I read a synopsis on Wikipedia and I seem to remember the movie being sad, too. I may have to think on this.
  5. Yes, I know this is a classic, and I think I read a segment from it in a reading text in grade school, but I don't remember it. I pulled it from the SOTW4 reading list for my dd (age 10, 5th grade) but I can't remember if it would be ok for her. She's a very skilled reader and has tackled lots of big books, so I'm sure she could read it well, but I wonder about the content. She has a tender heart and hasn't read Old Yeller, Where the Red Fern Grows (although this might be the year for it), and couldn't finish Call of the Wild (because of the animal abuse). Would she be ready/able to handle the Yearling? Is there any "adult-ish" content I need to worry about? Thanks!
  6. Im going to be using DITHOR this fall (for 5th) and my dd is pretty advanced with her reading and language arts. I haven't used DITHOR before and I looked at the samples online of the 4/5 and the 6/7/8. Based on the samples, I wanted the 6/7/8 to challenge her, but now I'm wondering if maybe I should go back to the 4/5 and stay with the grade level. Does anyone with experience with this program have any thoughts? She's participating in a co-op, but as of now, she's the only 5th grader in her 4th/5th class. I want to challenge her, but not frustrate her, kwim? Thanks! Shannon
  7. :iagree: This is what I have on my old first edition of the iPad - and it's not to protect it from the kids, but to protect it from me :tongue_smilie: Putting the screen protecter film thingy was a real PTIA for me, and if you aren't careful, you'll end up with a little bit of lint stuck underneath, but I have learned to live with it. If I had it to do over again, I probably would have left it off, but my kids - who do love to play games on it - are older and are less likely to scratch the screen with anything. Again, it would probably be me who would damage it, but then I'm clumsy that way.
  8. "Homestead survival" is a good one. Sorry, can't link here, I'm on a mobile device, but I have them on my FB page and they have lots of good things posted. Frugalissa.com is a local girl, so a lot of her tips are for this area, but she has other things there, too. Have you see the "100 days of real food"? Again, I don't have the link, but I'm sure it'll come up in a google search. I also follow her on FB. She has lots of great food ideas.
  9. I am no good at picking out sheets that won't pill. I've only had one successful purchase, and that set of sheets is so old it's starting to tear holes at the seam. What's the best kind of sheet to buy, that is reasonably priced, that won't pill? Do I need to worry about what kind of cotton? Thread count? Name brand? I think my one good set of sheets came from Target and might have been Egyptian cotton, but I don't remember anything else for sure. Thanks!
  10. I love all the suggestions, but if it were me, I might also say/text something along the lines of "DH must not have been clear the other day. We wanted you to come over sometime to do an estimate. Tonight is for family. If you have any questions, call DH." Honestly, I'd be peeved that DH caused the problem and then refused to clarify, so I'd very sweetly dump it back in his lap. Maybe even toss in a "bless your heart" or something.
  11. If you're going to do new surfaces, yes, you have to replace all the surfaces in the kitchen - the table top, the island top - not just what's on top of the cabinets. We recently updated the kitchen in our old house the "cheap" way by painting the cabinets and replacing the counters with granite-looking laminate. That made a HUGE difference, along with an updated vinyl floor made to look like ceramic tile. The change was amazing and I truly believe it's what helped sell our house. Wait, I just realized I may not have understood what you mean by your kitchen being all laminate. Are the cabinets fronts/sides laminate, too? Maybe you could paint over them instead of replace them. It's time consuming, but a nice, clean coat of paint makes a big difference.
  12. Oh.my.goodness. I knew in my head that kilts were hot, but I had never been to the Highland Games before. There were just too many for me to get pictures of, really. Here are a few, and I have a few more for a separate post. Enjoy!:D
  13. Whew! It was hot there today, in more ways than one! Pics to come soon.:D
  14. ...in a while, I thought I'd mention the Highland Games are this weekend in a nearby town. :D. I'm thinking I might have to take the kids. And a camera :D
  15. abbeyej, Thanks for the info! Do you have recommendations on one or two to start with?
  16. Pay off the rest of our dept. Travel. Donate to our church. Share with my parents. Invest so that our children and their children (etc) will be well cared for. Oh, and what the pp said about hiring a organizer. Definitely that.
  17. Oh, I forgot to mention - have any of you seen "Doomsday Preppers"? We've watched it a few times and while some of those folks seem quite loony, we've been able to get some good ideas for storage and such.
  18. :iagree:;) We are what I would call light preppers. I have an overstock of food, a freezer full of meat - and a generator that we wired to run the whole house - and dh handles some "security" prepping. Our new house has a wood stove and we have plenty of wood for it, with plenty more to harvest (we live on a very wooded lot with a few downed trees that we're working on making into firewood). We have a serious gap in water storage, though. :glare: When I lived in hurricane country, I learned the value of being prepared. And when we lived in a neighborhood that lost power multiple times a winter, we learned the value of a generator. In fact, everyone on our street had one.
  19. At what age would be a good time to start Sherlock Holmes? I'm considering audiobooks for summer travel and have a 6 and 9 year old.
  20. :grouphug: my son is like this, too, only he'll take it further and act out in anger towards whoever is winning. It's so hard to know what to do, and I still don't. I hope you (we) get some good tips here!
