Blessings! Dee
  2. I cannot say enough about Megawords. My struggling 7th/8th grader is using Sequential Spelling and is doing alright, but Megawords has forced him to really see how word patterns are formed and the whys of those word patterns. The mix of both has done wonders for him, and yes, get yourself two or three because you might go through them faster than expected. Because my son is almost an 8th grader and we are sort of on crunch time, we finished 3 books this year by doing 4 pages a day, but 2 would be just fine and you would still probably get through two books a year with this schedule. To my delight, my son's spelling isn't the only thing that has improved. I was totally oblivious to how little vocabulary my son actually knew, and Megawords provides the vocabulary that was lacking throughout his curriculum. So you get reading improvement, spelling, and vocabulary. My hats to off to the EPS people with this one. We have truly seen and reaped the benefits of using this this year. HTH, Dee in Sunny FL! (definitely start with book 1 no matter what the age/grade level, it builds the foundation for the rest of the books.) (shhh, my spelling, reading and vocabulary have improved grading his Megawords assignments, too! :) )
  3. Winners Bible Study Guide student pages(definitely using this again next year, my son has learned and retained so much) SOTW 1-definitely using next level Tatras -will continue using next year Let's Read, A Linguistic Approach-will probably finish this summer Rod and Staff Math 1 -will go on to next level Megawords-will definitely continue with next levels for non-spelling son:) Just okay Sequential Spelling Abeka science and history (first grade) Living Learning Books This is our ninth year and every year I get better at choosing things that will work for us and actually finishing what we started unless it's sheer torture, but so far, so good. :tongue_smilie: Fun! Dee
  4. this is when I plan to begin them with my son, in the fourth grade. We will be touching on early american history in the 2nd and 3rd grade, then I plan to do SOTW in the 4rth, SOTW 2 in the 5th, 3 in the 6th, and 4 in the 7th, and then return to american history in the 8th and 9th. Then World History in 10th, and Economics and Govt. in the 11th. LOL! Boy, I didn't realized just how planned out I had it until I wrote it all down now. :) My eldest son went through SOTW 1 in the 7th grade and absolutely fell in love with it and is so excited to start the second book. So I'd be a little prejudice with ages and these books. Most textbooks bored him to tears and yet he didn't want to read tons of books on a subject, but SOTW opened up a passion to learn about history and for that I'm so grateful. Sorry this went on so long. HTHS, Dee;)
  5. THe New International Reader's Version is one I'm using with my 7 year old in our bible study, but my older son, 13, uses the New King James Version. We start off with NIRV, then NIV, and graduate to NKJV. God's Story by Karyn Henley is also good. I believe it has been changed to a different title now called Day by Day Kids bible. You can see samples at Amazon. We also enjoyed this one and it is one I still read when I don't understand something or the language of my own bible. :) HTH, Dee in FL!
  6. As always, Great Job!!! Inspiring greatness! Dee(in sunny FL!)
  7. Please share everything that you have done for science in the 2nd grade, what worked, what didn't. thank you... Dee ps I was all set to use Abeka, but just finished reading the WTM and well, it's peaked my curiosity to see what others have done. I'm also interested in doing a few lapbooks from Hands of a Child. If you've done any of those, I'd also like to know what you have enjoyed and what you thought could have waited. :)
  8. I got mine used and resold it with no problem. The person purchasing it has to call the company and they(the company) give them a new installation code. When I got mine that's what I did and when I sold it I told the person they had to do the same thing. You can recoup some of your losses, trust me, and it has amazing resale value at vegsource, so put it up and let them know that it is brand new and that the person buying it will have to call the company for a new installation code. HTH, Dee

  10. Ha! I'd buy it in a heart beat because that would be a subject that would get done. :) If they made a whole unit study curriculum centered on Star Wars, my son would get straight A's. LOL! Dee in FL ps I'll be following this thread, I just have to know:lol:
  11. Bedell Bible Study curriculum. You can see samples at bedellcurriculum.com You can also email the writer, he is very helpful. I just got the first volume and am very impressed. We also use The Bible Study Guide student pages and love these! You can see samples of them at biblestudyguide.com Don't ask me how, but I will be utilizing both next year. The Bible Study Guide allows me to go from old testament stories to new testament and it is very important that the majority of my bible lessons be centered on Jesus right now. The Bedell allows me to take science from every word of God and see it from God's perspective. Both of them have me reading direct from the bible. For me, God has put in my heart that His Word has to be the final and ultimate authority. It is the base from which all other knowledge flows. Everything next year will have to take a back seat to these two things and I will trust God that if I seek first His kingdom, He will add all other things unto me. Blessings, Dee in FL
  12. The Bible Study Guide. All you have to use is the appropriate student pages. They stand alone. You read the actual bible verses from your bible, then you go over each picture and do the appropriate age activity. The student pages do stand alone if you feel the bible reading would be a bit much. I guess it depends on the child. I also love that there is review and application. I can't say enough about this find. check it out at biblestudyguide.com Remember all you need is the student pages and those are 5.95 each set. Each set comes with 25 lessons. I only ordered the first two sets to try it out and it has become a hit. Blessings!!! Dee
  13. http://www.susancanthony.com/Books/sp.html I've always liked the looks of this, but have never tried it. There are great samples on the website. Blessings! Dee:mellow:
  14. I like it because it goes through old testament stories and new testament stories in a year. I like that there is application to what you are learning and I love that the worksheets reinforce the story in a form that the child can retell, and that is, after all, what I'm looking for. I want my child to remember details from the bible story/stories. I love that there is a memory section that reviews everything that was learned up until that moment. And my very favorite part is that you actually read the bible to your child, not some watered down version of the Word. I would love to tell you more, but we just started it. I wish I had seen this before. You can see sample pages at biblestudyguide.com. Right now I am using the worksheets without the teacher's manual. It's good enough for me to want to get the tm, even though many use it without. If you plan on using this throughout their jr. high years, I would also get the tm. HTH, Dee in Sunny FL!
  15. This sounds a lot like Rod and Staff bible. You can check it out at rodandstaffbooks.com HTH, Dee in Sunny FL!:001_smile:
  16. I also hesitated purchasing because of negative replies, but now that I have it in my hand, I am so impressed with it and realize that yes, not only is my son going to learn this way, but I am too! I plan on going through it in half a year then going straight to winston advanced. Dee ps keep in mind that this is only grammar. There is not punctuation or writing, or capitalization. But that is easy to do even on your own.
  17. He is absolutely loving it. It has made him want to do history every day. Before this, he had no desire to read anything about history. This is all he does...just read a chapter and answer some questions from the activity guide, and I think that's enough. I'm not overly concerned because we have language/spelling/grammar issues that we are remediating before highschool. He has already asked for SOTW for the 8th grade and I will add the tests to beef it up for him, but nothing else unless it comes from him. I will not get into serious history study with him until the 9th grade. It works for us, and you have to look at where you are at and what you know you and your child can handle. I have been so surprised the appeal that SOTW has had on my son. HTH some, Dee in FL!
  18. School of Tomorrow science paces had to be my son's favorite subject between the ages of 4-6th grade. He loved them and retained so much. They have appeal because they are like little comic books that your child owns and they really begin to take pride in their work. I can't say enough about this science. I used to take away my son's paces and read them myself. That says a lot. You can order a pace or two from each grade level to find out if it's for you. I would suggest going to the schooloftomorrow.com website and taking the science diagnostic test. You want to make sure that you put them in at their proper reading levels, not grade levels. Trust me on this. Blessings in whatever you choose and on raising those beautiful babies! In Him, Dee:)
  19. You didn't mention the grade, but CBD has several workbooks intended for this purpose and by specific grade levels. One of them is called Daily Skill Builders, and EPS has one called Capitalization and Punctuation: Rules and Writing. I believe that Rainbow Resource has a few as well. This year my son needed extra work in these areas and I found an old Easy Grammar book that we hadn't completed and had him do the punctuation and capitalization pages and I was amazed at how much he picked up. Good Luck and Blessings!!! Dee
  20. I think DM is worth a try. There are a few ladies on the Homeschool Review forum that use it successfully and love it! You can test for placement of this program here http://www.mathplace.com/mpass/download.asp I'd also recommend School of Tomorrow new revised math paces. My son loved these. You might want to have her take the placement test at schooloftomorrow.com and place her exactly where she places on the diagnostic test. I think both of these are great programs and geared to the student and can be almost fun! HTH, Dee in Sunny FL!:D
  21. Ace is not for everybody, that's for sure, but for the most part they have been revamped and are not like the paces of old. Literature and Creative Writing has been added for critical thinking and is usually a mandatory subject in most private schools. We have happily used a subject here or there for years, but I have always been by my children's side reinforcing and going over anything that they didn't understand. In that aspect, I don't find them any different than a regular textbook, except that my child can write in these. I do believe that there is a company, not sure if it's Alpha Omega, that produces a lifepac/pace type curriculum that is secular. Maybe it's worth looking into for someone whose religious beliefs don't align to this curriculum. I'm curious like the other posters as to know what was offensive. Maybe it's something that can be brought to the publisher's attention. Anyway, blessings on whatever you choose and decide to use. There is something out there for everyone. I could never ever ever do something like Sonlight, or Tapestry of Grace, so I totally understand when something just doesn't fit someone and their family.;) Dee in Sunny FL!:)
  22. My 7th grade son has devoured SOTW and really likes it a lot. The only thing I do with this is ask him the questions from the activity guide. He gives me some nice narrations and has learned much that he didn't know. We are planning to use SOTW 2 next year with the tests and omit the activity guide, especially since it is geared more towards 1st through 4rth grade. He loves history for the very first time! And he's remembering so much from it. He is normally more science oriented, so this makes this momma very happy. Dee in Sunny FL! (who has a house full of flu sickies and is taking the whole week off. :)
  23. and my 7th grader and 1rst grader are almost done with all of their curriculum. This is a first for us! My highschooler, well...that's another story! 8 more weeks to go!!! Yahoo! One month off!!!
  24. I started them this year in the 7th grade and my son is about to start the third book, and I think we might get through the fourth this year. It would be great as I would like to go through to the 8th one by the end of 8th grade next year. Of course, I give my son a cash insentive per book, but we do most of the exercises and we even time his readings/word lists for fun. HTH, Dee in FL! ;)
