  1. Just wondering if anyone has used this or looked over it enough to have a review yet? I'm considering it for my dd next year (8th grade). She is not "mathy" at all. I will probably be using this or TT. She is using CLE Lightunits this year to catch up in order to be ready for PreAlgebra next year. Thoughts?
  2. Yes, if it is just regular (aka "hard") wheat they are going to be too tough. I grind my own wheat and use soft white for pancakes/cookies/etc. and hard white for bread. Sometimes (often) I am lazy and use a combo of 1/2 and 1/2 for everything and that works out too. If you want to keep using the flour you have, try 1/2 white and 1/2 wheat. HTH!
  3. I was going to say this too. Also I really enjoyed Boundaries with Kids.
  4. We pay $40/month for Cricket wireless (all that's available out here, other than HughesNet and I've heard bad things about them). It seems pretty fast to me but I don't have much to compare it to. I just know it's WAAAY better than the dialup we used to have! ;)
  5. That's the thing. If you are wanting more 'serious' martial arts, you are going to have to pay for it. At least that is what I have found when my ds thought he wanted to learn karate a while back. It was WAY out of our price range so we moved on to other things. Have you checked into any of the local YMCA's or anything like that?
  6. This is what we currently use as well. In fact I was just searching for 'free' programs since I got a notification that our Kapersky expires in 16 days. But I'm thinking I might should just cough up the money and renew ($39.95, I think) since it seems to be doing the job. I've noticed in the regular 'reports' it sends out, it has detected and elminated several viruses in the last year. So I think it does work pretty well!
  7. I am not using it this year with vol. 1 but am seriously considering it for next year. I like the look of the sample pages but am just not sure about spending that much $$$. Would love feedback on this as well!
  8. We bought it separately, I think at Walmart. It does have ventilation and is made for turning a glass aquarium into a small animal habitat.
  9. It depends on the breed and on the individual hamsters whether or not they can live together. My dd has two female Robo dwarf hamsters together and they are doing great--but they have been together since they were babies. I think that makes a difference. She has them in a 10-gallon aquarium with locking lid (this is a MUST since we have indoor cats!). She had the wire-type cage for her first hamster but he escaped twice. She has also tried two males together in the past but ended up having to separate them due to fighting.
  10. I have done this more times than I care to think about. :tongue_smilie: Including an entire Sonlight core once. Ouch.
  11. Here is our favorite whole wheat bread recipe: 1 c. + 2 T. water 2 T. butter 2 T. honey 3 c. whole wheat flour 3 T. gluten 2 t. dough enhancer (optional, but I think it helps it stay fresh longer) 1 1/2 t. salt 2 T. yeast This can be baked in the bread machine but I usually make it on the dough cycle and bake it myself at 350 for 30-40 minutes or so. It is so good! I use freshly milled hard white flour but I used this recipe with store-bought ww flour before I got a grain mill and it turned out just fine.
  12. This is exactly why I gave up on Core 3 a few years ago. I ended up doing a mix of Truthquest and Sonlight readers/readalouds. We had a good year of American History, but I kind of wish I'd stuck it out and just read the Landmark book like others are suggesting.
  13. :iagree: I have never been able to see the point of lock-ins.
  14. My 4th grade ds turned 10 in November. Cutoff for ps here is 9/1, so that makes him an 'older' 4th grader. I just go by what someone else said--the ps calendar for his grade level, but tailor his curriculum to fit where he is academically.
  15. :iagree: I keep reading about how much 'better' steel cut oats were than rolled so I ordered some online. Blech!! No one would eat them. I ended up throwing them out--and I hate to waste food.
  16. I agree with all of this. I *love* that book and re-read it almost every winter.
  17. Unfortunately, this has been our experience as well. :( I really, really wanted it to work because it is the only math program that didn't cause daily tears at our house. We are using the Key to . . books this year to get my dd caught up and hopefully ready for a Pre-Algebra book next year (8th grade).
  18. I received mine but one of my books (a Klutz books) was cancelled.
  19. Thanks for all your thoughts--I am checking into all your suggestions!
  20. I am not even sure what he is playing now--it is just a small kid-type guitar. He decided to take lessons at the last minute since his sister was doing flute at the same time. To be honest, I didn't think he would stick with it so I wasn't too concerned about getting him a good guitar. But he has really taken off with it. We do have a Guitar Center--that is where he has played the nicer guitars. We'll have to go again and I'll pay more attention to the ones he likes.
