  1. Many thanks again for all the great information! Much to consider!
  2. I guess I have one more question.... Could she take local CC classes, purse an AA/paralegal certificate, or attend an art program - one of these suggestions.....but not submit it to the college if she has deferred for a gap year? Do you have to disclose what has been done during the deferment? Or even if the college is aware of the gap year plans, and we aren't submitting these classes for college credit, could she still be considered a freshman with the scholarship advantage? I would prefer for her to enter college as a normal 18 year old and a freshman - to have the opportunity to have classes and interact with other freshman vs entering the college as a sophomore with many credits.
  3. Hi Library Momma, Yes, my main issue is her age. I was concerned she may be too young to handle the social pressures at college. She's a strong A student, very organized, and responsible with sweet friends, who are similar to her in temperament and values. She has a shy nature and rarely causes us any trouble, but she tends to be more passive and is very innocent. I'm concerned she may feel very young and a little lost at college from a friendship perspective. She has always been homeschooled although she has participated in some more mainstream activities - job at chick-fil -a , a summer study abroad program through Hillsdale college, and some international travel. This is to say that I haven't purposely sheltered her.😉 However, she hasn't really experienced any peer pressure from a negative standpoint - friends that are drinking, boyfriends, rebellion, etc.. things that she will come across at college possibly. We are concerned she may not be ready to handle that environment and needs a little more self-confidence and maturity first. She also isn't completely decided on a major. I wonder if she selects a smaller, more nurturing type of college she may be fine and find some like-minded peers?? Our main concern about taking a gap year and staying at home is that she may feel a lack of peer friendships since all of her friends are older (normal graduating age) and likely moving away for school. She's the last one at home, so it tends to be more quiet now! Thanks again - I appreciate all of the advice and ideas!
  4. Thanks again for the information! I believe the Impact 360 is for kids that are at least 18 years old, so she's probably too young for this yet. She will be 17 when she graduates. However, it looks like a great program that would be perfect for her. Thanks for the suggestions!
  5. Hello Lori D, Thank you so much for all of the links and information. These are all wonderful ideas! I appreciate the time you took to compose this and share your experience and ideas. 😇
  6. Hello - I'm searching for some guidance and suggestions for my 16 yr old dd. She is on tract to complete all her required hs credits this spring 2024, which would allow her to graduate a year early. She has been homeschooled her entire school career with some years in Classical Conversations and most recently enrolled in a 2 day a week hybrid for the past 2 years. She wants to attend a 4 year university away from home for college next fall. My husband and I are starting to think this is not the best move for her socially. She is mature and responsible although very innocent and somewhat shy/introverted. I'm not convinced being on a college campus with older teens/young adults is the best plan for her. All of her current friends will be moving away for college, which would leave her socially isolated if she were to stay at home and do DE courses at our local university - also not ideal. She enjoys writing, baking, art, and literature/history courses. I'm wondering if a gap year may be a better move for her after graduation? She has been a strong A student and has taken some honors and AP classes through our local accredited hybrid school. She is definitely interested in college and possibly pre-law, although she is really undecided. She is not planning on taking any DE classes this year. Does anyone have suggestions for a gap year that would be enriching and geared for her age (not a post-college gap year program)??? Any other ideas how to best handle this? Thanks for any help!
  7. Hello, Does anyone have experience using the online video streaming services to supplement Algebra 2 (or Algebra 1) texts? We are about to begin Algebra 2, my dd student has done well and mastered most material fairly easily. However, she is reluctant about me being her primary teacher for Algebra 2 and I am also a little hesitant. We think a video supplement may be of benefit. I was evaluating the following 2 options: -Prentice Hall Foersters /math without borders video combo -Memoria Press video streaming - uses Prentice Hall Smith text I'm planning on purchasing the Solutions Manual to whichever we decide to use. Does anyone have experience with either or both of these video services? Any comments on their quality? I'm also unclear why MP uses the SMITH author for the text since it appears to be the same basic text as Foersters. I have also considered Derek Owens.... Thanks!!!!
  8. Thanks everyone for the insight and clarifying the requirements/approaches for me! Very helpful!!
  9. Thanks kand & Klmama! Klmama - where do you obtain the composition assignments to tie in with the literature? Do you create your own? Thanks!
  10. Hello! Some help needed here....my rising 9th grade DD has completed Classical Conversations challenge programs and used LToW. We are not doing CC this coming school year (9th grade) and I'm having a hard time sorting through the pros/cons of various programs for the English credit. She's a strong student, writer, reader, strong grammar skills, and scored the highest score on the National Latin Exam. She is my oldest, so the HS curriculum is a new one for me! I had a senior homeschool mom recommend Skills for Literary Analysis/Stobaugh - however after reading through the teacher's guide, this does not actually help in "how" to write the essay. So we definitely need to add on a solid writing program to accompany it. However, since we have never really done any literary analysis, I'm not sure this is the best choice for us. It seems rather confusing in the exercises and they don't tie into the literary readings exclusively. Can someone break down some pros/cons for me on some other Literary programs? Some to consider: Lightening Literature/Composition 8, Windows to World, Excellence in Literature/Intro to Literature and Skills for Literary Analysis --does anyone have any experience with these? I'm also considering going through the CAP writing/rhetoric or WWS guides to help solidify her writing skills. I wasn't super crazy about LTOW - so I'm not continuing with that. We did do some IEW through CC and WWE in elementary years. The way I understand HS English I, we need to do composition AND literature. I'm assuming I need to get a specific curriculum for both. Do some of these overlap the literature/writing? Do I need separate ones to allow me to have the appropriate credit hours? I also plan on adding a monthly or bi-monthly grammar rules type of review and vocab. work maybe 2-3x per month to add to the HS English I credit. I've read through many of these posts and realize this isn't a new question...I just wanted some specific literary analysis input primarily! MANY THANKS!!
  11. Hello, Does anyone have experience or an opinion of pros/cons to TT Geo 2.0 vs the 3.0 online version? Thanks!
  12. Hello- can someone enlighten me for fall 2018 9th grade biology ? I’m beginning to research our options. Is the Apologia Biology I course one that meets requirements for accreditation of transcripts? I was told by a friend that it doesn’t meet requirements. Could it be used but supplemented with other labs/materials to meet accreditation requirements? Thanks!
  13. Hello, I have a 11yr old dd entering 6th grade. We have always used Singapore successfully, but are ready for a switch. We attempted AoPS pre-algebra. It's not working for us so I'm considering Saxon 8/7 or Right Start G. Is it recommended to do Right Start G if the student hasn't done ANY of the RightStart program? Also is it a better plan to do pre-algebra and follow with Algebra I for consistency before adding Geometry concepts? My dd does well in math and is an accelerated learner but I'm concerned about this path leading to Algebra I in 7th and then the concepts being too difficult. Any suggestions? Thanks!
  14. I'm trying to decide the best path for my 10 & 8 yr old DD's combined history for next year. We have used Sonlight for literature and history while also following SOTW. We are finishing a 2 yr SL American History study and have worked through SOTW III. I'm considering doing a SOTW I path for ancients again next year (follwoing the WTM suggestions) or possibly CORE F SL history? My concern is that the CORE F sounds a little too mature/advanced for the readers for my 10 yr old and mature for the history content for my 8 yr old. My DDs are advanced readers but sensitive to content. I've also considered taking a year break from Sonlight to allow us to advance a little, but I'm not sure what to do in the meantime. I like SOTW but also appreciate the more structured plan/reading selections of SL. I also don't want to advance too quickly, especially for my younger DD. She hasn't had any ancient history yet, so I'm also thinking SOTW I would benefit her next year and be a good 2nd review for my older DD. Any suggestions?? Help! Thanks!
