  1. Thank you so much for this feedback. I have old beast academy books from years ago and pulled out 3C (I only have 3a-3c), and he loved it. He read through and worked on the problems in 3c and did some practice problems. He went through two sections last night and woke up early to work on another section this morning. I thought I had 3d, but I cannot find it. I will order that with the practice book along with 4a. He seemed to understand the problems well. He worked through them with me at first and understood how to do them and then did them on his own. I really appreciate it.
  2. I would love to hear what everyone has used for their math-minded kids? Struggling with what to use. This is for my youngest, who is 8. We stick with Right Start (K-2) and Singapore through book 6B and then jump everywhere from Derek Owens to AoPS and even Dolciani and Singapore New Elementary mathematics What math curriculum do you use for your mathy kids? My 8 year old loves math and I'm stuck with what to do. He finished Intensive Practice 3B and I'm starting Intensive Practice 4A. We also work though problems in the Challenge Word Problems. We mostly do that and he just involves math in his daily play and activities. He really loves it. I just don't want to burn him out and has worked through IP pretty easily. He surprised me because he finished IP 3B in 2 months. He started with IP 1A and has worked through the books. They seem to be getting easier - and I'm sure because a lot of the application methods are about the same, so he knows what to expect. I don't want to go too fast, and he enjoys it. Do I just continue with IP and CWP?
  3. Are there any other options for AoPS online classes other than text-based?
  4. I'm curious, but are your children taking AoPS classes online? Or is this being done independently by the child or are you sitting with your child? I had a daughter who took two of the AoPS classes online (Alg B and Intermediate Algebra) and she did well, but she was older ... 14 or 15 years old. I did not help her much. She also worked through the prealgebra AoPS book on her own before that. I helped her a little through that, but she was mostly on her own. I have an 8-year old and am trying to figure out what to do. I think he will respond well to AoPS, but I think their online format might be a bit difficult because it is 100% text-based. It's live, but only in live transcript form. And this is helpful too, seeing the order of the classes through AoPS.
  5. The goal is to complete the four years of English credit for high school: English 9, 10, 11, and 12. They had English in grades 9 and 10 and as 11th graders they have the Speech 101 class. They also took a Psychology 101 class over the summer, which I will use as Social Studies credit. I am hoping to use the semester long 3-credit Speech 101 class as one-year of credit for high school English. In our state we need to have four years of English to graduate high school. My kids would prefer to not take an English class next semester and instead take a history class at the community college along with a math class.
  6. Thank you! They in fact are doing a lot of writing in this class, which made me wonder this has got to be an English class. They easily write a 4 page paper weekly. They have articles and videos to review and analyze and are expected to write 4 paragraphs to answer just one question. They typically have 7-10 questions a week. Plus their normal speeches. The chairperson of the department is the teacher and I don't remember speech class having this much writing. How is a college credit class included in the transcript? I would imagine it would be considered AP level but one college class for three credits is really a full year of high school. I'm guessing I would include the speech 101 class for the fall semester but when putting down number of credits I would write 3?
  7. I have a couple of kids taking a speech 101 class at a local community college. Does that fall under the English credit category for high school credit? I'm wondering if I can use their speech 101 class for their English credit as a junior. Would it go under electives or social studies credit, if not English?
  8. Personally, I am not too interested in working ahead in levels - I would prefer to keep at level and provide him harder problems to work on. He definitely enjoys the challenge - he whips out his recycled paper and he has about 20 minutes in him and then he is DONE 🙂
  9. I am loving the IP and so is my son. Sometimes he does only two or three problems and other times he completes a full page. I help him a little bit or not at all, it depends on the type of question. I give him about 20 min to work in the IP book. Honestly, I have one of my teenagers taking an AoPS class online through AoPS online, and it can take her two days to complete one problem and one day to compete 5 or 6 problems. I tell my 7 year old his math is like AoPS like his sister's, so sometimes it will take 20 minutes to finish one problem and that is how long is needed to learn how to do the problem. I now have the CWP book and we just started that. We worked through a couple of pages. He seems ok so far. I have noticed the IP problems are becoming a bit more clear for him as he continues to work through more problems.
  10. Thank you all for these suggestions. I definitely will be getting the CWP. I forgot about that book. It looks different than what I had used a few years ago with my older children, although we barely used it then honestly.
  11. I have a 7 year old who has demonstrated a high interest in math since a young age. He started with Right Start math for K and 1st grade. This year I switched to Singapore Math, a program that I have used for his older siblings. I love the program and it has worked well for my other kids. We go through 6B. Anyway, all my kids have been pretty good in math, but this child enjoys the language of numbers. We started 2A textbook and workbook, but after the first week, I realized that it was too easy for him. He would actually rewrite the math problems to use bigger numbers or grabs manipulatives to stack them in different ways to solve a problem. After the first week, I purchased intensive practice 2A. I have used the IP books in the past for my other kids, but I would get them at 1/2 year behind. If they were in 4A for TB and WB, then I would get the IP 3B book. I decided against this because the IP 1B book looked a little easy and so I purchased the 2A one. He definitely responded to this book. Immediately his eyebrows furrow and he tries to understand what they are asking. I generally leave him alone after I explain which problems he needs to work on. He's pretty independent. He does about 1 page a day. We have done a bit in the textbook just to discuss the concept, but mainly just do 1 page in IP. He hasn't worked on anything in the WB since we started IP. I also read to him almost daily any of the living math books we have. He loves The Multiplying Menace Divides, A Place for Zero, The Doorbell Rang, Sir Cumference and the First Round Table, and Sir Cumference and All the King's Tens. These are his favorite and we read them multiple times in a week. He can't get enough of them. I have others, but these are his favorite. That's all we do in math. IP and these living books and supporting his natural affinity toward numbers like telling me how many minutes until we leave the house or sharing his countdown days until Christmas and then after that it is his birthday.... just everyday interactions like that. My older daughter opened up a couple of the Beast Academy books 3A + and he sat there with her and absorbed those books, but she just read them to him and asked him some questions. Just was curious about anyone's opinions about the books I'm using and if I should be doing something different.
  12. That looks pretty great. Is this worth about .5 credit for High School? Do they go into any detail about stocks and bonds and roth ira's?
  13. Is there an online class of some kind that discusses the differences in retirement funds, stocks, where to purchase stocks, savings accounts, etc... how to budget and how much money at a young age to put in mutual funds vs roth ira vs stocks. My son is very interested in learning all of this and I don't have the knowledge base about apps that provide some of this information with regards to monitoring the money. I appreciate any help or ideas!

  15. So I've already signed up two of my kids for math through CLRC. I'm very excited. I'm curious about the Science - Biology class. Anyone have experience with science classes with the instructor Ryan Jawad? Thank you!
  16. Thank you! I love their classes at CLRC. My son is currently in Am Lit and I want to hold off on British Lit until Jr. year. I would love for him to continue developing his writing skills using MLA format.
  17. Looking for any companies that have asynchronous or live classes for English. Not interested in self-paced. I know there's bluetent and center for lit. This student had done center for lit American Literature, but looking for something else in the fall.
  18. I am thinking about signing up one of my children with George Kreppin through the WTM Academy. This would be for the Algebra II AoPS class. I would love some feedback on this.
  19. Thank you for your response and thoughts! He and his sister have a hard time getting it all done. They are able to complete their other classes because there are due dates and so they reduce their math work to get the other subjects done. Aso, I had done math with them through Singapore 6B and they are comfortable with math and do pretty well. I think they need due dates so they prioritize math again. I noticed that the well trained mind academy has math online. My daughter had done AOPs prealgebra, but DO with honors algebra and geometry. I think the Saxon option might be better and she may not feel behind by not having done AOPS for over 1.5 years.
  20. I have three kids using Derek Owens for Honors Algebra and Geometry. Two of them really struggle with getting math done well everyday. They work on math 4-5 days a week, but they struggle to get the recommended amount done and they are falling behind. It is taking my son to finish his Algebra more than a year! He's been at it for 13 months now. Is there a good math company/program that is strong but is online either asynchronously or live meet times? They need to have accountability.

  22. Wow, that sounds great. I also have read a lot of positive reviews. I am considering having this course before the chemistry course. Right now, they're in biology, and I think the better class sophomore year is physics, and not chemistry. Strangely enough, in our area, the public schools do Bio, Chem, Physics in that order.
  23. I have two kids who will be in the 10th grade next school year. I'm looking into this course for them. It looks great and the responses from the welltrainedmind seem positive. I am curious to learn what are the credentials of the instructor of the class? I can't seem to find a bio on her/him.
