  1. I thought I'd bring back this thread, but with a spin. We're getting ready for swim team this summer and hats just aren't an option for my redhead dd. does anyone have a favorite sunblock that won't wear off? What I put on her body tends to stay on for the time we practice (and I'll reapply if it's a long day at the pool) but whatever I put on her face seems to last all of 5 minutes. Any favorite brands out there? TIA Shannon
  2. Ha! No worries on your vote :). Thanks y'all! Now I know I need to go get a smaller one, around 3 qts. The point that several made about a bigger one burning the food is what sealed it for me. I already almost burned taco chicken the other night because there was barely enough to fill the bottom of the pot. Well, that and the chocolate cake recipe :D
  3. I'm going to try and add a poll to this, but since I've never done this before....I'm not sure I'll get it right - Hey, look! It worked! Here's my reason for the poll. I'm trying to justify the purchase of a smaller crockpot. DH asks why should we get another one and I'm thinking it'll be easier to use for just me and the kids while dh is gone on deployment. Plus, I saw a really yummy chocolate fudge cake recipe that calls for a 3 qt crockpot (ours is either 6 or 7 qts) :tongue_smilie::D.
  4.:lol::lol: I'm going to have to repin that one! :D
  5. I voted every other week because there are some things I try and do weekly (vacuum) but other things, like scrub toilets, tubs and showers or dusting, I do about every other week. Things like laundry and mopping the floor are done as needed (which is usually about every 7-10 days); dishes, kitchen counters, etc, are done every day. If I have a particularly busy week, things get postponed to the next week, or the next day that I have time. Don't feel guilty about letting it wait. Of course, this stuff isn't what I consider "deep" cleaning. Windows, baseboards, ceiling fans, all that happens about once every six months or so.
  6. I was an art major in college, and my initial track was commercial art. I hated it. It wasn't my style of creativity. I do remember it being difficult, at the time, for my friends who continued on in that track to find work once they graduated. It was a very competitive field to get into, and this was with a four year degree. Of course, this was also 20 years ago and I'm sure things have changed quite a bit. I think I would suggest maybe majoring in something more technical, like a computer based design/graphic art and minor in commercial art. Back when I was in school, we did everything "old school" by hand and just had one or two individual classes using the computer. I think now, learning how to do all that stuff digitally is the best way to go about doing it, and there might be a wider career base to break in to. I would also recommend finding and talking to people currently working in the field as graphic designers/commercial artists and see what they have to say. You might even stumble upon an internship deal that would be great for exposure.
  7. Hey, OP, I've BTDT, got the t-shirt with my hubby. We still go round and round sometimes, but I still do what I can to finish by dinner what needs doing - even if it's dinner of the next day :D Love this!:lol::lol: so true!
  8. The CBS link in a pp has the full list. I'm on my phone so I can't easily link it.
  9. When I googled it, the daily mail was the first article on the list. There were several other articles from other news sources, too. Enough to make me think it's true, which is sad.
  10. I heard about this on Glenn Beck this morning about NY schools banning certain words like "dinosaur" and "birthday" on tests. *cough*homeschool*cough* http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2120870/Political-correctness-run-amok-New-York-City-schools-ban-terms-like-dinosaur-Halloween-tests.html?ito=feeds-newsxml
  11. I agree with all the other tips, but I thought I'd touch on the couponing bit. I've BTDT with couponing. I used to buy bottles of dressing, for example, for $.15 each, and then they would sit in the cabinet until well past the expiration date. Not only is it wasting my money, but it's also wasting food. Here are some things you can point out. She can still extreme coupon her household items and toiletries. That alone is a *huge* expense saver. She can still buy the boxed food, but donate it to a local food bank. She gets the satisfaction of a really great deal, and helping others, too. There are some occasions where you'll find healthy food coupons. Yoplait, for example, is starting to make some of their yogurt without the HFCS, and they always have coupons. Dreamfields pasta has really good WW pasta and they have coupons about every quarter. There's also Green Giant and/or Birdseye frozen food coupons, and Cascadian Farms will have them, too. They healthy coupons are out there, you just have to look for them. Also, our local grocery (Kroger) will send me coupons customized to my shopping habits. I've gotten some that will give me $2 off a $10 fresh produce purchase. Purchasing fresh fruit vs. canned is actually cheaper when you consider the cost per serving, especially if you shop seasonally. Not eating healthy because of coupons is, IMeversoHO, a lame excuse. I met a lady who was also like this with the autoimmune dx and she made the radical food change to even include baking all her own bread, even grinding her grain, first. According to her, it took some time, but by changing her diet, all her ai symptoms disappeared and she's now just as energetic and healthy as ever (she hs's four, teaches bread baking classes, sells her bread at farmers markets, and heads a local Classical Coversations). Yeah, she's my hero :tongue_smilie: I hope your friend hears and receives what she needs to, to get herself and her family healthy. It can't be easy for you to just observe, but it may be that she has to do this her way, and get the "doctor's note", so to speak, to change her habits. I think you being there for her is awesome, and I'm sure she will benefit from you.
  12. Here's another website you could go to. It has reviews of lenses, cameras, and a forum with lots of debate over which camera/lens is better than another. http://Www.dpreview.com
  13. I've never heard of these, either! We have two dogs that when they're outside are really good at barking and being intimidating, but when they are inside with us, they're not so on-alert. I think I may have to look into this. Any brand suggestions?
  14. I missed that! I was totally caught up in the "what the...?!" moment that I only noticed the arms were missing. Can't wait for the next season!
  15. Thanks, y'all! She's really enjoyed science (when we get to it :tongue_smilie:) and the layout of the elemental science has been great for us. It's something that she completes in a single day, not two or four, like the lesson plans lay out for us, and she loves the experiments. But maybe keeping the formal science to the 3 days is a good thing. I could always work in unit studies and such periodically, if I chose to add more.
  16. I don't know (and I'm not sure I want the spoiler :tongue_smilie:) but their arms had been cut off. I figured that might have something to do with it. I love this series! But our recording of the show stopped before the credits ~ what's the jail? Was this something they just showed a little of at the very end?
  17.:lol: We call that "chasing butterflies" around here! I don't really have much to offer because I struggle, too, but I will definitely keep tracking this thread for ideas.
  18. I was wondering if anyone had any advice for me concerning 5th grade science. I'm currently using elemental science chemistry and really like the layout, so my thought is to stick with that program. Here's the catch: dd will be in a 2 day/week co-op who will be using Purposeful Design for science and her 1 day/week enrichment will be using Apologia's Astronomy. Her enrichment never really bleeds over into work we do at home. It's truly an enrichment kind of day, however I'm not too keen on the textbook plan for purposeful design. i'm also unsure how much of the co-op science will have to be done during the at-home days. Would you even consider adding another science or just let these two be it? Thanks!!
  19. My apologies up front for hijacking the thread, but I'm really curious how you live without a fridge? Do you not have perishables like meat and dairy? I can't imagine not having one.
  20. Yes, this happens to me all the time, but usually it's after a few weeks and not a few days. If I remember right, my eye doc said it's a buildup of proteins on the lens. For me, it signals that it's time to throw out the old and get new contacts. Talk with your doc about it. He may recommend a cleaner, different lenses, or something along those lines. Sometimes cleaning helps, but if the buildup is too much, then there's not much to do about it other than change the lenses. At least that's been my experience.
