  1. Nevermind. Someone helped me out already. Thanks!
  2. I just received a used copy of this book and one of the pages has a hole making part of it unreadable. I was hoping someone could let me know what the missing part says. Please pm me and I'll let you know what part I need. Thanks!!
  3. Maybe this from Simply Charlotte Mason?
  4. How about this? http://simplycharlottemason.com/books/spelling-wisdom/
  5. I did R&S 6 this past year with my son. We started out reading and doing the exercises together. But then I just let him start reading on his own and looking over the questions himself. I would ask him if he understood everything - if he was confused about something we would go over it together. Every now and then I would quiz him with some of the questions. It worked out for us, so I would say give it a shot and see how your son does.
  6.:lol: I feel the same way!!! Every *used* book I have bought so far has been in such great condition! I have it only for about a week or so and the pages start to curl and such. It has been making me wonder what in the world do I do to make books look so used, and what do others do to keep them looking so new. weird.
  7. I'm a little confused....maybe I missed something you wrote. What is wrong with her reading slowly? Did she read fine before and then all of a sudden start reading slowly? Or has she always been slow and careful at reading? And what is really wrong with it anyway? Isn't it better for her to really pay attention to what she is reading and to savor the story than to rush through it and just get it done so that she can get to the next one?
  8. I can't say for sure as we haven't done 1st grade yet, but what I would do is look at the book lists for different programs such as FIAR, sonlight, or ambleside online to see what books they recommend. :001_smile:
  9. Hey there! We just started homeschooling the middle of this past year and we chose R&S for English with my 6th grade son. We had absolutely no trouble at all jumping into for the first time. It explains everything very well and includes lots of review. We use the 6th grade book and it has been fine for him. I have heard others say to use a grade below level though. R&S does include writing assignments, but we don't do all of them. If I remember correctly TWTM states that the writing in this book is enough and there is no need for a separate writing curriculum.
  10. I totally agree that people should not be listing their items at a near new price if the condition if is that bad. I was just talking about items that are close to new looking, even if they have been *used.* For instance, I just received a couple books this week that are immaculate and could have definitely been listed at a higher price. I don't care that they have been used. I don't think people should have to list their items at 1/2 off just because they have been used, even if they are in near perfect condition. KWIM? I really think people should just price their items according to condition. And I see nothing wrong with pricing it to a near new price as long as the condition is good.
  11. Ok, here's what I don't get.... does it really matter what the book looks like? I mean as long as all the pages are there and not torn or written in completely- who cares if some pages are bent/creased/smudged a little or just looks like it has been used by a few kids? The INFORMATION in the book is the same, regardless of the condition. It's not like there is any less info if the book is used. Of course if something is in pretty bad condition, then no, it shouldn't be listed close to retail price. But if there isn't much wrong with it other than the fact it was read by a child/parent, why not?
  12. Please explain - what is this resale policy? I have heard nothing about this before.
  13. Thanks for all the replies so far! You have been very helpful and I would love to hear more! So for those of you who have used this you think I should go with the 4th-6th grade level for my 7th grader? I'm glad that possibility was brought up because I hadn't even thought of that. I will look into that program.
  14. Tell me about your experiences/opinions with Winterpromise. What do you like? Dislike? Do your kids enjoy it? About how much time does it take each day? I see some people complain about reading from several different books at once, does that bother you? Do you use all the books they suggest? I'm thinking of using Quest for the Ancient World with my 7th grade ds next year (so I was looking at the junior high level), but I'd love to hear more thoughts about it. Even if you have used a different theme - talk to me! :)
  15. I was at a convention yesterday and spent the most time looking at teaching textbooks. I had heard of it, but never really knew much about it. It looks awesome!!!! Anyway, my ds is also 11 and in 6th grade this year. We looked at the placement test for math 7 and he breezed right through it so the rep had me look at the placement test for pre-algebra. That definitely seemed a better fit for him and she said it would be perfectly fine for him to do that book next year and skip math 7.
  16. I just saw this in person yesterday at the convention in Richmond, VA and it looks great! I really like the whole idea of how it is laid out. I have been using R&S 6 this year with ds and completely happy with it. But now that I saw AG I'm thinking of switching. :tongue_smilie:
  17. Tell me all about this. I couldn't find a whole lot of info for the B4 program on their website. Am I overlooking it somewhere? I see plenty about FIAR, but not B4. What are the books used and how does the program work? Does everyone like this for a 3 yo?
  18. Thanks for your opinion Susie! That's pretty much what I have been thinking - that SOTW 1 is too young for him. He is very bright and a wonderful reader, so I really think it would be below his level. He has never really done outlining before - and that's where a lot of his struggles came from when we tried the WTM suggestions earlier. And honestly I'm not worried about him doing perfect outlines. I just want him to read interesting books (living books) and then be able to narrate what he read (either orally or written).
  19. My 12 yo ds is the same way. I try to get him to be neat with his writing. Sometimes he is and sometimes he isn't. Let's face it though - some people have awesome handwriting and other's don't (especially males). So I try not to worry about it too much. There are more important things to be working on. If something is especially messy (to the point I have trouble reading it) then I make him do it over. That is often enough to make him try harder to be neat the first time around.
  20. Do you think that SOTW 1 would be ok for a 7th grader? And how exactly would it work if I used that book? Do we just read that one book? Are there other things to go along with it?
  21. We started in R&S 6 this year for my son (I started hs'ing for the first time ever half way through this past year) and he has done perfectly fine with it. I really don't know exactly how much grammar instruction he has had in the past years. I know that he has learned a lot this year using this book and that he had already known some of the stuff in it as well. I think that it really does a good job of explaining things. I think your son's would be ok with 6 since they have had some instruction already.
  22. I have a copy of the WTM (2nd edition) and that's sort of what we started doing this past year. He would read sections of the KF History, do outlines, and then do timeline. BUT, he hated it and I don't blame him. I wasn't fond of it either. I didn't add in any extra books and maybe that is where we went wrong. We were JUST starting out hs'ing for the very first time ever so I really wasn't sure how it all worked yet. I have been reading a lot about CM lately and have been loving her ideas, so I've been leaning more in that direction. But I will read over that section in the WTM again to see what it says. Is the new book a lot different with it's suggestions?
  23. I thought I knew what I wanted to use, but now I'm not so sure. So I was hoping you guys could give me your suggestions of what you use, have used in the past, or are planning to use. My 12 yo ds will be 7th grade next year. I just started hs'ing this year (for half of 6th grade), and he hasn't had any lessons in ancient history through out his school years yet. So that is what I would like to cover for next year and then go in order from there for the rest of his school years. I'm hoping to cover ancient history in one year. I would like to use living books alongside a spine. And I would love some sort of guide to tell us what pages to read and when. I know there are probably a lot of curriculum choices for this, but that is why I'm asking your help. I need to narrow down the choices. So let me know what works and what is interesting. Thanks!
  24. These answers are so cute! Kids are so funny!
