  1. I had a huge long post with tons of quotes and replies that I was working on, and I just lost it. :banghead: I'm on Mydramalist.com, too. I'm AmicusRose over there, so come be my friend. :D I will go back and multiquote everything, and try again. Oh, so frustrating. I think I really had the explosions over my head like they have on the variety shows. I'm fuming over here. LOL
  2. Hello there! I finished a book!! Yay! I read My Name is Memory, and I really enjoyed it. I understand the people complaining about the ending, as it sets up for a sequel, but there isn't one. I did a little research and found that it was supposed to be the first book in a trilogy. The first book didn't do very well, apparently, and the publisher is not pressing the author for the next installment. I wish she'd write it anyway, as I fell in love with the main characters and would like to know how their story ends. Until then, I'll just have to give them the ending that I want them to have. :D I have started reading City of Bones, and it's okay. I don't think it's anything special, but it's a nice, easy read while I wait for my youngest to fall asleep. She's going through an I-can't-fall-asleep-unless-you're-in-the-room-with-me phase at the moment. :glare: Oh, well. It carves me out some reading time. Hope everyone has a wonderful week!
  3. Oh, that's right! I didn't even pay attention to the avatar, and just saw the name. Oops! I've gotten six pages into the book, and I already like it a lot. After skimming the reviews on Goodreads, I think I'm prepared for a not-so-nice ending, but it's gonna suck big time if it really is a crap ending after what seems like such a great start. I hate when that happens.
  4. Hello! We are finally back home from all the travelling, and boy am I sooo glad. I can sleep in my own bed again!! Yay! I picked up my mail today, and guess what I found. Postcards from fellow BAWers! It was so exciting! LOL I hope to get out some return postcards, and send out some to others on the list, very soon. I am actually contemplating picking up a book and reading it. Shocker, I know. I found this book at the Dollar Tree, and the cover and title intrigued me. Will it be enough to pull me from the Kdramas??? Only time will tell! (Oh, dear. I just saw Stacia's review on the book. I may end up running back to the subtitles quick. LOL)
  5. Hi everyone! Just popping in to say hello. I just got back home from a road trip (Wow, two months went by fast!), and will be getting ready to hit the road again for the annual "My-Dad's-side-of-the-family" vacation. This year we're off to Gatlinburg for a cozy stay in a cabin that sleeps, like, 30. 'Cause we need our space, people, if we are to stay a happy family! (My family, my mom and dad, my Grammie, my aunts and uncles, my cousins, and all our kids. So much fun! No, really. I have the best, crazy, goofy family out there. We have a blast when we all get together. :)) I hope everyone's summer is going well, and all are reading lots of great books! I'm still wallowing in the Kdramas, so no books to report, but, jeeze, I've read enough subtitles to count for at least 10 chunky ones! At least! (My family thinks I've gone nuts, and my sweet little old grandmother, on my mom's side, asked if she was going to have some oriental looking great-grandbabies now. Um, no Grandma, I'm happily married to my husband of almost 18 years, who is decidedly not South East Asian (although, he could pass for Western Asian. :D ), and I've finished having the babies. I think I must talk about South Korean dramas too much. Oh, well. Sorry, not sorry!!) Happy reading, everyone!!!!
  6. Captain Crunch turns the inside of your mouth into hamburger. Seriously, how anyone eats that, and then eats anything else the rest of the day, is beyond me. I could live off of Reece's peanut butter cups. LOVE them. Actually, anything peanut butter.
  7. I love Kenneth Branagh, and all the cast in his adaptation. I also like that it was not modern. I enjoyed the other, just not as much. I've hated that version of Midsummer's Night from the get go. It's a nightmare. Ug. *shudders*
  8. Hello everyone! I haven't been doing any book reading for months now, although I have been reading a ton of subtitles. Can tv shows count? LOL I saw this today, and wanted to share: Shakespeare, 450 Years Later I've only seen three of the movies mentioned, and I have to say I'm clearly on Team Branagh for the Much Ado About Nothing adaptation. Stacia, the book on 80s bands looks awesome. I think my dh would like it, too, since he loves the music so much. Thanks for the recommendation! I hope everyone had a blessed Easter!!
  9. Where I come from, "probably" is an entire sentence all on its own. "Are you going to the store?" "Prob buhb bly." LOL I don't pronounce wasp right. I grew up hearing it pronounced "wahst". The first time my dh heared me say it, he had to ask me to spell it so he'd know what I was talking about. :) To this day I cannot bring myself to pronounce it correctly, even though I know the right way. It just sounds so wrong to me! LOL
  10. I got fed up with everything I was reading, so I have chunked it all. Well, except for listening to Inkspell. I'm not giving up on Brendan Fraser reading aloud to me. :D [edited to remove picture] I haven't decided what I want to read next. I really need to "shop" my shelves, as I have tons of books waiting for me to read. [edited to remove picture]
  11. I didn't get anything finished for Italy. Aw well, maybe I'll do better in France. I think I must want to stay in Japan, as I just finished reading my very first Manga novel, Boys Over Flowers Vol. 1, by Yoko Kamio. I watched the Korean tv show based on it on Netflix, and had to check out the book. :) I won't be counting it in my list, as it was pretty short, but if I can find all the rest of the volumes, I might count them all together as one. I read The Fault in Our Stars, by John Green, and it was meh. I knew how it was going to end almost from the beginning. Still listening to Inkspell, and reading through The Shape of Water, If on a Winter's Night a Traveler, and Inferno. The Roundup: 1. The Last Unicorn, by Peter S. Beagle 2. The Winter Ghosts, by Kate Mosse (winter challenge) 3. The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle, by Haruki Murakami (around the world challenge, Japan) 4. 360 Degrees Longitude, by John Higham (5/5/5 challenge, travelogue) 5. Ring, by Koji Suzuki (around the world challenge, Japan) 6. Spiral, by Koji Suzuki (around the world challenge, Japan) 7. The Lunatic, by Anthony C. Winkler (around the world challenge, Jamaica) 8. In A Sunburned Country, by Bill Bryson (5/5/5 challenge, travelogue) 9. The Devotion of Suspect X, by Keigo Higashino (around the world challenge, Japan) 10. Inkheart, by Cornelia Funke 11. The Fault in Our Stars, by John Green 12. The Rowan, Anne McCaffrey (5/5/5 challenge, old sci-fi/fantasy favorites)
  12. I can't believe I forgot about St. Augustine. We love going there. If you like pirates, the Pirate Museum is a lot of fun. http://www.thepiratemuseum.com/ They even have a free curriculum to download. Scroll down towards the bottom for the link if you want to check it out.
  13. Here's a little info about the beaches there: http://keywest.com/beaches.htm#.UwzEuPldWSo Personally, I wouldn't take the kids there, as there doesn't seem to be much to do there but bar hop. My dh and I planned a week stay there for our anniversary one year. We left on the third day. I will say, I got the best bbq I've ever eaten at a little hole-in-the-wall place in a shopping center there. Can't remember the name, though. We took a snorkeling trip out to the coral reef that was fun, but there had been storms out at sea the day before, and the water was kinda murky. Hopefully, someone with more time in the area will have much better info for you. Oh, I think Jacksonville Beach and Cocoa Beach would be nice stops on your way down. Jacks Beach is huge. The Kennedy Space Center is near Cocoa Beach.
  14. Well, poop on a stick Foot! And nonsense syllables I string together. I figure the more ridiculous it sounds, the more it will diffuse my emotions. :) Common ones like darn, dang, crap, shoot, dog gone it, and dad burn are used frequently, too.
  15. We got it from a Redbox kiosk. It's so funny to me to be getting movies from a vending machine, instead of at a rental store. I met my dh at the video rental store I was working at. LOL
  16. Doesn't it, though?! Congrats on the new dog! I see an opportunity for more time for audio books. LOL ~Phoenix, on 17 Feb 2014 - 09:40 AM, said: "I finished The Vow this morning. It is the true story of Kim & Krickett Carpenter who were in a terrible automobile accident shortly after they were married. Krickett sustained terrible brain injury and forgets that she was ever married. It is the story of Kim Carpenter winning back his wife and staying true to his vow to be faithful to his wife. This was one my friend's books that she said I just had to read. Not typically the type of book I pick up; had it been fiction I really wouldn't have been interested. It was, however, non-fiction and it was neat testimony of the couple's faithfulness to each other and their faith in God. (I guess they made the rounds in the newspapers, magazines, and talk show circuit back in the late 90's early 2000's, but it wouldn't have been on my radar at that time. It was also made into a movie starring Rachel McAdams and Channing Tatum in 2012, which I have not seen.)" I watched The Vow on Saturday, and even though I knew how it ends, I was still in tears quite a few times during the movie. I enjoyed it, none the less. It led me to rewatch P.S. I Love You. I love that movie. I have the book in my TBR pile, and I hope I like it. 50 First Dates is a great movie. We actually watched it this past week, too. :D
  17. I finally finished The Devotion of Suspect X, by Keigo Higashino. Oh my goodness, what an ending! I did NOT see that coming. Stacia, my jaw literally dropped when all was revealed. LOL I enjoyed the book a lot, but I do think the ending was rushed. I think it needed one more chapter to wrap everything up a little more neatly. As we were traveling home today, we finished up Inkheart, and started Inkspell. I just love these stories, and enjoy listening to them immensely. The woman who reads the first book does such a wonderful job with each character's voice, and the second one is read by Brendan Fraser :001_wub: . In addition to listening to the audio books, I have started reading The Fault in Our Stars, by John Green. My Italy book I think I mentioned last week is The Shape of Water, by Andrea Camilleri, and I hope to get to it this week. I still haven't gotten to Inferno yet. :leaving: While visiting with my dh this past week, we went to a used bookstore, and I couldn't leave without some treasures. :D I found all the Narnia books on CD. One of the books is read by Kenneth Branagh, and one is read by Patrick Stewart! The other readers are Michael York, Alex Jennings, Lynn Redgrave, Derek Jacobi, and Jeremy Northam. (I'm embarrassed to say that I don't have any idea who these people are. I'll have to Google them.) I found a book I think I'm really going to enjoy called The Archivist, by Martha Cooley. I love the cover, too. The reviews aren't so favorable, but that just usually means I'll like it. :001_cool: [edited to remove picture] Oh, and I picked up a copy of Mansfield Park, too. :D The Roundup: 1. Inkheart, by Cornelia Funke
  18. Yes, we are fine. Thank you! We are on the coast, so while we did quite a bit of snow, it changed over to rain and washed it all away. Dd10 was very disappointed in that. LOL I hope the weather will behave next week, as we will be traveling again to head home. Shukriyya, I don't know if you have tried reading Outlander, by Diana Gabaldon, but it has time travel in it, and Scottish history, which I think I remember you saying you enjoyed. It's the first book in a series that goes from 1945 back to the mid-1700s during the second Jacobite uprising, and takes place in Scotland, France, the Caribbean, the American colonies, and the United States.
  19. I LOVE The Princess Bride. The book, and the movie. :001_wub: :001_wub: :001_wub: I was going to quote from one of the links Robin posted a few days back that had The Princess Bride in its list. In the little blurb about the book, the author of the linked post had called Westley, Wesley. [edited to remove picture] LOL That's a pet peeve of mine. Along with people misquoting the movie.  I got this copy last year, and it is beautiful: [edited to remove picture] My only complaint is that there weren't enough pictures. LOL
  20. First, contact Amazon customer service and see what they say about the charging problem. I have only ever had great customer service from them, so I would expect you to receive it, too. As to the Paperwhite vs. regular... I'm not sure. I have a regular Kindle (the cheapest one), and I love it. I have been thinking about getting my dd10 a Kindle, and have been leaning towards the Paperwhite for the sole purpose of it already having the ability to be read in low/no light situations. I think I would say, if you are getting a new Kindle, I would go with the Paperwhite. My plan is to go by BestBuy and give it a really good look. Really compare it to my Kindle. If there is a BestBuy near you, you could do the same. All the covers I have are by Verso, and they are very sturdy. I toss my Kindle and tablet into bags and such and don't worry about them.
  21. I completely understand about not wanting the movies to take away from the experience of the books. I have seen all of the movies, and just had to keep telling myself that I had to enjoy them in their own right, and try not to compare them too much to the books. There is quite a bit left out, and some things they changed that I couldn't figure out why, but on the whole I like the movies. Do not watch them until you have read the whole series, or at least, don't watch a movie of a book you haven't read. I will say, though, as one Snape lover to the next, I think you need to see the movies just to see Alan Rickman play him. He is sooooo good as Prof. Snape. [edited to remove picture]
  22. Due to an inability to settle down to just one book last week, I started a bunch of stuff, but haven't finished anything. I have been listening to The Rowan, by Anne McCaffrey, a reread of a favorite when I was a teen and part of my 5/5/5 challenge for this year. We are visiting my dh this week, so on the way to him, I started listening to Inkheart, by Cornelia Funke. This is a re-listen, and I am enjoying it just as much this time as last time, if not more. I just love this story. I'm still plugging away at The Devotion of Suspect X. I'm not quite half way through, but I'm enjoying it. I wish I could just sit and finish it, as the suspense of how it is going to resolve is starting to get to me. LOL Once I finish it, I will wave good-bye to Japan for now, and move on to Italy. Italy is the only European country I have been to, and I just loved it while there. I visited my dh at one of his ship's port visits. We stayed in a little village, Monfalcone, and was able to visit Trieste and to take the train to Venice. I want to go back so very much. My first book I was able to find for Italy is The Shape of Water, by Andrea Camilleri. It is a mystery set in Sicily, and I'm really looking forward to it. I also have The Inferno on my Kindle, so I'm hoping to join in on the read-a-long. I haven't started, so I don't know if I will get it all in this month. We'll see!
  23. I loved Snape from book one. I've read all books, and still love him. I hope that isn't a spoiler, but just encouragement. :) I am enjoying this thread so much. I have sooo many thoughts, but using my phone is a deterant to long posting. Plus, I can't use .gifs. LOL Oh, and the Doctor Who post wins the interwebs, AND gets extra points for using the tenth Doctor. *grins*
  24. Passing through your town, Stacia, on the way to visit dh. *waves*
  25. I love A Single Shard. I hope you enjoy it, too. I look forward to hearing your thoughts on it.
