  1. :banghead::banghead::banghead::banghead: Sorry, that is frustrating. I hope you guys dodge it!
  2. This is such a pet peeve of mine! Several years ago my dd had play practice for a Christmas program she was in. I had my ds with me in the audience and was chatting with another mom, while our toddlers rolled around on the floor together. Then she 'happens to mention' that her toddler had been vomiting all morning and was running a 101 fever before they left. :glare: I asked her why they didn't just stay home, and she said because her older son 'had' to be at play practice because the director didn't like it when kids missed. Needless to say, I gathered up my child quickly and we left to 'run an errand.' What is wrong with people??
  3. YES!!! I am determined to school at least through next week, but I feel like I'm fighting a losing battle.
  4. Well, that is disappointing. I know of several families who have participated and enjoyed it in the past. Too bad the changes this year aren't positive. We have never participated since it falls on our coop day, but I always thought it looked like fun and thought about putting ds in someday.
  5. That was my first thought too! We are in the Tulsa area. It woke up dh and me but dd slept right through it.
  6. I drove a 1999 Chevy Venture for YEARS and I loved it--very reliable. We didn't have to do anything to it other than basic maintenance (new brake pads, etc.) We only have 2 dc but regularly have "extra's" along so I know it seats five kids comfortably. ;) Too bad you aren't local, because we are getting ready to list it on Craiglist! I'm driving a Taurus now and I do like it, but I have to admit I sort of miss my Venture!
  7. Yep, this is what we were told too. I think we got our traps at Atwoods--they were pretty inexpensive. You can lay them flat or fold them into a 'tent', which we did to keep the cats out of them.
  8. We have them too. *shudder* I was told the best way to kill them was to put out glue traps for them. We have cats as well and didn't want to use chemicals. We put several around our house and storage room, and we have actually caught several. So maybe they do work!
  9. Oh yes, I forgot about that part. That horrified me too. I thought she was way over the top on that.
  10. I read it and enjoyed it. Although my style is totally different from hers, I could respect some of her choices. I didn't think she came off nearly as harsh in the book as she did in some of the articles I read about her online before reading the book.
  11. I had my dd do the first several lessons of this, after TT PreAlgebra was a fail. I like it well enough that I just purchased the workbook for the first semester! The explanations are very clear and she isn't complaining about it at all. We'll see how it goes when she gets into the concepts that are actually new. :) Thanks to the OP for sharing this!
  12. Disappointing, but I'm not surprised. I won't be renewing either.
  13. :iagree: especially with #2. For us, the most likely reason, though, would be financial. :(
  14. We loved Adventures! It was one of our best homeschool years ever. It's been a few years, but I think it would be pretty easy to swap out the Bible for something else--my dd really enjoyed making the poster for the names of Jesus though! We're looking forward to getting back to MFW this year with RtR!
  15. We have done CHEER coop for several years and really enjoy it. They do offer hands-on science classes but snickelfritz is right, you have to be a member of CHEER for a year first. Maybe something to consider for next year. I've heard great things about Homeschool Choir but we've never done it as it has always conflicted with our coop day. My kids did participate in homeschool band and guitar last year. It is very reasonably priced and they loved it! We are definitely doing it again next year. Not sure about art classes. There are some available but I'm not familiar with any of them. HTH!
  16. Hmm, I don't know if any churches around here who charge for VBS. But then again, we've only attended ours for the past several years and it's always been free. You do have to pay if you want a t-shirt or music CD, though.
  17. I know *exactly* what you mean. Those are the reasons I dumped BJU Math after grade 3 with ds even though it was working for him--I just could not face another year of the cumbersome TM and materials. We switched to CLE because I loved the simplicity of it. I have to say, though, after several months of it we are going back to BJU. I know, call me crazy, but the spiral approach is just. not. working. He is either staring at the workbook with a glazed look in his eyes or in tears. He keeps asking me why he had to quit using his "Matt and Paddy" math (even though that was from 2nd grade). I may regret it, but I am going to only purchase the TM and worktext and TRY to keep it simple this time. I'm following this thread, though, just in case. ;)
  18. I did get to look at the student book, and I had the same reaction as you--not very much explanation. I didn't get to look at the TM, though. Is it pretty thorough in explaining how to teach it? IOW, could I do it even if I don't remember anything from my College Algebra class? ;)
  19. Oh my. I think that was completely inappropriate--not sure I would know what to think either. We enjoy HP here too but understand and respect that others feel differently. I would never question what someone else does with their child and expect that others would do the same for me. Having said that, though, I do tell dd not to bring it up in casual conversation if she can help it. ;)
  20. I thought it looked pretty good too, and the price is much better than Teaching Textbooks! I'm going to convention tomorrow and hopefully will get a better look at it there to see if I can get an idea of whether or not it will work for my dd.
