I agree with everything said so far. I am a certified elementary teacher. I quit teaching several years ago to stay home with my kids and have been private tutoring struggling readers for 5 years. Generally, the kids need something other than what they have been getting from school. Lots of hands-on work for the younger children and a systematic phonics approach for all. I pull from several resources for all my clients, including 100EZ, Phonics Pathways, TRL, ETC, and Pathway Readers. I've always done 1 hour sessions, two or three times a week. It is long at first for the youngers, but they build up stamina. I have gotten most of my clients by posting an ad in the lessons section on Craigslist. Repost the ad every day. I charge $40/hour unless they live super close to me. I would charge less if I wasn't experienced and certified.

s/o Pooh and tears: what books reliably make you cry?

My husband and I used to camp on Padre Island. Specifically, Mustang Island State Park, which is near Port Aransas. You can pitch a tent right on the beach. You will have other campers near you and you drive your car right up to the campsite on the beach. There are showers near the entrance to the park by the RV area and port o potties scattered on the beach. The thing about Padre Island is that it is a super long island that spans much of the Texas coastline and I cannot comment about any of the other areas of primitive camping besides Mustand Island. It's Texas, so it is HOT. And it always seemed that gale-force winds would blow us down every single night. I hope that helps. Happy to answer any specific questions.

Simplest Learn to read book/program??
Mama2boys1girl replied to arcara's topic in K-8 Curriculum Board
The Reading Lesson is very uncluttered. It goes very slowly, is super simple to use, and would work well for that age. -
Is BSGFAA Bible Study Guide for All Ages? I would imagine that's the only thing that would fit that acronym but I just want to be sure. 😊 We've just started using it a month ago and really like it. I wanted to try it without having a big financial commitment and DS6 wanted to do the same sheet his brother is doing. So both DS6 and DS8 are doing the Intermediate pages. We only do 1 sheet per week and I read all of it to them. We basically do it together but they each have their own sheet. We are learning a lot.

When I told my kids it was Columbus Day, DS8 said, "Oh man, I'm not wearing green!" What?

Buying colored pencils online

Is there any way to select a different carrier from the online store? USPS, perhaps? -
My DS 8 has been using Singapore US since kindergarten. We will be starting 3A in a few weeks for his 3rd grade year. I would not say that he likes math, nor is he particularly gifted in it. We follow the HIG schedule and lesson, then do the textbook together and he is expected to do the assigned workbook pages independently. He often takes longer than I would like completing the WB. I had intended to supplement with Miquon but cannot bring myself to require more math from him after he seems to dislike math and dawdle through his assignments. My question is: is it enough to only use the HIG, textbook, and workbook?? I notice that many recommend the supplementary books like IP and CWP, but again, I cannot see requiring any additional math work after the WB is completed.

Favorite Early Readers?

The Now I'm Reading series fit the bill, particularly the level 1 and 2 sets. Very repetitive, but phonetic, with picture clues. -
How do you use consumable workbooks?
Mama2boys1girl replied to mamabear2three's topic in General Education Discussion Board
Well, I guess I'm the weird one... I actually cut down one side of a heavy duty page protector and slip it over the workbook page so my kids can use dry erase markers. This method started with the DEL workbooks because, at the time, I thought they were rather expensive for a workbook for a preschooler. I've continued doing it for ETC workbooks because I use these for my tutoring clients as well. I also do this for Miquon. However, I don't do this with Singapore because the child needs to be able to write rather small and I wanted a permanent record of math instruction. :) -
For DS6: Sonlight A Sonlight Science A Singapore math 1A1B & Miquon Explode the Code Lots of 1st/2nd grade readers Pentime Handwriting Artistic Pursuits FLL 1 (possibly)
