  1. I just saw this today on twitter! Hysterical!
  2. I'm planning on teaching my 2nd and 6th together in some subjects, too. The subjects will be history, science, and literature analysis, and probably latin (the 2nd grader will listen in on the cds but the 6th will do the work pages). The grammar, math, writing they'll probably do separately. I'm thinking if I don't combine subjects, we'll be doing school past dinner time and that's no fun. But as a pp said, I'll expect different levels of work out of them.
  3. I read an article the other day that the body count on the final episode was going to be something like 24 people, or maybe 27? I hope they weren't serious because that would be EVERYONE in the entire show!
  4. I like the idea of saving the front cover, etc. I usually keep tests in a separate folder, anyway. I really just need better organization skills. Thanks!
  5. throwing out old workbooks!! I'm using spring break to clean and clear out the school room a bit and get organized (yeah, right!) and I don't know what to do with old workbooks. Are they worth hanging on to? Mind you, this is for a rising 2nd grader and 6th grader, not a high schooler who is supposed to be keeping a portfolio of work. I'm just a pack rat.
  6. I have the TM, but I only use it to grade and if there's an area where she seems to be needing more practice, I'd copy that particular worksheet. I don't use it for the lesson planning. Maybe I should... ETA: this is for the 5th grader. I don't have one for the 1st grader.
  7. Ok, so I think I'll hang on to LoF and use it as a supplement to answer those "when will I ever use this math in real life" type questions. As for sticking with Horizons, my thinking was that since I'll have to go with something different for high school, go ahead and make the switch in 6th grade and carry on from there. If I stayed with Horizons for 6th-Algebra I, what would you suggest for high school?
  8. I'm not sure about those specific two books, but I can say that in the 1st level, there is a difference in the "U.S. edition" and the non-U.S edition. There were several topics that weren't included in the US edition and I had to copy those chapters from someone else's book. Topics included Place in Line, Weight, Length, Shapes. If there's way to check out the table of contents of the two books to compare the topics, that might be a good idea.
  9. In 4th grade, I switched over to Horizons from CLE for my dd, and it's been a good switch. My son has started with Horizon's K and he's in 1 now. I like Horizons and their spiral approach. There's always review of previous concepts. I do feel that it is weak in the word problem area, and there are no "mastery drills" for those initial basic math facts. Children in our co-op - in my dd's 4th/5th grade class - that have grown up in the co-op starting in K did not have mastery of the simple math facts. They spent the first month or so of this year reviewing flash cards because they were still doing multiplication counting on their fingers. With my son (he'll be home next fall and not in the co-op except for one enrichment day), I plan on continuing with separate timed drills of simple math facts to get those memorized, and a separate word problem workbook. We use Singapore's challenging word problems for that. For my dd, I'll be using Life of Fred to supplement word problems. All that being said, I think I liked CLE better because it had the drills in the back that my daughter and I used, as well as a few more word problems - but she began to hate it because it wasn't colorful enough, and we were switching to a co-op that used Horizons. I've considered going back to CLE, but I don't really want to be switching back and forth every couple of years. Of course, I've also considered switching to MUS and Saxon (I even started another thread on that) because Horizons doesn't go into high school. I was thinking starting something new in middle school that would carry on to high school might be the right thing to do - but that's a whole other thread and not what you were asking about. Sorry to get off course!
  10. Well, I've been looking around at different math curricula for the start of 6th grade and I'm looking for feedback from the hive. I've purchased used Life of Fred fractions and decimals/percents but now I'm reconsidering something else like Saxon or Math U See. As much as I've disliked Saxon for my kids when they were younger, I'm starting to think it might be the better choice for my DD. Anyone have any thoughts? We started in 2nd grade with CLE, switched to Horizons for 4th and 5th (because of a co-op she was attending, but it was an easy switch for her).
  11. Did you go to the workshop they held? My friend went and was impressed enough she bought the curr. Her thought was that it would be great for her hands-on boy. She tried explaining it to me, tho, and I couldn't quite grasp it.
  12. We're currently using WWE/WWS but dd's co-op will be instituting the IEW curr. starting in Feb. If your thread is still active then, I'll be happy to post my thoughts :)
  13. I'd love to subscribe/bookmark this, but I'm not so familiar with this new forum layout. Can someone tell me how to "save" it? Thanks!!
  14. Where is a good place to stay for this convention? A friend and I went to the Cinci one a couple of years ago and were able to stay at a hotel within walking distance (it was actually attached with a catwalk) but from the Greenville map views, it doesn't look like there's one close enough to the center to walk. Any suggestions? If we end up somewhere that we have to drive from, how's the parking at the center? Any advice is appreciated. Thanks!
  15. moved to a different forum :)
  16. I'm planning on attending this year, too. I went to Cinci two years ago and had a great time. Greenville is a little closer, so we're heading that way this year. I'm hoping for limited kerfluffle ;) while there.
  17. I need to start planning with middle school/6th grade looming ahead, and I have a few ideas, but I'm really not sure what I'm going to do. I'm planning on going to the Greenville, SC, convention to help make decisions. My rising 2nd grader I've pretty much decided on, so he's good. :)
  18. :bigear: I'd love to see what others have to say, too. We're in Horizons 5 this year and I'd like to change over to something for the upper grades starting next year, too. I was thinking either Saxon or maybe Singapore.
  19. Gonna stir the pot a little bit here. I have family that live literally just over the mountain from Penn State and there is apparently so much more information that goes higher than just the university. What the general public around the country know just skims the surface of what actually happened with the cover-up. It was said, by several different family members, that even the governor of PA was on the board of trustees during the time and was made aware of it back then, but he's keeping quiet about it now. The DA disappeared and tossed his laptop in a creek somewhere - which was recovered and the police will soon have the technology to recover the information on it. (This I also read about in an article, so it's not just family heresay). Some of my cousins said that JP was an egocentric, power hungry jerk (his wife, too), and should have done more, but that since he died, he's become more of a scapegoat. However, all that to say they (my family) are very upset about the sanctions from NCAA. The current students of Penn St had nothing to do with the scandal and shouldn't be punished. The towns/townships around State College are already recessed communities and survive economically with the tourism generated by the games. If people don't attend the games, these areas don't get supported. It's not just the university that is effected by these sanctions - it's entire communities. Now, having said all that - I hope they bury Sandusky under the jail. He's a creep, a monster, and something should have been done about him a long time ago. I believe it's the people who were involved (and I'm sure there are more than just JP) who should be punished, not the current students. But I have a feeling, from the articles I read while visiting PA this summer, and from talking to cousins, that it's gotten quite political and it'll only get bigger. To the OP: I can understand your frustration with overhearing that, but I agree with the other posters - I wouldn't base your decision on the overnight trip on a single overheard conversation. You said the other mom seemed like a really nice person, so why would a single disagreeing opinion change that? In light of the current political season, I wouldn't have very many friends if I let one differing opinion dictate with whom I was friends, or the activities in which my children participated. As for your question about the general society and JP - from what I've heard both in PA and at home, it's the current student body of Penn State who got a raw deal, not the coach. (Edited because I can't proofread first thing in the morning :P)
  20. My dad taught in NC for years and years. First in a "regular" high school, then in an "alternative" high school, before quitting. He said the same things before quitting and this was 20 years ago. He did eventually go back to teaching at a community college, but he retired this past year, again, saying the same things about the administration not letting the teachers teach. It's sad, really. I grew up in the NC public school system and I think it worked much better then than it does now.
  21. :iagree: This! The lack of authenticity makes me crazy. I mean Falling Skies was more plausible to watch, and they have aliens. :D yep :lol:Definitely!! LOVE The Walking Dead!! True
