  1. I'm just curious about this because this is completely new to me. The self-paced courses are stumping me a bit. Sorry if this sounds like a repeat, I just want to fully understand. If my son finishes his Algebra 1 course in Oct and starts Geometry that same month and completes about 2.5 months of Geometry by the time it's Christmas break, which course grade would you put down for his first semester as a 9th grader? What about for the second semester? At that point he may be able to finish the rest of Geometry before the summer time and he would be on track for Algebra 2 in the fall his 10th grade year.
  2. My son is taking Algebra through Derek Owens and won't be done until about Oct or Nov. He wants a month off in July. He then will take the Geometry class. What do you put down on the high school transcript if he's only taken about one month of Geometry by the end of the first semester? Do you write down the Algebra 1 grade instead? He will be a 9th grader in the fall.
  3. That's great. I had emailed her about getting a sample lesson. Does anyone have any link to a sample lesson of her biology class?
  4. No personal experience with the online classes, but they had sent me sample class lessons for me to view. I plan to sign up two of my kids for the Language Arts classes. We've used them over the years and plan to try them online for the first time.
  5. The Fundafundaacademy looks really interesting and the teacher seems to be well-liked. Is this considered an asynchronous class or self-paced?
  6. Would love any feedback! Also, my 9th grader is interested in taking honor's chemistry through clovervalleychemistry as a sophomore. Want to make sure the Potter Bio class would prepare her for this class.
  7. I was interested in an Honors Bio class for my rising 9th grader. Does this class meet live on a weekly basis? The price seems reasonable for one year. Do they grade assignments/tests/quizzes and provide a grade at the end of each semester? Also wanted to hear peoples' opinions about the class any feedback would be great.
  8. Are there options for online English classes in which you can earn .5 credit? We may need something like that for my nephew in the spring. If not, what do you suggest a 17 year old could do to earn .5 credit in English. It would have to be almost completely independent.
  9. I had used Spalding years ago and have been using it with my second grader. I remember I had posted years ago about what the week looks like on a daily basis, but I can't find it. Monday...I present to her 20 words and review the first 10. When I review the words, do I just have her read the first 10 words? Tuesday... I test the first 10 words on a separate piece of paper and then review the second 10 words? Wednesday... I test the second 10 words and review all the words? Thursday... I test all of the words. All the while during the week we are working on writing and reading phonograms. Thank you!
  10. Thats great to know, thank you! Also, there is concern about how to put together a transcript. Would the family take the high school transcript up until he's pulled out and combine it with his senior year grades/transcript? I have no idea, my oldest are in 8th. Haven't crossed that road yet.
  11. I forgot about his fine arts class. He needs a 1/2 credit. He wants a simple class that won't consume too much of his time. Any ideas? He was thinking about photoshop, or at least that is the class he had signed up for at his high school.
  12. He is thinking about the local community college. It's all online though.
  13. I am so excited about this organic chemistry class for him. I definitely have it on the side for my own kids to take in a couple of years!
  14. He is pretty good at math. He should be in Calc BC this year, but he feels there are holes in his learning because of the pandemic. He started in precalculus last year then moved up into Calc AB after Christmas. His counselor recommended for him to continue to move forward into BC, but he declined. I have looked at AoPS for him. It's definitely on the list to show him. I know a bit about AoPS - my daughter is using their prealgebra book. On a side note...I likely will be outsourcing the algebra class for her. She is slated to complete the book by October. I wish AoPs had a self-paced algebra class like they do for prealgebra. I then could sign her up midyear. Is this something they are working on? Only asking because you teach for them!
  15. Oh, thank you! I definitely am forwarding this to him! I quickly scanned, but what is the cost of the class? Are all of the assignments graded by you? How involved is the parent?
  16. Thank you, thank you!!! I have looked at all of your recommendations. I really appreciate it! I seem to have great options for English and History. With regards to science, I found that Royal Fireworks Press has a Genetics course. I *think* it's one semester long. I contacted the company a couple of times and waiting for an answer. It looks like a very interesting course and the instructor seems WELL credentialed! If it's one semester, then maybe he can take something related to the history of medicine or medical terminology. I thought this book seemed interesting, and along with a good medical terminology book/curriculum, he could satisfy another 1/2 credit https://cathyduffyreviews.com/homeschool-reviews-core-curricula/science/topical-areas/biology-and-life-science/medical-investigation-101#
  17. I have a nephew who will be homeschooling this year because his school is going virtual - family just found out. He learns quickly, but needs guidance and accountability. He has taken quite a few AP classes in English, Science, and History. I'm trying to help him find course materials and classes for this school year. He only needs a few classes to graduate, but I think he wants to use this year to maximize his learning. He had indicated that there wasn't much learning from March until the end of the school year and he isn't willing to risk have limited education/learning for this year. He is interested in medical school and is hoping I could help him find course materials or a live class that would progress his learning in medicine. My suggestions to him were medical terminology class or a genetics class. Any ideas are MOST welcome!! I love my nephew and want to help him in any way I can. WRITING now... I think he would prefer a live writing class. I looked at Write at Home and Bravewriter, but both are asynchronous online classes. Royal Fireworks has a couple of options, but they are kind of pricey. MANY classes are already full, which I completely understand. Any ideas about live online writing classes? He can do a research paper type class or even a literature class with composition. He LOVES to read and is wanting to read a ton of good books this year. I might create a separate thread requesting a list of good upper high school level books for him to read. He would APPRECIATE that. Reading 20-30 books in one school year would count toward English credit, correct? Would he have to write a paper for some of the books, or is reading them sufficient? MATH...we are looking at Derek Owens's calculus class. Any other options for calculus? He has a few learning gaps in this subject because of the pandemic, so good instruction and materials would be great! HISTORY...he would love to learn about the ancients this year. He's most interested in Ancient Greece and its history. I would LOVE your ideas about how to approach this. I was looking at SWB's The History of the Ancient World. Would this be too easy for a 12th grader? I actually have the books at home for him to view. I was also looking at the Lukeion Project. I have met the directors at a couple of conferences. They are awesome and their love for teaching their subjects is inspiring to me. I am a little concerned about having too many rigorous options for my nephew. He's never homeschooled before, and I want him to feel it's manageable and that it can his interest. THANK YOU!!!
  18. Thank you for all this information. I have reached out to Derek Owens and someone from his company responded immediately. TCB, thank you. They have a different fee schedule if he decides to not use the grading option. There was quite a bit of helpful information. I already purchased the book and should be here in a couple of days.
  19. Thank you! I definitely will take a look into this. Are there videos associated to each lesson and do you have access to everything and can navigate through the entire program?
  20. My nephew had taken precalculus at his local school this school year, but feels he didn't learn it well. He wants to retake it over the summer to be better prepared for Calc 1 his senior year. I am hopeful you guys can give me some recommendations for any online precalculus classes. I would like to give him some options to look through.
  21. I wanted to provide an update about how we did with this year's literature books. We did so much better this year and it was one of the highlights of MCT. I spent time reading the entire small instructional The Search Trilogy book. This was the biggest help. I should have done this last year. We read all three books aloud and the kids shared in the reading. There were parts of The Search Trilogy book I didn't follow and many parts I did. Michael Clay Thompson had a section about Vocabulary prestudy - I didn't really go over that part with the kids. The Strategies and Activities section was fantastic. He included a section named "A Comment," which is a summary of each book, including Michael's thoughts and analysis. I initally read this to myself, but it was so helpful and deep that I also read it to the children. Another section included quotes from the books, which were Treasure Island, The Call of the Wild, and The Invisible Man. I used all the quotes provided in this Search Trilogy book. It suggested to try to pull our own; I didn't. The ones in the book were fine with me. I might do something more with Level 4 this year. Anyway, the kids loved the quotes and they competed with each other about who remembered the most. There was another section named "Creative Questions and Activites." There were a handful of creative questions. I had them pick one question and answer it in writing. I probably should have had them do more. They enjoyed this part. For instance, one of the questions was "You have a terrible, complicated problem in your life, and you can choose one of the characters in Treasure Island to come and help you. Who would you choose and why?" The last section we worked on was the Academic Writing Practice. Again, I had my children pick one question to answer. I wish I had them pick more, or at least discuss some of the questions we didn't answer. There also was an option to write a paper MLA style. They are not there yet, so we skipped this. I loved this part of Language Arts this year. So much more complete and a great wrap up to the books. Michael Clay Thompson's Comment section about Call of the Wild was chilling and fantastic. Loved it!
  22. Has anyone used any of the language arts books for 9th, 10th, 11th, or 12th grade? Does the student use them independently? We are on our third go around with MCT. We are currently using Level 4 (Literature). I notice that this level is shorter than the others. We plan to use Magic Lens I midyear. Would one level, minus the writing book, be considered 1 credit English? I am trying EIW for the first time in conjunction with MCT. I'm guessing it's 1 credit with EIW and MCT (minus Academic Writing I). Would love any feedback about the high school levels and how it works for you and/or child at home. Thanks!
  23. My daughter is a young sixth grader. She doesn't turn 12 until the end of the summer. I expect if we went ahead with either NEM 1 or AoPS Prealgebra, that it would take her (us) 1.5 to 2 years. I have made some mistakes with my older kids - they are currently in 7th grade-, transitioning them into prealgebra programs that they both disliked. This "held them back" a bit, whereas before they were 1-2 years "ahead". I know it doesn't really matter to be ahead or at level, but my older twins enjoyed being a bit ahead. They see their cousins and friends at certain levels and they wanted the same. I had no problem with it as long as they understood the material. They are math minded kids, but the program I had chosen for them (videotext) was not a good fit. One twin then went into AoPS prealgebra and the other into Doliciani prealgebra. Both are much happier and learning more. I DON'T want to waste time again. I feel I messed up a bit with the others and want to try to pick the right program for her. She too does well in math. I would prefer NEM or AoPS with her. I know with AoPs, it moves predictably and sequentially into their other books, but what about NEM 1? What book comes next if we don't continue with NEM 2? I am looking at Jacobs for her as well. Maybe Jacobs Algebra 1? I see Lori D's breakdown of the chapters and corresponding lessons. Wow, it does seem pretty advanced when it's broken down that way. Would you say it's more advnaced than AoPS or just different because of what each book covers?
  24. This is the copy I have... lookig at the inside cover, it states it was first published in 1991 - new edition 1996 - reprinted from 1997 almost every year until the final date of 2013. https://www.amazon.com/New-Elementary-Mathematics-Syllabus-Level/dp/9812714111
  25. I have a daughter who is completing SM 6B. I am trying to figure out if I should move her to AoPS Pre Algebra or try New Elementary Mathematics Level 1. I have both programs, but I am curious which type of math do you move into after NEM Level 2 in 8th grade? Do you move into Algebra I or 2? Is there enough Geometry in NEM 1 and 2 to count as a full credit of Geometry? I often don't see families using this curriculum. I have it here and am trying to pick between the two. Also, I have an older child using AoPS and is doing well with it. I'm a little concerned with the 6th grader moving on to AoPS because of the amount of reading and problem solving that is required of AoPS.
