  1. Geometry portion of the program? Can you elaborate? Am I missing something? I thought Math Relief didn't have a geometry program? I know that he interwove much geometry throughout Algebra 2??? Please let me know??? Dee
  2. wow, my son's reading seems so light compared to many, but I'll list it anyway. :) He's a 10th grader. These were of his own choosing, so I guess that's for fun: The Island of Dr. Moreu, The Invisible Man, Star Wars The Force Unleashed 2, and is now reading Treasure Island and The Legends of G'hoole. The next book he's planning is The Count of Monte Cristo. For his school work he's read God's Tribesman (didn't really like the writing style) and is now reading The Hiding Place and is really enjoying it. Hey, this was my dyslexic son who didn't pick up a book for pleasure until the 6th grade and now loves to read unabridged classics! I'm happy with that.
  3. okay, found the email. I'll paste his reply below: If you have not completed Geometry, then try one of the following: http://www.ChalkDust.com (challenging). http://www.MathUSee.com (easier & sufficient to take SAT/ACT tests). "Keys to Geometry" (available through TimberDoodle) -- pamphlet-type booklets. Local Community College (dual enrollment -- high school & college). University of Nebraska High School (largest correspondence school in the world for homeschool students, serving a lot of military and missionary students). If you want subjects beyond geometry, then the preceding suggestions are also available from them. Trigonometry and Pre-Calculus follow algebra and geometry. These can be studied from good materials (including video) that are produced by Larson/Hostetler/Edwards. If you need additional information, please let me know. 4. Lisa, my Algebra 1 is a video set and two of them were eaten up by my very poor VCR. Come to think of it, I better order these up soon before they do go out of business, though he didn't mention that at all. He just said that business was slow going right now and they didn't have the funds to continue making more levels. So I was wise the second time and purchased Algebra 2 on dvd. I was considering saving them for my next son. He's only 10, but the time does fly by and knowing that this program may not be in existence in a few years makes me want to hold on to them... I don't know what to tell you. I've seen Lial's and it looks great as well, and I own Basic College Math for years and I have never parted with that book because of the great explanations. We have loved having a video program. We have been able to watch a lesson over and really get it if we were ever stumped. (this rarely happened, but once or twice when learning something new, we re-did a lesson) I did (actually worked through and with) Algebra 1 with my son. I never took this in highschool and it was amazing learning Algebra for the first time in my life--as an adult. Unfortunately, when it reached the last phase of the quadratic equation, my brain was too fried and burnt out from homeschooling my other children, so he was left to watch the video and learn on his own, and he still thrived and figured it out. At the end of the year, he was given the choice to go with a different publisher and he chose Math Relief Algebra 2 again. When I asked him why, he mentioned the ease in which he was able to understand the teacher. It has given him a love for math and a love for the thrill of figuring out the next math puzzle. HTH, Dee ps the author is amazing with getting back to any and all questions and you can call him as well. His wife is so sweet, too! pps Sure, he actually recommended Chalk Dust Geometry for a studious child who wanted a challenge. He recommended Math U See for a child who needed the basics, but still wanted proofs. He also mentioned that there was very little proof work on either test, the ACT and the SAT. He mentioned a few others, but I can't remember them now. PM me and I'll get back to you because I have it in an email. ;)
  5. Okay, I'm off to research Art of Problem Solving and Jacob's Geometry. Thanks!!! Anyone else? Has anyone used MUS geometry? or any other geometry? I had a daughter use the Key to's, but it is just a general course, not an in-depth course. I think he needs something meaty and possibly challenging. He loves math. Thank you and please keep them coming! Dee ps he finishes his program by the end of this week, so I need to order a geometry program soon.
  6. I'm interested in these Chalkdust Geometry Math U See Geometry Jacob's Geometry Ace Geometry or any other that you have used and has prepared your child well for college maths. Thank you, Dee :) ps my son has already taken Algebra 1 and 2.
  7. We have loved Math Relief. My son will complete (finish) Algebra 2 this week. I just spoke to the author about that and he recommended a few programs that we can continue with, but they are not going to be furthering the program because of lack of funds and sales. Bummer! We love, love, love this program. We have done both Algebra 1 and 2. :) Dee ps per the author's advice, we completed Algebra 1 and 2 before doing any geometry, so now will take a geometry course. Algebra 2 does have some geometry, though.
  8. Okay, they sent me an email with the confirmation and downloading instructions. I haven't downloaded it yet because I think it may take too much space on my computer. Has anyone downloaded it yet?
  9. Thank you, Susan and Jackie. Half an hour is not too bad.
  10. I'm still in research mode and am trying to gauge out the assignments in this? About how long does one lesson take to get through? Thank you!! Dee
  11. I'm in the same boat. My son will be 11 next year as well and I also cannot afford IEW. I'm considering Meaningful Composition, but I'm also thinking of Writing Strands only because he is extremely creative and I wonder if something like IEW/MC will stifle him. So I'll be enjoying all of your replies on this thread. :D Dee
  12. I think I'm close to you, Tina! I'm coming over to pick up my batch. ;) You and me both, but I like to say, "gordita" (just pleasantly chunky! LOL!) Dee ;)
  13. I've been doing a lot of research at this time in order to prepare for my ordering season come income tax time. ;) Well, it sounds like Meaningful Composition or SWI level A or B, would be a great fit for your child. I like WWE a lot, but I'm not so sure how an older child would take to it and if an older child may be ready for a bit more instruction.
  14. I'm looking at both of these for my fifth grader next year. I like different aspects of each. Which did you choose, use, or prefer? All opinions welcome. ;) Thanks, Dee :)
  15. I liked and enjoyed Wordsmith Apprentice with three children. I am also interested in the All Things Fun and Fascinating book just mentioned. There's also Story Starters by Karen Andreola. HTH, Dee :)
  16. We have always tried not to go out much during our school day, or week, unless we are all going after school to run errands. We do take the children to zoos, parks, restaurants, and such, but try to limit that to the weekends. :)
  17. Nope, I make a copy of the list and have my child keep them in his English book for reference. He is allowed to take it out and use it whenever he needs to. My 7th grade teacher did make us memorize them, but that was the first time I had even heard of a preposition. Yup...in the 7th grade...
  18. Wow, thanks for posting. I had wanted to get this program a few years ago, but the price put me off since I just couldn't afford it. I would love to download it, or receive it now and use it for tutoring, or future grandchildren. ;) Blessings, Dee
  19. This has now become a contender for English here. I really like what I see, but I'm sure I will have to test my child in. I would love to hear your reviews and experiences with it. The other two contenders for 5th grade grammar would be BJU and Easy Grammar. Dee :001_smile:
  20. Well, I'm not buying yet, but I am already looking and trying to choose just the right curriculum for my two boys next year. ;)
  21. I have also been considering BJU for the 5th grade and if I do go with it, I'm keeping WWE alongside it since it only takes us about 10-15 minutes to do each day and teaches skills that are completely different from a program that is teaching formulaic type composition skills. Dee :) ps My other option is Easy Grammar, Daily Grams, and something like Meaningful Composition for Writing. (still staying with WWE no matter what we use)
