  1. Maybe this will help: http://www.collegeboard.com/student/testing/sat/testday/id.html
  2. Ooooooohhhhh, yum! My mouth is watering now. I just bought two big bags of frozen fillets at Costco and wasn't quite sure what I'd do with them all. Thanks for sharing, everyone!
  3. Dump the baking soda. I just use vinegar and water for most things, or a weak solution of my Seventh Generation dish detergent and warm water.
  4. What wonderful news! Thank you for letting us know. I'd been thinking about her, actually!
  5. Great idea! I'm Melissa, living in NJ (formerly posting as Melissa in NJ). I've been married to my DH for seven years, and I work from home as a research editor. I'm currently HSing Bella (5), and hope to HS Julie (2) as well. This is our first year HSing (though I've been collecting resources and using guerrilla tactics to convert my DH for over three years now :p). In the beginning of January, we switched from WP Animals and Their Worlds (which was not working for us), to using FIAR as our core, Galloping the Globe to give us a light structure for geography, Right Start Level A for math, and (in theory) WP The World Around Us for science. FIAR is going well, though Bella still thinks it's odd that we read the same book repeatedly. And I simply cannot believe how much she's enjoying the geography work. I recommend GTG to everyone now :D I was sent to these boards by my wanna-be-HSer, in-reality-afterschooler ack25 *waving hi* Even though she's unable to HS in real life, she taught me almost everything I know about it. The boards have saved our HSing relationship several times--I don't know what I'd do without them now!
  6. Quick, get out of the house. Can you leave and go for a brisk walk? Might get the endorphins going and help you kick the craving.
  7. Ha! I'm doing the same thing. My first book was from my YA Fiction category, my second is from my Nonfiction That I Wouldn't Normally Be Interested In. We just started doing this! So far, the 5 y.o. is having more trouble with it than the 2 y.o. But it always seems that I have huge amounts of dishes to wash or toys to put away or work to do. Sheesh. I need to be better organized! Do you think I could feasibly arrange it so I could get them to do 3 or 4 hours of quiet time a day? LOL!
  8. It most likely means that the forum moderators thought the thread was more appropriate for another board here. For example, most of the moved threads I've seen have been those asking questions about how to use the new format, and there's a board here specifically for technical questions and things of that nature. You should still be able to click on the links for the moved threads, but they'll take you away from this (Parents Forums General Board) board and over to another. Make sense?
  9. Also, WHEN are you all finding time to read so much?!!! If I want to read, I have to force my kids to watch TV  Or else I can get through a few pages when I'm laying down with my two-year-old for bedtime, but in general, I find I have almost no reading time :(
  10. Luanne, the books are totally up to you. You pick your own 8 categories and the books you want to read to fill them up. They can be easier or more difficult, whatever you like. I've always been a voracious reader, but for the past few years, I've only really been able to get involved in kids' or young adult books or parenting books. I'm using my challenge list to force myself to broaden my horizons, but you can choose whatever you want. I'm not doing so well, relatively speaking--I've only just finished Ptolemy's Gate by Jonathan Stroud, but I'm hitting the library tomorrow for my next pick. And regardless of whether or not I hope to finish all the books on my list, I'm SO looking forward to getting into some real reading again!
  11. Janet Balaskas, I believe. Excellent book! I also loved Natural Childbirth the Bradley Way--I found it so very empowering. The Ina May books are great too. I had hoped for a homebirth my second time around, but insurance wouldn't cooperate. Instead I had a wonderful natural hospital birth with incredibly supportive nurses and great midwife. But if I ever have another, I think we'll have to make a home waterbirth the way we go. Good luck to you!
  12. This is the recipe I use for honey-baked lentils. I like that it's all done in one dish :p I do the substitution with the 1/3 C rice, and I also cut up sweet potatoes, carrots, and/or butternut squash and throw those in too. It's a nice, sweet, flavorful dish.
  13. LOVED it! Yes, it was so much better than Persuasion. I can't wait to read this book now. What a fun story line! I kept waiting for Isabella's b00bs to pop out of her dress unexpectedly. Interesting use of cleavage to indicate character :p
  14. There's a virus going around that does that. My SIL had a problem with it earlier this year, and we got a bunch of "tagged" e-mails from her. The thing e-mailed her whole office, and she had to apologize to everyone, including her VP. She was terribly embarrassed! I just got another from her the other day--figured it was the same problem. I bet you're still in his address book somewhere and you were just a recipient of the results of the virus. Just ignore it--either way!
  15. Excellent thread, thank you! I'm looking forward to this unit--it fits right in with our FIAR unit on Ping and our study of China for geography.
  16. Your best bet is to cruise on eBay for awhile and see how other people selling similar items are listing them and describing them. I prefer to see more than one picture when I'm buying clothing. Be sure to also check the completed auctions to see how the ones that brought in more money were listed and described. If you're just selling the dresses, I would go with individual auctions, since most people probably don't need more than one flower girl dress. But I would not prominently in each listing that you have other items listed currently as well, and that you're happy to combine shipping. People can click through to see all your auctions at once and decide if they want to buy more than one. Also, depending on the size of the dresses, they may not fit nicely in a padded priority mailer, so you might need to end up buying one of the bigger ones. Fold up the dress as you would to mail it and see how small you can get it without squashing it, then measure and go shopping at a supply store that sells different sizes of mailers and see what might fit. For something like that, that's not easily washable, I'd see if I could get a plastic bag (like a giant Ziploc or something) that I could put it in. The padded mailers offer some protection, but I'm always paranoid about water leakage or something! And as someone who hates smelly clothes (sorry Sue! they make me sneeze terribly), I wouldn't put a dryer sheet or anything in. I don't mind getting flowery-smelling regular clothes, because I just toss them in the wash anyway. But with something that would need special care, I wouldn't want it to be hanging around with the scent on it. Good luck!
  17. Excellent, thank you everyone! These will beef up the category very nicely. How could I forget about CS Lewis? That will be my next pick, if the library has it handy. Kris, thank you for the reminder about Anne Lamott as well. I love her nonfiction (Bird by Bird, Operating Instructions), and have often been curious about her route to faith, but I was never in a place to explore more. Now's the perfect time! In fact, she's speaking at a B&N near here in a few weeks, and I was dying to go. Maybe I'll buy a copy of Traveling Mercies and see if I can get her to sign it! And actually, that last book does sound right up my alley--I'm very interested in faith as a cultural phenomenon (it's just my nature as a researcher ;)), so that's a great reco as well. Thank you! I knew I could rely on you all.
  18. Oh, Dy is right. I do remember DH saying that the lights and radio were wonky before the car died that night. He did manage to get it started again on that trip home (then it died again and was really stuck--fortunately he was near home by that point), but it was after sitting awhile, not after another try or two on the ignition. Ick. I hope you figure it out. My van is nearing the end of its 5-year warranty period and I'm SO not looking to dealing with stuff like this again.
  19. I'm nearing the end of the my first book for the 888 Challenge, and I want to go out of my typical depth for the next one, so I thought I'd ask all you smart, spiritual mamas (and a few dads :D) for some suggestions. I'm pretty sure I believe in a God of some sort, but beyond that, I don't know what I think, and I'm interested in learning more. Can anyone make any suggestions? I'm not necessarily looking to find a religion--I'm mainly looking to expand my horizons--but you never know what might happen! TIA!
  20. When that happened to my DH's (my boyfriend at the time) car, it was the alternator. In the pouring rain. At 11:00 at night. Halfway between Hoboken and upper Manhattan. He still talks about that incident. :(
  21. They refer to your status on the board. It looks like "Just Visiting" is for people who have only posted a few times (e.g., all of us). Any others probably indicate board administrators (e.g., board moderators, employees of PHP, SWB, etc.)
