  1. My son in 5th grade starts at 8am and is done by 3pm. He has a half hour break in the morning for a snack and quick chore, an hour for lunch and outside time, and an hour after lunch in his bed for silent reading time. Fridays are shorter, and he is usually done by lunch, except for the silent reading time. My kindergartener spends about an hour on language arts, math, and memory work. Then she usually has about thirty to forty-five minutes later in the day for history, science, art, and read-alouds, depending on the day.
  2. We'll be using Rosetta Stone. He's doing Spanish for Children this year, for 5th grade. I'm going to save money like crazy to afford Rosetta Stone for future grades.
  3. Thank you for sharing. I am an adoptive mother, doing my best, but always in need of reminders of what my daughter may be feeling or may one day feel.

  5. We went to LfCA after finishing LCI. It just seemed different enough to start at the beginning.
  6. I started offering a second Sunday School hour at my church for those who wanted something more academic and in-depth. I did it primarily for my own children and then figured there would be others who felt the same way. Some now send their children to two hours of Sunday School (9:45 and 11). My son now goes to service with me at 9:45 and then Sunday School with me at 11. I just figure that if you want something done a certain way, you probably should consider doing it yourself. This is my second year of using Veritas Press for Sunday School.
  7. Yes, we used Logic Countdown, Logic Liftoff, and Orbiting with Logic, too. I have been picking up those kinds of books at our used bookstore whenever I see them. Thanks for the suggestions.
  8. How much time does your 5th grader spend on logic? My son is on the last page of Mind Benders B2 and goes through the Mind Benders books quickly. Should we go on to B3 or move on to Critical Thinking Book 1? He has always done critical thinking type books for fun, even in his free time. Is there a reason to put off Critical Thinking by Anita Harnadek until he's older, or is it likely he is ready if he has completed so many of the Mind Bender books. We also do, and will continue to do, Red Herrings.
  9. My daughter knew all her letter sounds, so we skipped past that part of the book. I never noticed a problem from doing that. I was always paranoid about skipping math books, even though they were easy for my son. We just went through them really quickly. We started with Singapore Primary Math, though. I think EB would have been a waste. He had no problem starting with 1A in kindergarten. You know best what your children know and what they can handle.
  10. It is really nice to see others in the same boat!! My daughter will soon be 6, and we've made it to lesson 60. She, too, understands it all and remembers all the rules. She, too, gets bogged down during the sentences by having to sound out most of the words. She doesn't have a problem sounding them out (unless the lesson takes too long), but it can be a fairly long, boring process. Maybe we will cut back to one lesson each week or so and do things she will enjoy more on the other days. Hmm...
  11. I'll be watching your thread. I watched an infant, starting when she was 9-months old, while I homeschooled my son. It went just fine. I held her a lot. She listened in when we read. My son has always been fairly independent, so I really don't remember any problems. Now my son is starting 5th grade and moving up to all things Logic Stage, and my daughter is starting kindergarten. The infant has grown into a sweet 3-year-old. Now she has a new baby sister. I also have a baby nephew. I watch the 3-year-old and both babies a couple days a week and do not yet know if the two days will overlap with all three extra kids or not. This is the second week of watching the two babies (2 months and almost 7 months) and the 3-year-old, and it has worked just fine. We start school on Monday. I have no clue how it is going to go. I'm as uber-organized as possible, and I'm hoping for the best. I figure that, worst-case-scenerio, we can fit kindergarten in after the babies go home. Luckily, my son is still very self-sufficient in the school department. My daughter...
  12. We're going to do Winter Promise Animals and Their Worlds for the core of our school. We're doing OPTR, Bob's Books, and ETC for reading. We use Peterson's Directed Handwriting. Singapore Early Bird and ASCI 1 will be our math.
  13. We've been using Peterson Directed Handwriting, and I really am amazed at the difference it made in my daughter's writing. It truly even helped my husband's writing! I chose it based on the description in the Rainbow Resources catalog, so you may want to check it out.
  14. Does anyone have or know of a list of Newbery Award winners as to where the stories would fit chronologically in the history of the world? I'm assuming most are set in the modern time period, but I know there are some that are set during other historical periods. Thanks, Melani
  15. Quite a few of the cards repeat, but there are some variations. I don't recall the exact number of cards that are repeats, but it is a high percentage.
  16. We used Shurley levels 2, 3, and then 5. We are now taking a break and doing a program that includes diagramming before going on to Shurley 7. I don't think you have to skip if you are enjoying the writing, but I know that skipping is fine. I personally would not take a whole year off from grammar.
  17. I dream of a great secular science program for logic and high school. We're a pastor's family, but that doesn't mean we want all of our science to be creation based. I also agree with the others who would like something great for literary analysis. I'm lagging in that area.
  18. We're in the first chapters of F and have found no need for a TM at any point along the way.
  19. My son did Chemistry II last year and is working through Physics II right now. It is perfect for us. He can do virtually everything on his own, and he is definitely learning a lot. We will be going on to Biology II next year and starting the lower levels with my daughter in the next year or so. I just have no idea what to use with my son once we finish biology.
  20. Wow, you are so organized! I will get out my WP catalog and follow along!
  21. Oh, no. My son will be sad that LFCB doesn't have How the West Was Unus. He's just finishing up LFCA and loves those segments. We will be starting Spanish for Children in August, so thanks for the review.
  22. That's what I have to think about, too. My oldest has the tendency to take over and answer questions for the youngest. I wonder how difficult the daily struggle would be to make sure that she gets her chance to talk and answer questions and explain things in her way. I would hate for her to feel dumb because he obviously knows and remembers so much more about the subject than she does. Even though she is five years younger, at this point at least, she really does feel she should be able to do everything as well as he does. She hates that she has to sound out words when he can just read them. Hmm.
