  1. I like Bible Road Trip. I think the first 2 or 3 weeks are available as a free sample.
  2. I'd like to have DD begin doing 4 problems each day, consisting of 1 each of: - addition (3- or 4-digit numbers) - subtraction (3- or 4-digit numbers) - multiplication (a 3- or 4-digit number multiplied by a 1-digit number) - and eventually long division (a 1-digit divisor with a 3- or 4-digit dividend) I realize I could make my own, but I wanted to see if anyone has already found something useful like this. We do regular fact practice for multiplication and division, but I think she'd benefit from consistent practice in the process for longer problems.
  3. I'm interested to hear how others have done without it. We use Prime quite a bit for videos, music, Subscribe and Save, Whole Foods discounts, and shipping smaller orders. However, out of my last 10 orders with 2-day shipping, at least 3 of them have been delayed. And at first I was annoyed because they were things I was counting on arriving the day Amazon said they would arrive. I did some Googling because that seemed like a significant uptick in delivery delays, and I came across this article https://www.businessinsider.com/amazon-delivery-drivers-reveal-claims-of-disturbing-work-conditions-2018-8 and that's been rolling around in my head. I've realized how impatient I've become in expecting things to arrive so quickly, and is it really necessary? Doing away with Prime would require a bit more forethought and effort on my part, but I'm not sure that's a bad thing
  4. I have the exact same issues, so i haven't done a subscription box. An alternative though is a beauty box from Target (if you're interested in skincare or haircare products). I usually can't find them in store, but they are avaliable online. They're only $7 and usually include a $x off a $y beauty purchase (something easily reached at Target). Plus the contents of the box are listed. There seems to be a new one every couple of months.
  5. For a base layer, silk long underwear - look for a top with a v-neck I've had good ones from both LL Bean and Cabela's, and I'm sure there are other good brands.
  6. What a sad, difficult position you were both in. I'm having a hard time coming up with a scenario where a sincere apology would be out of place. I think if you wanted to send her an apology, I would make sure there really weren't any expectations that went along with it, either communicated or not. It sounds like there's a chance that she could receive it well, but she may also be uninterested in resuming the friendship. Also, I understand that seeing your former friend with this other person was really the trigger for this, but if you wanted to reach out to your friend, I'd try to separate it as a totally different issue, and just not worth getting into, unless y'all really did repair the friendship.
  7. I love the Beyonce chicken story! This one always cracks me up https://hyperboleandahalf.blogspot.com/2010/09/party.html
  8. There's more information at the bottom of this post, but my question is, if you had about 9 months to get a 7- or 8-year-old kid ready for the following standards, what would you do? This kid is neurotypical as far as I can tell and has finished FLL1, FLL2, and WWE1, doing fine in each of those. I really would love to find a curriculum to walk me through this. - Given a genre, purpose, and audience, use a pre-writing strategy to plan a first draft. - Generate a main idea to support a multiple paragraph text, using a variety of sentence types. Support the topic sentences within each paragraph with facts and details. Categorize, organize, and sequence supporting details into a text with a clear beginning, middle, and end. - Revise and edit draft with input from others (adults and peers) to strengthen writing. - Write opinion pieces on topics or texts, supporting a point of view with reasons. - Write explanatory texts to examine and convey information clearly. - Write narratives and poems that develop real or imagined events using effective technique and descriptive details. - Demonstrate command of standard English grammar, capitalization, punctuation, and spelling when writing. - Write in ways that help readers read with expression, reading some parts quickly, some slowly, some parts in one sort of voices, and others in another. More information: It is looking likely that DD7 will be going to public school next year, for reasons that are just too raw, emotional, and long-running to get into here. We live in a good district and are assigned to a good school. A private school or hybrid or any other kind is really not an option at the moment. I haven't seen/heard anything about this school or anything in my kiddo to make it seem like this is a terrible idea, with the exception of writing. When we started homeschooling, I did quite a bit of research into classical education and Common Core standards. I don't think our state is officially Common Core anymore, but the math and ELA standards are still very Common Core-ish. I don't mind the idea of Common Core, and I think DD is going to be significantly ahead in math (she'll likely be in third grade at the ps, and we will probably have finished SM Standards 3B, and at least part of Beast Academy 2). I do have a philosophical disagreement with Common Core's writing standards. I just don't think that much content production is developmentally appropriate. Some kids do it naturally, but not all, and especially not mine. I think if we were to stick to classical education, she'd end up in a great point, but we are currently not aligned with the public school in writing expectations. We've finished FLL1, FLL2, and WWE1. We are progressing through FLL3, and I was planning on starting her on WWE2 in the spring. I've seen these programs build skills and progress in her. But I know they are not preparing her for the expectations above. If we end up putting her in school, I want to feel like I've done what I can to help prepare her and help her be successful.
  9. The A Bra That Fits reddit (https://www.reddit.com/r/ABraThatFits/) has *extensive* information on finding ... a bra that fits. Before that site I had never really considered the great variety of bOOks and bOOkshelves.
  10. When our church group meets, we have 8 families, which includes 14 kids under the age of 8. So our set-up has been targeted to handle SO. MANY. littles. We hire a couple of babysitters, to watch the kids in another room (lots of space, toys, and usually a show on). We have the kids who are kindergarten-age and up join us at the beginning for about 10 to 15 minutes. In that time we do a catechism question; we're using The New City catechism. We talk about the question and the verse. Then we pray. After that we send the kids back to the play room with the babysitters and the adults do more study or praying. As for leading, I've also found that it works best for one or two people to take the lead, but to definitely delegate. Find out where people in your group are gifted and see if there is some way for them to use that gift in your group. In the past we've also used studies from Right Now Media, and that helps lighten the teaching burden.
  11. What are the other appliances like? I think if a new dishwasher would be the outlier among older appliances, than it wouldn't be worth the risk to replace it. However, if the other appliances are updated and the old dishwasher is the outlier, than I'd lean towards trying to replace it.
  12. Yeah, that's what I didn't do. The problem didn't even occur to me until I saw all the suds in the washing machine. Fortunately, I didn't kill the machine. But I did have to pull all the soaking wet, thoroughly soapy towels out of the washing machine and put them into buckets. Then wash them one at time, throwing in whatever laundry I could find. And I think it took a few extra rinses for each load to get all of the soap out. It was like the mess that wouldn't quit. But for one glorious moment in time, *every* washable textile in my house was clean.

  14. Don't throw a bunch of towels used to clean it up into a high efficiency washing machine. Ask me how I know.
  15. Can someone please show me in the parenting handbook... Wait a minute, can someone please show me the parenting handbook???
  16. My family took a trip to Moab about 20 years ago. I think I was in high school, so I don't have a lot of helpful details. I remember that we combined Moab with Mesa Verde/Durango, Colorado, which are not that far and would definitely increase the things-to-do list. We were driving from Texas; we may have hit some underground caverns in New Mexico on our way there, and maybe another Colorado place on the return trip. However, I think Moab and Durango were our primary destinations.

Those are good ideas, and that's a good point.
  18. In the kid-friendly US or world map category (so lager area than a road map), check out Scrunch Map. I find them very easy to store and sturdy for my little people.
  19. And if the records implicate the organizations, then what? Or does opening the records fulfill their duty to do the right thing?
  20. Who decides what the right thing is? I found the article absolutely heart-wrenching. I'm trying to remember that there was less understanding of childhood development and very different perspectives on children and discipline and such. But I just cannot see how acts like those described in the article could be justified in light of the Bible. Also, I don't generally consider BuzzFeed to be a serious news source.
  21. I ran across this device today http://flatev.com/ It's like a Keurig for flat(ish) baked things, including tortillas. Pop in dough "pod" and voila la! Sadly it looks like it's not available yet. More sadly, it seems kind of (very?) ridiculous.
  22. The statement from his daughter, especially the quote at the end, has me in tears. https://twitter.com/MeghanMcCain/status/1033514757544767488
