When do you stop putting your kids to bed?
Sheila in OK replied to Plucky's topic in General Education Discussion Board
We still do this, at ages 13 and 11. We switch off who reads to who, but both dh and I have a readaloud going with each child all the time. We've gone through so many great books this way--Narnia, LOTR, Harry Potter, etc. I know they will outgrow it someday but we will do it as long as they want to. For dd 13, sometimes we end up talking more than reading :) but I still love it! -
Dad teaches daughter a lesson on Facebook.

My thoughts exactly. -
What is the subject of this sentence?
Sheila in OK replied to Elm in NJ's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
I agree it would be exclamation. 'Nero's' would be used as a possessive adjective in that sentence. -
Well, this is what I *think* we're doing. Subject to change, of course. LOL My Father's World AHL for History, Lit, Bible Physical Science (Apologia or something else) TT Algebra 1 Visual Latin w/ Lingua Latina Fallacy Detective and The Thinking Toolbox Band (flute) And whatever our coop is offering that looks good.

If you grind your own wheat
Sheila in OK replied to Truscifi's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I order from a food coop (Country Life) and pay around $.55/lb. I buy it in 25 lb sacks. -
Cornerstone Tutorial Center might offer something like that. Last time I checked, though, it seemed pretty pricey.

I use freshly milled flour in my bread machine (a Zojirushi) reguarly, with no problem. I use it for pizza and cinnamon roll dough as well as for bread. Sometimes I use 1/2 and 1/2 and sometimes all whole wheat, but I don't use red wheat, only hard white. And I do add vital wheat gluten. I have a really good whole wheat bread recipe if you are interested. I think I've shared it here before.

I don't know anything about the Ipod Touch, but my dd and I have a Kindle Fire and Nook Color, respectively. They are *very* similar. The Fire may be a bit faster when surfing the web. I like the way the library and "shelves" are arranged on the NC better than the carousel on the Fire. OTOH, Amazon seems to have better apps and bargain ebooks. The Nook has an SD card space for additional storage; the Fire doesn't, but has extra storage available in the Cloud. HTH a bit!

Same here. When they were BRAND new, like the first few days, I may not have gotten to take that morning shower but after that I just made it happen. We did a lot of exersaucers/bouncy seats in the bathroom (and quick showers!) but I managed. It is just something I need to get energized and feel good for the day.

I finally got a bread machine!
Sheila in OK replied to Mergath's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I usually just use the dough setting, no matter what kind of flour I'm using, and take it out when the cycle ends. I've never had a problem doing this, and I use freshly ground ww flour most of the time. -
I finally got a bread machine!
Sheila in OK replied to Mergath's topic in General Education Discussion Board
Yay! I love my bread machine. I use mine often for bread, pizza dough, cinnamon rolls, etc.. Here is my all-time favorite whole wheat bread recipe (and I've tried several!). I got it from a Leanne Ely cookbook. Whole Wheat bread 1 c. + 2 T. water 2 T. honey 2 t. yeast 1 1/2 t. sea salt 3 c. whole wheat flour 3 T. Gluten It is sooo good! I usually use the dough cycle and bake it myself but you can also bake it in the machine, of course. -
The Kindle is a tablet. After comparing the two (NC and Fire) the main differences to *me* seem to be that there are more apps/books available on Amazon than on Barnes & Noble, and the NC has an SC card and the Fire doesn't. The Fire instead has extra "Cloud" storage which of course you must be online to access.

TT: Is this math program significantly behind?
Sheila in OK replied to OregonNative's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
That's good to know! :) My dd is currently in PreAlgebra and I plan to have her continue with TT throughout high school. -
TT: Is this math program significantly behind?
Sheila in OK replied to OregonNative's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
You may be right. I just remember being frustrated how there were so many problems like that and it never got any harder. But like I said, I like TT overall and am still using it. TT5 taught my dd how to do multi-digit multiplication and long division without the daily tears and head banging we were experiencing with MUS. I just wish they went a little deeper into some of the topics, that's all. -
What were the advantages to doing this? What did you want your NC to do that it couldn't do without being rooted? And did you do it yourself, or buy one of the SD cards with the OS preloaded? I got a Nook Color for Christmas, and my dd got a Kindle Fire. So we have been having fun comparing the two. They are very similar but there seems to be more free books and apps available for the Kindle than for the Nook. So I'm just wondering if it would be worth it to root it so I could download the Kindle app. I have never even owned a smartphone, so I'm not very technically savvy. ;) Any opinions appreciated!

TT: Is this math program significantly behind?
Sheila in OK replied to OregonNative's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
True, the Scope & Sequence may be the same, but the level of difficulty of the problems is much lower than in many other programs. For example, my dd started TT in 5th grade using it on grade level. When the concept of 'percents' was introduced, all of the problems were based on 100. For example, "25 out of 100 monkeys love bananas. What percent of all monkeys love bananas? And obviously the answer is 25%. But the problem is, it never got any harder. Even through grade 6 (as far as I can remember--we don't own those levels any more). So yes, in the S&S, 'percents' are covered. But not to the level that they should be, IMO. Having said all that, I still have my dd in TT. She hates math with a passion and this is the only program I have found that doesn't bring her to tears daily. But you do need to understand that it is behind other programs, and supplement when necessary. I have supplemented with the Key to books in the past, and I know some moms who use Life of Fred. -
When will your Christmas tree come down?
Sheila in OK replied to StaceyinLA's topic in General Education Discussion Board
Ours came down last night. It was drying out quite a bit and dropping needles like crazy so I couldn't stand it any longer! I would've taken it down Christmas night but the kids were horrified at that thought so I gave them one more day. :) -
Kindle Fire/wireless question
Sheila in OK replied to Kirch's topic in General Education Discussion Board
The Nook did come with a USB cable but I can't plug in that and our wireless modem at the same time because the USB ports are right next to each other and they both won't fit. -
Kindle Fire/wireless question
Sheila in OK replied to Kirch's topic in General Education Discussion Board
Would this work with wireless internet? We can't get DSL or cable out where we live so we use a Cricket wireless modem that fits into a USB port. -
Kindle Fire/wireless question
Sheila in OK replied to Kirch's topic in General Education Discussion Board
I just came here to post a similar question. I got a Nook Color for Christmas and am wondering if there is an inexpensive way to set up wifi here. We have a McD's close by too (heading there later today :)) but it would be nice to use it at home as well. -
I LOVE my thrift store.
Sheila in OK replied to Mergath's topic in General Education Discussion Board
Wow! You DO have an awesome thrift store. I have picked up a few finds here and there at ours, but nothing like that. I did once pick up a copy of Primary Language Lessons for .50. :)
